well iam not saying samsung screwed us, they did. but FROYO has been available for at least 2 weeks, you just ODIN the COMPLETE tar file and off you go. no need to root or do anything else. i understand the complaints, but then again sometimes you have to work with what you have.

if you think you HAVE to root your phone to get FROYO, maybe you really dont fully understand the process.

i dont play games on my phone so whatever some of the issues related dont pertain to me. i say ODIN the FROYO file and get on with your life. its just a phone after all. will i buy another samsung product ? never.

That's a great post, ZB.

Only thing missing is a link to the "complete tar file." ;)

[Odin] [Froyo] SPH-D700-DK28-8g-rel.tar.md5 - xda-developers

It's posted all over the place, actually.

Those interested should read that whole thread, you'll see a foible or two dealt with.

You can use a root method following the Odin procedure if you wish.

Thanks guys. So can you start from post #5 (without doing the other posts in the walkthru) to get FroYo on?

Is there a specific walk through procedure for JUST Froyo and how to utilize odin to get Froyo on?

The link above contains a link for how to do it on the epic 4g. anything specific to the fascinate?

It's posted in a Galaxy S forum there at XDA, which is what attracted me to that link. I'm glad I found that thread, but you're right, I'd rather see something with the Fascinate name on it.. I'll keep looking.

Seriously?

Late September 2010: I go into buy my first smartphone and im REALLY excited. "Oh it doesnt have froyo, but it will come soon..." Ok not the biggest deal in the world, Ill wait, Im pretty patient.

December 2010: It will be out by the end of the year. Ok not the biggest deal in the world, but getting Froyo would be nice.

January 2011: Where is Froyo...where?

February/March 2011: Other Galaxy S phones get the update...still waiting...

Today: Froyo canceled. Big surprise, Samsung didnt come through. Thank you so much for ****ing up my first ever smartphone purchase. I should have gone with the Dinc or Droid X like my gut first intended. Im more than a little livid and the fact that they were dragging us around for this amount of time makes me even more pissed.

Yes I can root, but should I have to?! My phone is inferior to nearly every other phone released in the last year and I have to manually "break" it to get it to work right. I call 150% Grade A Bullshit. Im not doing that. It wouldnt be that big of a deal if 2.1 ran as smoothly as 2.2 or actually allowed me to download ALL apps (There are several 2.2 apps I was looking foward to).

Im sick of this shit. although I must thank Samsung. Thank you Samsung, you have made my next Smartphone purchase INCREDIBLY easier. Now that ive eliminated you as a brand to consider, I can focus on phones and companies that are actually worth my time!

I respect you root folks, but Im no longer supporting a company that does not stand behind its customers. Im sorry for all my language in this post, but Samsung can go **** itself!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

it was actually never a factual statement...just meant to get a rise

Thanks Frisco, I appreciate it. Anything you find would be great. I've looked, trust me... I get lost in this stuff sometimes.

My main goal is to get 2.2. I originally didn't want to root but I'm warming up to the idea. If I can have 2.2 w/o rooting though, I'm all for it!

If you are goin to void your warranty by going to 2. 2 there's no reason not to root fwiw

Seriously?

DUDE! Don't believe that. They're too close to having a stable OTA build to NOT release Froyo. It's happening. Consider this the "official" announcement from SirKronan.

"Official Fascinate Froyo for Verizon is coming."
"Diablo 3 is also coming .... but FASCINATE FROYO will be here!! SOON!"

In all seriousness though. Expect it a month after the other carriers. I've seen enough evidence it's a combo of Samsung and VZ dropping the ball, but Verizon's balls are 100% in Apple's court right now. Everything else - Thunderbolt, Revolution, Bionic, Updates for Android phones - is on the backburner. I mean, they are devoting resources to those issues, but their main focus is "How can we sell more iPhones?"

Look what they did:
1. Announced hard release date ahead of time. What does this mean? Basically it means SCREW every other manufacturer whose customers were on the fence. Now extra people will wait for the iPhone.
2. $200 trade in credits BACK TO NOVEMBER for people that bought other smartphones but really really really pretty please wanted an iPhone.

Have they ever extended such a courtesy to another smartphone manufacturer, let alone BOTH for the same smartphone??

Froyo for Fascinate is NOT cancelled. I don't believe it. But we are all tired of beating dead horses ... COME ON, verizon, just release it already...

A new build was submitted to Verizon. Provided no issues arise, we should see it in a couple weeks. Sorry for the delays :-(

any chance of source dropping pre-OTA like eb13 for the epic 4g?....cuz honestly the lack of source is whats more likely the reason many of the root crowd has gotten so agitated and sworn off the galaxy s 2 when it drops

personally i went from a toss up of whatever htc drop this summer and the sgs2 to pretty much dropping samsung from the equation

source is the lifeblood of the dev/root community....lets face while that community might only account for 5% of the purchases of devices, its amongst the most influential...personally im the go to go for my family/friends for what device to buy and in a given year I pretty much tell 8-10 people what to buy...and atm I'm steering them away from samsung and motorola for everything.

just us getting froyo source so we can have finished aosp and kernels would greatly get me off that negative stance...rightly or wrongly many of take this personally....and canned responses from galaxy s support on twitter dont alleviate anything

if we were so inclined (and you dont mind sharing/finding out) who can we address our concerns to that would actually get us real answers/information that wont give us the "we have forwarded on your request but dont have the answer to that currently" response?

I hear you. Source is a different animal. That is something that I have no viability into. I have no idea how we even manage releasing that.

Some interesting info on Gingerbread for the SGS in Romania... has dates listed.

Samsung Galaxy S to receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread update by March, along with others

More literally what the article says is:

Samsung Mobile Romania
Here are some news about what upgrades will be available in March for your Samsung mobile with Android:

* until 20 March will be available for users to update to 2.2.1 S Galaxy, and Gingerbread (2.3) until the end.
* I5500 Froyo will be upgraded to next week (March 14 to 20).
* I5800 ... will be upgraded to Froyo in late (until March 31).

So when Verizon quits tea bagging Apple we might see the update?

So when Verizon quits tea bagging Apple we might see the update?

Apple has a seriously devoted following, a tremendous media image, solid funding to back it all up, and intense marketing savvy. They put those forces to good use. While Verizon is also large and successful, they have wanted the iPhone for some time. The battle of give and take between Apple and Verizon has taken so many years simply because both are huge, powerful, and successful companies. I'm certain Verizon is having to do some serious catering to Apple, especially since rumors point to a new device coming out soon, and VZ wants to have it a lot sooner than they got the iPhone 4 (six months late).

Verizon's launch of the iPhone 4 was a little screwy, even with all the catering they did to Apple. While Apple is happy to simply sell devices, Verizon had set their sights much higher, and would've likely done much better had the iPhone 4 been released simultaneously. Perhaps Verizon is all consumed to make that happen with the next version. Only then will we truly see a fair competition between AT&T and Verizon as to who the masses prefer their iPhone is on.

People are much more likely to choose their preferred carrier if they can get them their state of the art tech ON TIME.

This release of the iPhone 4 was kinda just to get it out on Verizon. Right now, both of them are kind of milking the customers, selling as many as possible until the iPhone 5/4G comes out.

I don't know, that's just what I think of it. Apple's pretty consecutive with their release dates for their products and that one was just something they wouldn't normally do.

fwiw... i was in the vzw store yesterday getting my phone fixed for a third time.

the girl in the store told me there is an update coming by the end of the month... and it is froyo.

now, i know the people in the store know little.. but she said it as she was reading her magic vzw tablet, as if it was from a note about the fascinate. who knows.

Question, how can I tell if I'm running voodoo? I tried installing the kernel last week and I'm not sure if it worked. Also, can I delete the file "su.2.3.6.1 + busy box" from my sd card or do I need it to remain rooted?

if you heard a robotic voice upon startup you're running voodoo
