AMEN to that. All the GSM versions of the Galaxy S phones have had 2.2 for quite some time now. There seems to be some problem with the CDMA updates. I doubt it is even 100% samsung's problem.
Even the EB01 leak has significant bugs, and I'm glad they didn't release it to the masses. Customer satisfaction would take a MUCH larger hit if they release a buggy software update to the world.
To anyone who says EB01 doesn't have bugs go do some reading at XDA. It seems to work Ok on some phones, and horrible on others. YMMV
I know this is supposed to be a non-root OTA speculation thread, but I can't NOT respond to this post.
I just wanted to say that EB01 runs GREAT on THREE out of the THREE Fascinate phones I have installed it on. My personal Fascinate was the biggest PITA to get it working on. FC galore, lockup and bootloop, weird kernel issues. It took some serious time and work to get it working on my phone, but it's not surprising. I had a custom 2.1 undervolted and overclocked voodoo kernel on it, and I had monkeyed with lots of kernels and other such mods on it, so I wasn't surprised that it was a mess to update to Froyo.
The second Fascinate I put EB01 on was my wife's. It was brand new out of the box with no updates on it yet and no apps installed. Her Fascinate was an absolute piece of cake to root, CWM, EB01 radio update, then EB01 ROM install. Quick and easy. Ridiculously easy.
I can also report that both my Fascinate and my wife's have been faster, more stable, more responsive, and more bug free than any 2.1 based Fascinate ROM/kernal combo I have tested on my Fascinate, or on anyone else's Fascinate. We have had the EB01 froyo on our Fascinates since a couple of days after it hit XDA. I'm not using superclean or a custom ROM, just the leak straight from Verizon. I de-bloated our Fascinates, and customized them myself, and use ADW.Launcher on them. Absolutely amazing and reliable experience. I play on my wife's phone from time to time to make sure it's still responsive and stable. It is. Calls, emails, apps, messaging, internet, etc. It's all rock solid.
And a few hours ago, I setup a friend's Fascinate with the EB01 ROM as well. Her 2.1 Fascinate has been buggy and slow for a couple months now. She was getting tired of it. I was just going to Odin it back to stock for her and tweak it a little bit, but she wanted to give 2.2 a try. It took longer than my wife's Fascinate, likely because of the two OTA updates her phone received that my wife's did not, and because I could never get the easy root method to work. Had to do the adb command method, but I had all that stuff already to go on my laptop anyways. Once I got 2.2 going properly, she LOVED it. It was as responsive and snappy as my Fascinate. We put flash on it, ADW.Launcher, and some other stuff. I showed her the new features in 2.2, which she is totally digging. We reset it a few times and tested some other stuff out, but so far her Fascinate also seems like a new, shiny, wonderful beast.
My point is that I can't WAIT until the OTA hits. People are going to NEED to do clean restores on their devices of course, for best results, but once their 2.2 gets going, most will see a substantial improvement.
Obviously others are having bugs, but I'm 3 for 3 with EB01 so far. I'm using the stock leak from Verizon, and I'm impressed. Very impressed. The one exception is that Abduction doesn't seem to work well on MY Fascinate. Grrrrrr... Everything else works great though, and I read reviews that Abduction is having issues on several handsets as of late. All I can base my judgments on for the 2.2 Fascinate experience is by how the Fascinates that I have direct access to perform, but my observations so far are overwhelmingly more positive than yours.
Those checking back here anxiously awaiting the 2.2 OTA are waiting for a significant improvement in how their Fascinate will perform for them, based on my direct observations of three of these handsets.
Don't forget to do the factory wipe on it though.
I'm still not rooted I'm too scared. I love the phone on 2.1 although I am looking forward to some of the standard enhancements with 2.2. I have to say though besides Blackberry, this is my first Android phone so I didn't have any set expectation I didn't even know about Eclair yet alone Froyo when I bought it.
However, the big complaint I have is my pop3 e-mail. My gmail works perfectly fine but my work e-mail on pop3 has a mind of it's own. What I have read in the threads is this will be fixed with the way Froyo handles pop3. That's the biggie that makes me want to root my phone.
My workaround is I log into the admin panel for my pop3 e-mail and forward it to my g-mail if I know I'm going to be out of the office. This way, I don't miss my e-mail.
Othwise, coming from the BB Storm I love this phone. My BB Storm would freeze up frequently so this was a big step up for the overall reliability of the overall phone but a giant step backwards for the buggy e-mail.
I'm waiting patiently for the OTA update. If I don't have it by the end of March, I'll root it. I'm pretty good at following directions and I understand the community is really helpful.
As far as OTA, I don't even check my phone for updates any more. I'm not checking till 4/1 and then I'm rooting.
For Verizon to be 1 month later than the other carriers is no surprise. I believe they do test things a bit more rigorously that other carriers, or at least they want to appear that way. Can't say that I blame them after Sprint's current antics.
I'm pleased to say email is definitely improved on 2.2, but they STILL haven't fixed the bluetooth issue when something's plugged into the headphone jack. Do any of you have this issue, or is it just me??
