Root Custom ROMs on the Shine Plus are finally here!

Hey, I tried the kitchen but I had some issues with it. It threw an error towards the end, can't remember what it said though.

I'm not so sure I even did it right, I didn't find the instructions very clear. Do you have a link to a thread that has detailed instructions as to what option does what?

The Porting option from the advanced menu is all you need. Every step in there is explained in as user-friendly a manner as possible. What part is not clear? There is also a long FAQ in the thread.

I think it was the placement of the ROM location that was an issue.

Anyways, I just found a news link showing that the Shine Plus is getting Gingerbread early summer. I know, crazy right? Apparently they're skipping over Froyo altogether and going for Gingerbread. But they've been promising an upgrade for a long time now, so I'm not going to hold my breath. Plus LG completely lost two future customers (myself and my wife) forever with their lack of support and response to my inquiries. Anyways, here's the link:

That's completely false. Any phone capable of running 2.1 is capable of running 2.2 or even 2.3 better than 2.1.

And the Shine Plus is confirmed to be getting an official 2.3 upgrade.
 
So I've been running this custom ROM for the past couple months with no issues. Now Telus has put out an update for their software, but my computer is not recognizing the phone to do the update.

I re-installed the "Stock ROM" from the first post hoping that would get it back to normal, but my phone is still not being detected.

My friend has the same phone, un-modded, and I did the update just fine on her phone, so I know that the computer end of things is working.

What do I do?!? Is there any way to get my phone back to 100% factory settings?

What do you mean the computer is not recognizing the phone? Can you be specific as to what you did and what you saw?

The problem may be that your boot.img was still modified with the custom updates.

Click on the last link on the first post (the .7z file). Then copy that file's boot.img to your sdcard and flash it using the flash_image tool (flash_image boot /sdcard/boot.img). You should be able to do the over-the-air update as long as you have the stock system and stock boot.img.

If that doesn't work then the other thing to do is to get your friend to root her phone (no need to flash anything first), and then dump the system.img and boot.img, so that you can make a flashable update.zip with it. There is info on the forum to dump them, but I could get the exact command for you when I get home.

I don't have the Shine Plus anymore so I can't do any hands-on testing.

Basically, I had to put back the stock recovery image (recovery.zip in the first post on the thread) and then do the recovery process.

WARNING!

This removed all my settings so make sure you back up anything important first.

Unsuccessful attempts: restoring the factory boot.img, restoring the stock LG Shine Plus image from first post using alohag recovery. The only thing that worked was restoring LG's recovery image (flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img) and then the voldown-home-power boot. Also, that restored it without any prompting, so make sure you do what you need to first...

So now I suppose you have to choose between the system update, or the customized ROM, at least until someone combines the two... Also, for the record, this is NOT the 2.3 Gingerbread update, it's just a software update for 2.1 ... They say Gingerbread should be released this spring or summer. Of course, they've been saying "any time now" for months, so I'm not holding my breathe...

Oh that's good to know. Looks like you had skipped Step E: Restore to Stock Recovery Image.

If you want to give me a dump of the system.img and boot.img I can easily make a custom ROM. Just do a Nandroid dump of your current system (just post the system.img and boot.img. Your private data is in data.img).

I have same phone as this one C710-v09
I did something stupid
from fastboot started recovery on sd card (didnt flash recovery)
and flashed rom
now i have loop in boot
cant access adb, cant enter fastboot (vol-home-pwr just restart phone)
and because this is a "test phone" no firmware exist.
any chance of sending commands to the phone to enter fastboot?
some program or terminal? any other solution

It builds just fine - and there are source files in there that are obviously related to the alohag, so it does appear to indeed be the right kernel for the Shine Plus. I'll try loading this into my phone later and report back.

The instructions for building Eclair itself seem straightforward enough from their README file. Will attempt this later.

Okay, update (sorry for the delay): I loaded my compiled kernel onto the phone using the tools from the dsixda's kitchen to replace the existing kernel in the stock image with my own. It works just fine with my self-built kernel. yay!

Next, I've been trying to build kernel 2.6.35 msm-branch to load this onto the phone using the default configuration supplied by msm7627-perf_defconfig. At the moment it compiles, and using dsixda's kitchen, I am able to flash this onto the phone. However, with the default config, the phone does not boot - it powers on, give the LG splash, powers off and repeats in a loop.

Now I am attempting to use the 2.6.35 msm-branch as my basis for further work as it appears to have most of the drivers I need (wireless, video, etc.) - I will attempt to adapt the alohag4G-revd-perf_defconfig to this kernel and move the LGE specific drivers. Will post progress... maybe this time more promptly even...

Update #2: I have ported most of LG's drivers and remaining code into the 2.6.35 kernel. Currently it does not compile LG's code due to changes in the kernel API's between 2.6.29 and 2.6.35. I've been slowly fixing one file at a time to make them compile. Who knew I'd need to become a kernel dev to upgrade my phone :D Progress and patches will be posted after I get the sucker compiling.

wow! great to see the progress you're making! my wife has one of these and I'd kill to get more app space on it by enabling ext-based a2sd or something like that.

but mostly, just getting a working kernel build would open up possibilities.

Nice to see someone still working on this, because LG has apparently abandoned support for this phone. It really pisses me off that LG hasn't done the update to Android 2.3 like they promised. See if I ever buy an LG phone again. HTC is looking mighty good to me right now.

Anyone know if it's possible to force an install of Android 2.3.7 onto the phone? Because I've had it with waiting for LG to get off their asses and do it for us like they promised.:mad:

Now I have to find out an easy way to root this thing...

Gingerbreak doesn't work... It stalls after unmounting SD card for me. The solution we might have is use dsxida's kitchen to root the 2.3 ROM (Which I will attempt tonight). What we need though is a nandroid backup of the 2.3.3 image. I'll attempt installing recovery again tonight to see if I can get it going *fingers crossed I don't brick anything*

If you are in successful in extracting 2.3 can you please post it?

My phone is 2.1 but due to an error in the updating process the LG Updater thinks the version is V20A and will not update.

I am hoping that if I can flash the image manually.

Hi,

Just found a rooting technique for our Gingerbread 2.3.3 release, but it's late here... So I don't have time to do a nandroid yet. As soon as I'm able to, I'll post it! If someone has the time to do one, I'd appreciate it... I posted the root technique in the all things root forum.

Just did the stock 2.1 no root recovery. Rebooted from recovery mode. All apps gone, all contacts gone, wall paper gone yet somehow I'm still on 2.3.3 V20a

*Actually I did recovery mode TWICE and its still on 2.3.3 V20a despite going through the initial setup process Home screen/date & time ect

**In connect bot I type - su ...... flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img and get an message saying flash_image: not found where on my computer under Drive L: (Which is my phone) boot, system and META-INF are all Listed under L along with Flash Image at 10Kb.

***Just tried the other method
To install flash_image, type each of these lines followed by Enter (in your terminal app):
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
$mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system

Got as far as the chmod command line where it again came back as flash_image not found but flash image is still in the L: SD directory.
 
Woke up this morning screen was working from my other post. Unplugged from the bedroom and plugged into the living room. Unplugged for maybe 30 seconds and my screen problem reappeared again. Battery pull and repeat same steps as above. Everything is wiped again but I am still on 2.3.3. This is the 4th time I tried that file. Is there anyone that can confirm if "Stock ROM for Android 2.1-update1" is in fact 2.1 and not and the 2.3.3 file isn't isnt accidentely attached to that link or something?
