***Official Samsung Fascinate 2.2 Speculation Thread***

I was at a meeting the other day and there were maybe 20+ people with DX's and 3 or 4 with the fascinate. Other than me the fascinates were all stock and they LOVE their phones didn't know that there was a problem. Which Baffles me since I only got the phone with hopes of 2.2. 2.1 was an issue from the start but I only had to wait until years end... LOL What a JOKE!!!

NO more samsungs for me.. And I am ditching this one for a lateral jump to the TB as soon as I can.

I would personally wait for the LG Revolution. You get HDMI out, possibly better battery life, and if reports are true, the most stock Android experience available on current Verizon android phones.

I got an update!
PSYCH:p

I've been laying around all day (hurt my back) and had my phone laying on my chest. It randomly rebooted itself. My first thought was, "Could it be???" Then I checked...still runing 2.1 and double checked...no software updates available.

lol, yeah the other phones are ahead of the game firmware wise. I still think the Fascinate is the best phone out. Maybe better than the T.Bolt, so to speak bc it prolly has a horrible battery life and 4G isn't everywhere. HTC has crappy batteries. I've never seen the LG Revolution but LG doesn't have many Android phones. Prolly more than Samsung lol! I love my phone to death. I've been tempted a few times to go to the X, but it'll be the same as my original Droid, so it won't feel different. Just speed/size. I like TouchWiz and my screen/battery life. Plus everyone has a DX and Inc. - very few Fascinates around where I live, which makes me feel different, especially w/ a white one.

I wish one of you experts just lived next door to me and could root my phone for me and be done w/ it.

Have you tried to root your phone before? I used the http://androidforums.com/fascinate-...-rooting-fascinate-regardless-os-version.html method and it was really simple. I just spent a little time reading the steps and making sure I knew what was going on before actually doing it.

You should give it a try if you haven't already. I'll be more than willing to help out in any way that I can.

Truth. There are quite a few of us here that will be more than happy to get you unstuck if you venture in and find problems. But I never recommend doing something you don't feel is right for you. If you're too leery, we understand. But if you decide to venture in, there are lots of helpful folks on here more than happy to help. Myself included ... well, I don't know how helpful I am, but I am happy! :D

yeah, i always advise people not to undertake something they are leery of...but lately (well the last few months) ive gotten on the kick of *not* understanding how someone could purchase an android phone and not root it (unless work issues prevent it)....

ive come view the single major advantage android phones as having over other platforms is the ability to significantly customize them and their functionality

even my wife can tell the difference now...i wiped her (my old) htc inc back to stock because i wanted to see what the latest inc ota was like theme wise and anything had changed from the regular sense theme (for my own purposes working on an aosp sense theme)...

i didnt get around to putting skyraider 3.5, and adryns old battery kernel back on it before she needed it (and even that rom and kernel is ancient in the inc world) and she was complaining how slow and laggy her phone was all day and how the battery dropped like a rock....i fixed it all up that night and moved her to the latest skyraider athena 1.2 and new kernel and she immediately said it was like having a whole new phone again

i dont really know where i was going with that...but umm yeah...rooted/customized android phones ftw! :D

I'm still worried about taking the train to Rootsville and having an issue with the N00basaurus......and then....derail....

There are a few ways to learn about things like rooting. One is to do what most seem to do, dive in and mess up your phone, then work your way out of it.

Another is to go over tutorials, posted advice and instructions so many times that it gets boring, then take it very slowly and carefully, step-by-step.

Either way teaches. One has frustrations, the other not so much.

with no news or even speculation in the past few days... i think its time to sit down and learn to root this weekend. my question is, when an official update comes out(which we all know it will), is it possible to whipe the root from the phone and install the official update? and if this is possible, would i have to completely whipe the phone of all data?

if you root and run custom roms, you ll never need to take the ota ever again :)

wow, I traded my fascinate in for a droid x several months ago after owning it for two weeks. I'm glad I did now as a lot of the apis I'm using are for 2.2.

I feel for fascinate owners

I never have understood the people who will put down a phone because it doesn't have an OTA 2.2 update. Sure, it's nice to see a company (be it VZW or Samsung) support their product, but when our devs can put out a much more polished product than the company can...why would we want their official OTA update? Just my 2 cents anyway.

You're glad that you have an inferior screen, inferior GPU, and unbreakably-locked kernel?

HEY, you two ....

I have owned BOTH phones. I have done extensive comparing of both phones side by side. When I was down to the wire of my return policy on either phone and had to finally make the decision as to which one, I actually lost sleep over it.

Both phones have so many pros and cons and in my opinion each targets a different type of user. There is too much to list here.

First, I'll defend the DX. Inferior screen? Complete matter of opinion. The DX screen is slightly larger, slightly higher res, and because of the technology employed, text is sharper and crisper. And depending on your usage, the DX can get superior battery life as well. It also is superior as a communication device - triple noise canceling microphones and dual diversity antennas - and that is not just marketing-speak. Having placed many carefully planned test calls in all manner of locations, I verified personally that the claim one review site made that a DX call is much like a good land line call is entirely true. WOW that phone gets phenomenal reception, and both ends of the call sound excellent, depending of course on what is on the other end. The Fascinate doesn't suck. In fact, I've always thought the voice quality is usually quite good. But the Droid X is excellent, and impresses from the first call.

Those that want a more solid-feeling build and a non-slippery rubberized backing will also prefer the Droid X.

And remember, while it does have an inferior GPU to the fascinate, it's still a dedicated GPU that is still better than many competitor phones, and will boost apps and games quite nicely. And one complaint I have about the Fascinate is that it slips out of my hand much more often than I'd like.

Now to defend the Fascinate - Like others have mentioned, the community is so deeply entrenched behind this phone that there is a WEALTH of support. The dev's are releasing crazy-good ROMs based on a very stable 2.2.1 android OS we have right now. And remember that some people need the viewing angles and contrast of the Fascinate depending on the situations in which they use their phone. The DX is just not as readable in broad daylight with direct sun, especially when you're surrounded by snow!! Even in those conditions, my Fascinate is readable and easy to use. And if you need the superior GPU for the frequent gaming, or need Samsung's extensive video format support, or the more ergonomic and slim form factor, or the superior camera, then the Fascinate is a clear choice.

Bashing will not get you ANYWHERE here. Both phones are titans in my opinion, as well as quite excellent and very impressive devices with vast capabilities. But both devices are so different and excel at different things, so a user needs to pick the one that will fit their specific needs the most. End of story. DX users need not feel sorry for Fascinate users, and verse visa. Just get the blitherin' phone you need.

both the dx and fascinate are fines phones and we've been down this road before.

im still going with the "if you support motorola you hate customization and are for the lockdown of android devices" though

if motorola ever abandoned android for wp7...id be a happy camper

I know what you mean!! Motorola is another company making excellent software, but where Samsung fails on the software side for a complete lack of "give a damn" and sincere effort, Motorola fails on the other end of the scale by putting too much effort on the software side. While this benefits non-root users with timely updates and pretty solid bug support, they take it too far with putting that same effort to locking their bootloader. Why did they go with android? Windows Phone 7 would've been a much more logical choice for Moto's mentality than android. They're getting android and treating it like windows phone 7.

Maybe they continue to stick with android since it gives Motorola an actual level of control over their hardware that they wouldn't have with Windows Phone 7. Still, if they want a closed, idiot proof environment, with a very intuitive, attractive, simple, and FAST interface, Windows Phone 7 seems the most logical way to get this.

i just did the all in one SC 2.6 package and I am blown away so far. Installation went smoothly, and after using for about 20 minutes, I am very very pleased. I must admit I was very nervous as I was following the directions
