Help No screen response on cradle?

mntbighker

Well-Known Member
Has anyone else noticed their screen does not respond to touch when on the cradle? I can't get the unlock pattern to work and if I am already unlocked, the screen just fails to react. The second I remove it from the cradle, the screen becomes responsive again. I rebooted but got the same result.

Are you using the power cable that came with the dock? And is it plugged in? I have this problem with my EVO when using a non-stock charger. I think it has something to do with the charger not provoding the proper voltage which is making the screen go all haywire.

Factory charger and cradle.

have you always had this issue? i have the HD dock and no issues.

do you have a keyboard connected? did you install something or remove something around when this happened?

what happens if you unplug the power supply whilst the xoom is still in the dock? any change?

also could be the port on the dock could be damaged?

No keyboard. Could be an installed application? I'll try the unplug at work Monday. It could be a faulty or damaged USB port?

could be. the usb port could be shorting out a pin which could be causing issues..

if you purchased locally, id just take it back/exchange.

Yea that's what I was talking about. My EVO will charge fine but the screen wont work/doesn't read touch input correctly when using a non-stock charger (and sometimes when using the stock charger too). I really think it has something to do with the voltage messing up the responsiveness of the screen. Keep in mind that thr zoom doesn't use the USB port for charging, it uses those two contacts at the bottom. If those are dirty it may charge but still have voltage issues.

As soon as I unplug the charger from the cradle the screen response returns. When the cradle is plugged in the Xoom charges. As soon as I remove the Xoom from the cradle the screen responds again. But on the cradle and plugged in to stock charger that shipped with he cradle I have no screen response. The contacts on the bottom of the Xoom are not parallel by the way, but they look clean.

i still think the issue is physical in nature. its either the port on the dock (best case) or the port(s) on the xoom is/are damaged. whatever is causing the issue occurs when power is made to the dock.

if you plug the xoom DIRECT to the wall charger are you able to have screen response? im ASSuming yes? if you have a usb keyboard that is compatible with the usb port on the xoom, connect it up and verify the usb port works.

go into a verizon store and ask if yo can use a dock to test...

Yep, need a known good cradle to test with, either at VZ or someplace. Yeah, plugged in direct is fine.

Thanks

so you took the dock and AC power supply into the verizon store and it worked when docked and powered?

ok so the only difference here is AC outlets.. :D

did you use a different outlet at your office/location where you tested?

So I was just having the exact same problem as mntbighker. No screen response while in dock. Everything was stock - dock and power supply. I un-dock and the screen works fine. It also works fine with the power supply that came with the Xoom when plugged in.

So I un-plugged the power supply from the dock and plugged it directly into my Xoom (no longer in the dock) and the screen was still un-responsive. Next I unplugged the power supply and moved it to another outlet. Now the Xoom is charging and the screen is responsive (note that the first outlet was a power strip). I tried a second outlet. Still works fine. Finally I went back to the power strip - this time it works in the power strip. I plugged it back into the dock and it still works. Screen responsive. Lock, unlock - everything seems great!???

Then, 20 minutes later the screen is dead again. I cannot unlock it. I'm now plugged back into a mainline outlet and the screen is frozen again. So it seems to be intermittent.

Just tried a second power brick and have the same problem. Power brick is going directly to the wall (no power strip). I'm pretty confident that I've ruled out the power brick now. However, if I unplug the power brick and leave the Xoom in the dock, the screen does become responsive again. And that is very repeatable. I've tried it about a dozen times now.

could be physical issues with the ports on the xoom.

also you cant rule out the dock. could be a combination of both dock and ports.

id return the dock.

Just got a new dock. Plugged in the Xoom and it worked fine for about 5 minutes. Walked away and came back and the screen was un-responsive again. So its not the dock. It must be the Xoom. Man, after all of the configuration I've done on the Xoom, plus getting the screen protector on just right, I really hate to return the Xoom...

So I just got a new Xoom and I put on the Motorola Protective Gel Case for MOTOROLA XOOM Black (Motorola Retail Packaging), put it in the dock and it has the same problem - the screen is unresponsive in the dock (cradle). Now I knew it could not be two bad docks and two bad Xooms. So I took off the Motorola Protective Gel Case and voila, it started working. I find that I still need to have my fingers touching the back of the Xoom case when I touch the screen (I was doing this with the Gel as well), but at least I am able to use the Xoom while in the dock.

Does anyone have a Gel, hard case, or protective case that works with a dock? Do you also find that you have to touch the back of the Xoom chassis when touch the screen in order for the screen to work? Again, I have two docks and two Xooms side-by-side. I've used multiple power outlets, all reading approximately 120 VAC and the power brick is putting out 12.1 VDC, so I'm confident it is not a hardware issue. I'm a little frustrated.

Thanks.

I too have the same exact issue -

At the office - Xoom in dock with power connected does not respond to touch every so often.

At home - Xoom in same dock reponds to touch just fine.

Seems like it is something with power/lighting/em/etc.

Post Script:

I hit this problem recently which is one of the most baffling since it goes against common sense. When my XOOM was connected to the power supply and in its leather case, parts of the screen were unresponsive but when I took it out of the case they became responsive. I tried a different wall socket and the whole screen was responsive whether it was in or out of the case. Finally I noticed that one wall socket was in fact connected to a UPS while the other was connected direct to the mains. Clearly there is some effect due to the ‘quality’ of the power being supplied and the way it interacts with the case or maybe the hands and case (which I would not have believed possible). I think it would take a lot of investigation to nail the exact reason.

I have a xoom wifi and I have been blaming my after market charger, bus yes when charger is pluged in no screen response. I noticed a slight improvement when using a high end stylus.
