[ROM] aospCMod | AOSP 2.3.4 / CM7 (Gingerbread) [05/23/11]

Hello, Running the 3/23 version of this one. It runs great and GPS has improved and I am getting good battery life. One question though. Does anyone know how to keep my homescreen from changing its orientation while I am on the homescreen? I would like to keep the rotating orientation on the apps, but just not on the homescreen. The previous version I was using had this option. I am probably missing something obvious :)

Haha. This problem has been plaguing one of my friends too. :D

He actually ended up Nandroiding back to an older build just to stop it because it was driving him bonkers. I think AOSP should restore the option to disable that feature in a future build. ;)

That is not the AOSP Android 2.3 ROM. The file you mentioned above is a CyanogenMod 7 nightly ROM. They are two different builds. One is an official CyanogenMod 7 ROM and the other is based on CyanogenMod 7, but is moving towards a vanilla experience, like the Google Nexus S gives you.

To install a recovery, you need to be rooted and then go into the Android Market and download ROM Manager. After that, you can flash ClockworkMod Recovery from the first option in ROM Manager.
The phone is rooted. My brother did it a long time ago before he gave it to me. I am somewhat familiar with roms and stuff since I saw him make many of the changes he made for roms and apps. Rom Manager is already loaded, so I just need to move the recovery image to the SD card then use Rom Manager to flash it right? Do you have the link or know the thread for the actual CM7 rom?

It is even easier than that. You do not even need to worry about putting ClockworkMod Recovery onto your microSD card.

Just press the button that flashes ClockworkMod Recovery in the ROM Manager app and that is it. I believe I posted the link to the CyanogenMod 7 ROMs in another thread for you.

What is new in the google apps? What is the difference between this recovery version and the latest clockwork one? Do you just flash it like a rom?

Thanks.

What is new in the google apps? What is the difference between this recovery version and the latest clockwork one? Do you just flash it like a rom?

Thanks.

just switchded to 03/26. did a full wipe/install this time (had been just flashing the new build over the old for a long time, since around feb 5th i think).

the same thing happened last time I did a full/wipe install...

the market would not download anything... tried force stopping the market and clearing cache, and restarting. didn't work.

had to do this again...

which was the solution last time, and it worked again.

(of course these darn cables get such poopy loose connections over time, that you have to hold your mouth just right to get a good data connection to the pc and run a shell. I'm on my third cable from the local sprint store. i don't think i'm rough them, the strain relief design just blows. anyhoo, off the soap box now;))

Hmm, interesting. I wonder if one could do all of that right in the Terminal Emulator app.

You could just sideload Terminal Emulator and perform those commands. I also wonder if you could just change the permissions and owners via a sideloaded Root Explorer or EStrongs File Explorer.

yeah, i almost tried it with the Terminal Emulator, but i was sitting at the laptop at the time and thought i'd just use the big keyboard.
in retrospect, maybe the emulator would've saved me the USB cord battle. i will try next time this occurs.

what's the definition of "sideload"?

In a nutshell, sideloading is when you copy a file to your microSD card, in the case our handsets. It could also just mean copying files between two local devices.

Here is Wikipedia article: Sideloading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .

suuurrre....

show off with your simple google search
and then link the first thing that shows up.
;)

(thank you, sir)

I actually quoted the definition from memory because I honestly did know what it meant in practice. I Googled the Wikipedia article because I thought you might like further reading on the subject. ;)

I figured I might as well go the extra mile since you asked. Haha. :D

well when i googled it and saw how easy it was to find my answer, i had felt the tiny prick of embarrassment at having posted the question in the first place.

I have never side loaded, but I have run the commands on te. :-) Works fine if your eyes are good. ;-)

Yeah, I like using Terminal Emulator for various and sundry commands as well. It is actually a good alternative to many of things that people say require plugging your computer in and using the Android SDK. ;)

It is also a good way to know if you really have root access or not. Just type "su" and if you get a pound sign upon hitting enter, you are rooted. :D

I am still waiting for a reply to the above but...

I just flashed 3/26, the latest Gapps, and the twopointthree theme over at XDA. Biggest difference I've noticed so far is that the rom is using Zeam as the default launcher. I'm using LauncherPro, so I was wondering if I could use TB and uninstall Zeam?

Yes, you can. Go ahead and uninstall it and everything should be fine.

You never have to go with the default launcher that is in a ROM. You can always save some internal memory by deleting a launcher you are not using.

If I somehow deleted both LP and Zeam, will the default launcher just be vanilla android? Just curious.

Technically, yes, I believe so. I have never tried that though.

I would suggest making a Nandroid backup before you attempt that. That way you can get back to normal if things go south after you delete both launchers.

If you delete both, make sure you have ADW around:p:p:eek:

Would it not just go back to the default Android launcher, which I think is aptly just called "Launcher" and look like the Google Nexus S? I guess it is possible that AOSP deleted the default launcher to save space.

Like I said above, I have never tried that before because I prefer a custom launcher of some kind. It is also why I recommended making a Nandroid backup in case of disaster.
