Root Sense + Car Home + Car Panel - Car Dock = Everyone's Happy!

VZW Nexus Please!!!
Okay, so you want to use the car panel but you don't want to buy the car dock?

You want to use the AOSP Car Home application cause it's better than HTC's Car Panel?

You don't want to have to use an aftermarket launcher to be able to see this in the app drawer?

Here's the solution:

- Download Google's Car Home apk (this is the AOSP version). Go ahead and install it.
com.google.android.carhome-1.apk
(you can skip this step if you don't want to use the AOSP Car Home app)

- Now you have Car Home and Car Panel installed on your phone but you can't see either of those applications in your app drawer? That's normal...but a real PITA! So here's the fix for that:
[ROM] AOSP-Flavored Nonsense v1 - [3/24] - xda-developers

- Now you should see Car Home in your app drawer (Car Panel will still not be visible...again, this is normal).

- When you open Car Home, you will have two options: Car Panel and Car Home. You can choose each time which one you want to use or you can click the box to set as default and choose your favorite.

I actually installed a beta market app called "Car Home" previously as a replacement (which is not made by Google). Any additional car dock apps that you may have will show up when you open the Google Car Home (example below)

Just an FYI, but if you install LauncherPro, Car Panel appears in your app drawer by default.

I know, I was just pointing it out... as I've seen a lot of other people that I don't think realize that.

Thanks, that rocks. I did not like that I couldn't exit the HTC car dock and see my home screen while docked in the car dock.

Just hit Menu, then Exit. Strangely, hitting home afterward does not return you to the car dock as it did with my Droid X. You can also exit the Car Panel via the drop-down notification area.

Once you exit the Car Panel (while in the dock) there's no icon in the App Drawer to launch the Car Panel again. You'd need to take it out and re-insert it. I can't freakin believe that since the HTC Inspire has the icon in it's app drawer.

You can however use the notification area to return to a previously used app from the Car Panel like Navigation. However the difference is that once you exit the Car Panel and go back to Navigation (for example) hitting home doesn't bring you to the Car Panel home, it brings you to the normal Home Screen. i.e. No way back to the Car Panel without removing/re-inserting to the dock.

After hitting menu then exit, is your home screen in portrait mode or landscape mode? When I exit car home my home screens are in landscape, I like the way the bolt looks in landscape mode, can't wait for the desk top dock.

Little tip for anyone who actually likes the HTC Sense UI (like me). If you tap the search button, then search for "car" it will show up in the search results, meaning you don't have to switch between different UI's or anything like that.

(Tested on a Thunderbolt. Not sure which other devices this works on.)
