*OFFICIAL* Xoom vs iPad 2 Discussions

The PCworld comparison was at least a little better where he acknowledges that the Xoom and iPad are very good tablets, each having their strengths and weaknesses.

Although I did sense a little disappointment when he declared the winner of the web browsing experience to the Xoom. lol Biased reviewer? Maybe, but he seems to do a good job of hiding it, rather than CNET.

The CNET Prizefight is really ridiculous. I watched it the second time notice more of those biased opinion. If they could come up a category of "the ability to play Flash content", then the result will be 5 to 0.

lol...that prizefight was funny...

Honeycomb is redesigned, bringing something different...and it gets dinged for it. I gotta get a XOOM or any tablet with 3.0 to see how its so different than 2.2 that it makes it harder to use...ya know, according to the prizefight...

I wonder what the score woulda been if iOS was redesigned. Would it get points for being something different or get dinged for being different..like they dinged the XOOM.

I hope Apple does redesign iOS for tablets just to see what the reviews will be like.

There was no way one could say that the iPad has a better web-browsing experience, since 95% of the media content on the web is inaccessible on an iPad, due to it's lack of Flash.

^I read a comment somewhere the other day that since pinch to zoom is better on an iPad....the overall experience is better...and yes they were mentioning web browsing.

:rolleyes:

I guess Flash isnt all that important for web browsing to some ppl. I said we might downplay Flash on phones, but you cannot downplay it on tablets.

Doubt it's 95% as I was using my Xoom pre-Flash and really only ran into two sites that I use regularly that were issues -- my bank and topdocumentaries.com

I wonder who came up w/ the 95% media content is on flash? Out of maybe 50 sites I visit regularly, there are only 2-3 sites that don't work on the iPad.

BBC, youtube, vimeo, facebook videos, abcnews, cnn, cbs, cnet,wired,playboy (and various pornsites), all work on the iPad.

The only ones that didn't were some warez sites that had pirated tv shows inside a flash container.

I do admit flash would be nice to have on the ipad but it isn't that big a deal for most people. Some of the flash I've seen (non-media) like games and individual portfolio sites I've seen don't work w/ touch input. They're coded for mouse roll-overs and you don't do a finger roll-over so many of those sites don't work. There is no such thing as a finger rollover. You simply tap, double tap, or swipe.

Lastly, the Honeycomb's browser implementation isn't fully HTML5 or even up to HTML4 compliant.

95% of MEDIA content...

An app to get the content is not the same as a browser being able to get the content. Everything you listed is an App on the iPad.

Go to youtube.com on your iPad, and try playing the videos. Or, any of the other sites. You'll see the dreaded "lego".

People who say Flash isn't that big of a deal for a tablet are just lying to themselves. Really. I'm running into Flash content constantly. Most sites in fact have their videos done in Flash containers, and that's mostly news sites.

HTML5 isn't even a solid standard yet. It's still a working draft: HTML5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hard to be "100% compliant" with a standard still in draft stages.

Doubt it's 95% as I was using my Xoom pre-Flash and really only ran into two sites that I use regularly that were issues -- my bank and topdocumentaries.com

The inverse is more correct (5%). Flash are the only sites issues and there are simple apps for bank sites, etc for that. Most video sites work with Skyfire.

iPad for most is a better experience, since they do not care about sd cards, drag and drop or anything else that Android has over iOS.

Android tablets are NOT going to beat iPad anytime soon, so Xoom and other products would be better served fighting to be the main second player.

iPad works and "feels" great without any tweaks and has a fantastic app ecosystem. Consumers get that and are mainly choosing it for those reasons.

I luv my gTablet, but if iPad were to somehow get actual Flash fucntion, it would destroy Android except for lower cost tablets. For me iPad is too restrictive, but most do not care.

Added:

In regards to features, most here apparently do not even care about USB host, which to me is an absolute requirement. Save for overpriced data options (which I tether using my Inc), the Xoom is actually more restrictive than the gTablet for me. Wish the G had the Xooms much nicer display though :(

Wrong. Wrong. If the youtube video is embedded like on this site, it will play within the browser. Most sites now do browser detection and serve mp4/m4v files to IOS device. They do this due to the sheer ubiquity and numbers of iOS devices.

The blue lego may be the case 3 years ago but since last year, embedded videos play fine on those sites I've mention. The App versions are just another benefit.

There is no app for vimeo yet it plays 1080p/720p video just fine. Again same for facebook.
There is no official facebook app for the iPad. Yet, it plays just fine via Safari.
Same for porn sites .

As you know, there is no "playboy" app for iPad either due to Steve Job's censorship of porn.
Yet, playboy, hustler play just fine.

And trust me, you would prefer the iOS "enhanced" versions of those websites even on Android devices.
The mp4 video versions (vs the Flash ONP6 embedded container versions) always play better even on Android devices.

I don't think I believe that either. Please provide a link or stats to back it up. I'm definitely a supporter of Flash and Xoom, but I just don't believe this one.

The largest media delivery sites on the internet are:

* Youtube
* Hulu
* Rueters
* Yahoo!

All 4 of the largest content delivery sites use Flash.

Would you say that's about 95%? If you like, I'll slice and dice the numbers for you, or you can go see their rankings yourself. Sure, Hulu is about to get bumped by Netflix, but guess what? That's Silverlight, not HTML5.

* Rueters
* Yahoo!

They also serve iOS optimized mp4 versions. No apps
See screenshot.

Youtube can be accessed outside of the app and in the browser.
Yahoo, just go to http://www.yahoo.com/tablet (which is autodetected by their servers) and you get videos.

Hulu, I give you but HULU is not 95%of the media content on the internet.

At least there is a Netflix for IOS.

Maybe. No site I design does that. Serves up Flash, or directs the user to go get the plugin. I've not really seen very many sites (I've designed and manage) have large hits from iOS devices. Mostly PC's... The occasional Mac.

Possible. Last I heavily used one (an iPad) was about a year ago. I saw the lego on way too many sites, therefore decided against purchasing.

Again, might have changed a bit in the last year.

Yes there is:
Playboy for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

Yet, playboy, hustler play just fine.

Well, I'll leave that with you. Didn't have the chance to check those out when I played with an iPad last :)

And trust me, you would prefer the iOS "enhanced" versions of those websites even on Android devices.

Actually, no. I prefer sites delivered in a standards-compliant manner, so I can tell my browser how to handle it.

The mp4 video versions (vs the Flash ONP6 embedded container versions) always play better even on Android devices.

I dunno. I've had good luck with both, and never noticed any degradation. I would assume mp4 would be better, since there is native codec support.

No I don't. Youtube works just fine on my xoom both before and after Flash. Hulu does not.

Still just listing four sites has nothing to do with 95%. Either back up your statement or retract it.

I hate it when Apple fanbois make up numbers and maybe even moreso when those on the other side do.

Yep and if a lot more of the "jiggly" sites start playing content in browser with the iPad, WATCH OUT! :eek: Just like p*rn pushed the business for VHS, DVD and created the drive for broadband (you know it did), the iPad would sell even more than it is now ;) :(

iPad would be unstoppable!!!!!!! :mad: ;)

I dont give a crap about flash. I am in the camp that it should die. Its a nice to have and the choice is great.

What makes the Xoom browser better for me than the iPad? Bookmark Syncronization, Native Chrome to Phone, and TABS TABS TABS!

Tabs are GRREAT

There is an app for Hulu+ as well. $8 a month, but handy none the less for if you want to use it. Doe not work at all on my Gtablet unless I use Playon, which seems excessive to me (leaving a computer on just to stream video every now and then).

Hulu and Netflix are coming to Android, but the chipset must have the needed DRM keys for it to work. Does the Tegra 2 have them?

To each their own :)

I like Flash as an option and notice an improvement now, even on my Incredible for Flash performance. gTablet has always done well, so not seeing a difference there.

I'm in wedding industry that almost 90% of wedding vendor web sites are entirely embeded in Flash wrapper. Same like restaurants web site, they are almost all in Flash.

Some day HTML5 will be dominant. Some day! But for now, Flash is here.

This. I go to restaurant websites CONSTANTLY before trying a new place, and they are all in Flash. All of them.

As someone who has been using Android devices for the past year, I was very excited about the Xoom and picked one up on day one. I also picked up an iPad 2 on day one which is by first ever iOS device.

XOOM Thoughts: The first two or three days I had the XOOM I was very unimpressed. Sure the operating system looks cool, but in real world usage, it was worthless to me. As an engineering student, tech journalist, and YouTube Partner, the Motorola XOOM wasn't of much use. It has NO applications. In the month it's been out it's only gained like 35 apps. I don't know what you guys use tablets for, but I use them to be more productive in work and school, not to just browse the web and tinker with.

Android Honeycomb has potential but it's super buggy and laggy. There have been instances where my XOOM was on standby mode and it simply wouldn't wake up! I thought the damn thing was broken, then it decided to wake up 5 minutes later. I've seen my fair share of random reboots, widgets crashing, lagginess when going from screen to screen, and the home screen appearing blank when i return from an application. It's really annoying. Web browsing is good, but as someone who browses over 20 different sites daily, flash isn't as important as die hard android fanboys make it out to be. Sure it's useful here and there, but saying the iPad cant view 95% of the web is pure ignorance and only shows you have never owned one.

Hardware wise the XOOM is not a slouch. It is a tad heavy for me to hold in one hand, especially while in bed reading books. Holding it in portrait mode is extremely awkward because of the unnatural dimensions and the branding on the side of the screen. The display is also not as good as the iPad 2's. IPS has superior viewing angles, color saturation, and sharpness. Sure, you wouldn't notice if all you had was the XOOM, but as a tech reviewer I found the screen to be disappointing in certain areas almost immediately. It's also impossible to read in direct sunlight.

iPad 2 Thoughts: It is my first iOS device so these impressions are from a long time android user. I always had the preconceived notion that iOS was so "boring and stale" when compared to android. Like many others, I said this without ever owning an iOS device, which is ignorant. If you find it truly boring, you must have ADD. iOS has SOOOO many more quality applications and games than android its not even funny. The same apps I've used on android are almost always much higher quality on iOS. Furthermore, iOS has some of the best games I've seen. Infinity blade, Real Racing 2 HD, Dead Space, Final Fantasy 1-3, World of Goo, the list just goes on. It feels like a gaming console. I didn't know this until getting an iPad, but every game android gets has been on iOS for several months in the past, it's ridiculous.

Sure iOS doesn't have widgets and its only screens filled with icons. But what do you get in return? Netflix, Hulu, TONS of amazing games, TONS of quality applications, and an overall more stable product. It's much thinner than the XOOM, and it makes a difference for someone who reads a lot of eBooks. The iPad actually has the same dimensions as a book so it's more natural to hold. Build quality on both devices is really good, but I give the iPad 2 the slight edge. It's thinner, and the back doesn't attract dirt, fingerprints, and scratches as much as the XOOM does.

Sure, you may not have flash or tabbed browsing natively, but those features really don't make a big difference. You can have different windows open on iOS and by clicking a button right by the search bar you can quickly jump between different windows. Furthermore, when I had the XOOM I was surprised to see that not many sites I visit even use flash. I expected browsing to be totally crippled, but it isn't. Additionally, many sites are optimized for viewing on iOS devices. If you go to gametrailers.com you can actually view all of the content as it has a special plugin for iOS devices, MANY sites do this now. Many people here will try to deny this, but those are the people who don't have both devices in front of them and are fanboys.

The iPad 2 is actually useful for me in class unlike the XOOM. I have a ton of applications for astronomy, calculus, chemistry etc. Whereas my XOOM has nothing. I brought it to class a few times and I felt stupid because it had no apps.

Whether you value widgets and customization over quality applications and games is up to you. But at least me personally, i wouldn't want to spend upwards of $500 on a tablet just to browse the web and tinker with. No ones going to compliment you on how cool your theme is, but I am sure as hell they will be surprised when you show them the Elements Period Table or Infinity Blade on iOS.
