*OFFICIAL* Xoom vs iPad 2 Discussions

Btw, I never understood why you'd have a topic like this. This is Android, screw the pad. It should always be about Android, hence the Xoom, here. It makes no sense.

Amazing that 2 people can have such differing views on the same device. This happens with women as well. My X's boyfriend loves the user experience, I didn't.

No ones going to compliment you on how cool your theme is, but I am sure as hell they will be surprised when you show them the Elements Period Table or Infinity Blade on iOS.

I don't think Xoom users are looking for compliments, this line clearly states that iDevice user have a lot of peer pressure to own the iNthing!

Its just come to preference and choice. Apple censors apps heavily so they can target parents/child, students and church folks. I don't want to live in a world of what i can have or not determined by Steve.

I just dont know being a youtube partner can be of any kind of credential :-)

<Sigh> a fanboi blossoms... So what EXACTLY are the apps that are so wonderful and useful to you? ( a periodic table?) Lot of words above, but very few specifics. You think Google Earth and Google sky are slouches for astronomy and geography?

WebElements Periodic Table of the Elements
Chemical Elements.com - An Interactive Periodic Table of the Elements
(and probably a thousand like it...oh, but wait, I'll bet some of them use Flash)

Exoplanet, molecules, elementals, mars globe, emt pde, star walk, sky safari, ihomework, mathmagics, just to name a few. There are tons more I just haven't gotten around to checking them all out. I don't understand how I am a fanboy. I legitimately gave reasons as to why I prefer iOS, and this is coming from a long time android user! Also, I'd rather have an application than having to rely on the web. What if I don't have internet connection or my phones battery is too low to tether? I dont know why you question me like I'm an idiot and there cant possible be any apps of use on other systems.

Whether you like it or not, a lot of android apps are ports from iOS. Its funny how people get so upset about certain brands or companies, why can't we just enjoy all technology instead of being dedicated to certain brands and getting all butthurt? People here literally foam at the mouth when anything positive is said about other brands. Google sky and earth are good apps, but aren't practical for studying. Theyre more for toying around with.

No. I said that because people here try to persuade themselves that customization alone makes the XOOM worth the money and everything else is so boring compared to it.

No, only people with hugely outlandish stories about how slow and laggy the Xoom is. And that is has no apps. Really, come on, this is way beyond subjective analysis. We can all appreciate a user preferring iOS but spreading obvious propaganda is another thing. Just say you don't care for Honeycomb.

I think the xoom is laggy compared to the IPAD. Apps... who cares, I mean a good app for you is a dumb toy for me and visa versa. But to your point there are some things the ios does and does well regardless of how locked in the OS. It like a Home Owners Association. I would hate yp live in one but others love it as it maintains a certain level/quality of living. That being said this is Android turf so the apple folks are gonna get Android'ed. Funny thing is soon the Sammy folks will be hatting on the MOTO folks who will hate the Toshiba folks. We are all creating our own tribes. This should be a college course.

Arcadia - Excellent post. Apple has done an amazing job with tablets, they made the market and lead it by far. I have both OSes and read so many false statements on iOS made by those who never used it.

As you noted having flash is seldom an advantage, sites and apps optimized for iOS produce better results. I down side to iOS is the requirement to use iTunes on a single computer,
thats a hassle much more than the lack of flash, which is becoming a plus on many sites.

You have to give Samsung, Motorola and Blackberry credit for joining the game,
but the Galaxy Tab, Xoom and Playbook look to be more of a starting point than a contender.

With Apple's resources and Steve Jobs leadership they seem to streamline success. Google and it's many partners at times come across as too many cooks in the kitchen, impeding direction.

The Xoom vs the Playbook might be a better comparison seeing how 1st gen non-apple devices compare.

my lady has an ipad 2 and all she has to do is open up farmville, netflix, GOOGLE VOICE!, Facebook app ipad (friendly) and then she laughs at me.. SMH. She really got me with GOOGLE VOICE! How the hell do I argue with her about my android powered Tablet when I cant even use one of the most cherished google apps.. SMH

Ugh, I seriously don't know what all the hubbub is about apps. Everyone keeps going on about apps! I've had both iOS and Android, and I don't care about apps. They're nice, but productivity wise, none really are beneficial to me (games DO NOT count as productivity).

In fact, when I had iOS, I actually downloaded more cydia apps than appstore apps. Without the iron grip of apple, those apps were actually more useful.

Anyways, it just really gets me that people use apps as a leverage for any OS. I remember when apple came out with the appstore and it only had a handful of useful apps (keyword: useful). It is highly illogical to compare a mature app economy with one that is just growing (honeycomb's, not android in general, since android app market is growing exponentially...)

what you find to be not important for you , is important for others. Google voice is extremely useful for me . as is netflix. games not so much, but they are nice to have.

Right, of course its all a matter of preference, but what I'm getting at is that comparing apples apps with androids apps is illogical. One being more mature than the other. Now if the two companies came out at the same time, THEN would it be a fair comparison.

My comments in the beginning were my opinions, and not to be used for others. My mistake, I should have put a disclaimer there.

As someone who has been using Android devices for the past year, I was very excited about the Xoom and picked one up on day one. I also picked up an iPad 2 on day one which is by first ever iOS device.

XOOM Thoughts: The first two or three days I had the XOOM I was very unimpressed. Sure the operating system looks cool, but in real world usage, it was worthless to me. As an engineering student, tech journalist, and YouTube Partner, the Motorola XOOM wasn't of much use. It has NO applications. In the month it's been out it's only gained like 35 apps. I don't know what you guys use tablets for, but I use them to be more productive in work and school, not to just browse the web and tinker with.

Android Honeycomb has potential but it's super buggy and laggy. There have been instances where my XOOM was on standby mode and it simply wouldn't wake up! I thought the damn thing was broken, then it decided to wake up 5 minutes later. I've seen my fair share of random reboots, widgets crashing, lagginess when going from screen to screen, and the home screen appearing blank when i return from an application. It's really annoying. Web browsing is good, but as someone who browses over 20 different sites daily, flash isn't as important as die hard android fanboys make it out to be. Sure it's useful here and there, but saying the iPad cant view 95% of the web is pure ignorance and only shows you have never owned one.

Hardware wise the XOOM is not a slouch. It is a tad heavy for me to hold in one hand, especially while in bed reading books. Holding it in portrait mode is extremely awkward because of the unnatural dimensions and the branding on the side of the screen. The display is also not as good as the iPad 2's. IPS has superior viewing angles, color saturation, and sharpness. Sure, you wouldn't notice if all you had was the XOOM, but as a tech reviewer I found the screen to be disappointing in certain areas almost immediately. It's also impossible to read in direct sunlight.

iPad 2 Thoughts: It is my first iOS device so these impressions are from a long time android user. I always had the preconceived notion that iOS was so "boring and stale" when compared to android. Like many others, I said this without ever owning an iOS device, which is ignorant. If you find it truly boring, you must have ADD. iOS has SOOOO many more quality applications and games than android its not even funny. The same apps I've used on android are almost always much higher quality on iOS. Furthermore, iOS has some of the best games I've seen. Infinity blade, Real Racing 2 HD, Dead Space, Final Fantasy 1-3, World of Goo, the list just goes on. It feels like a gaming console. I didn't know this until getting an iPad, but every game android gets has been on iOS for several months in the past, it's ridiculous.

Sure iOS doesn't have widgets and its only screens filled with icons. But what do you get in return? Netflix, Hulu, TONS of amazing games, TONS of quality applications, and an overall more stable product. It's much thinner than the XOOM, and it makes a difference for someone who reads a lot of eBooks. The iPad actually has the same dimensions as a book so it's more natural to hold. Build quality on both devices is really good, but I give the iPad 2 the slight edge. It's thinner, and the back doesn't attract dirt, fingerprints, and scratches as much as the XOOM does.

Sure, you may not have flash or tabbed browsing natively, but those features really don't make a big difference. You can have different windows open on iOS and by clicking a button right by the search bar you can quickly jump between different windows. Furthermore, when I had the XOOM I was surprised to see that not many sites I visit even use flash. I expected browsing to be totally crippled, but it isn't. Additionally, many sites are optimized for viewing on iOS devices. If you go to gametrailers.com you can actually view all of the content as it has a special plugin for iOS devices, MANY sites do this now. Many people here will try to deny this, but those are the people who don't have both devices in front of them and are fanboys.

The iPad 2 is actually useful for me in class unlike the XOOM. I have a ton of applications for astronomy, calculus, chemistry etc. Whereas my XOOM has nothing. I brought it to class a few times and I felt stupid because it had no apps.

Whether you value widgets and customization over quality applications and games is up to you. But at least me personally, i wouldn't want to spend upwards of $500 on a tablet just to browse the web and tinker with. No ones going to compliment you on how cool your theme is, but I am sure as hell they will be surprised when you show them the Elements Period Table or Infinity Blade on iOS.

Wow that was long. The Xoom has 50 apps right now. Granted Apple iOS has hundreds of thousands. But how many of them are games and other BULLSHIT apps? I miss 0 of my applications from my first ipad. I tried my gf's ipad 2 and it does nothing better than my xoom except play bullshit games that i could care less about.

"I don't know what you guys use tablets for, but I use them to be more productive in work and school, not to just browse the web and tinker with."

Sorry but i own/run 2 midsize companies and the Ipad does nothing to make me more productive. It was a ton of games and bs apps. Nothing really productive.

I dont need a task app, calendar app; etc. Xoom's calendar is is amazing with it cloud sync which the ipad lacks if you don't buy a Me account, which i would never buy for my employees. With the Xoom i sync 3 calendars with my xoom, computer, and Blackberry and droid and everything syncs perfectly. Thats a lot more than i could say about the Ipad.

Did you ever think it was your specific Xoom? My Xoom has had no problems at all except with a few applications that FC b.c they aren't optimize for honeycomb yet. BTW ive had plenty of apps on the ipad close on me before.

"Web browsing is good, but as someone who browses over 20 different sites daily, flash isn't as important as die hard android fanboys make it out to be. "

I use a flash based Point of sale system so it is the most important feature for me atleast. I could care less if HULU and Netflix don't open btw. You can go straight onto Megavideo; etc and watch a show there for free with no subscriptions. Web browsing with the chrome browser hands down beats apples browser.

"Hardware wise the XOOM is not a slouch. It is a tad heavy for me to hold in one hand, especially while in bed reading books."

I had the ipad 1 and the xoom is the same exact weight. Even the ipad 2 is only .2 lbs lighter. IMHO all tablets at 10" suck for 1 handed use. Playbook, galaxy tab; etc win in this category anyday.

"iOS has SOOOO many more quality applications and games than android its not even funny."

Well for me and a lot of business users i could care less about the more quality games or apps. Most of the apps are useless. I don't need an amazon, ebay, bestbuy; etc app. I have an amazing chrome browser. Why use a watered down app when i can use the full website?

iOS has mainly apps that i dont even need b.c of flash. I was gonna get the ipad 2 when i thought i needed it b.c it had a specific App that i would need. Than i realized hey i could just go on their website and do more than what the app could do.

"The iPad 2 is actually useful for me in class unlike the XOOM. I have a ton of applications for astronomy, calculus, chemistry etc. Whereas my XOOM has nothing. I brought it to class a few times and I felt stupid because it had no apps."

You need apps to use in class? Sorry but IMHO all you need for class is a note taking app. Xoom has that.

There are many apps for the professional. It may not fit your business needs but to dismiss them as replaceable by websites is a bit naive.

I have a friend who is an architect who uses an iPad and goes onsite to view architectural drawings w/ an AUTOCAD app. He carries an iPad instead of 30lbs worth of maps, site drawings. There are high end PDF annotation applications for markups of floor plans. He whips out his DWG autocad drawings and pinch/zooms and makes changes on-the-fly.
You can't do that with a website. For his usage, an iPad is more convenient than a laptop. Most of his peers have now converted over to iPads.

My doctor uses an iPad that interfaces with a hospital records and x-rays.

I know a florist who uses a relational Bento database for his deliveries and clients.

I know a system architect that uses UML modeling apps for architectural design and software project management,

In each every case above, the users are not directly interacting with the public internet.

I use an iPad to manage an Oracle CRM, SQL database, our company's firewall, mail server, dns, ftp servers. I never even go onto the public Internet w/ tablet. I use X11, RDP, VNC, and very robust terminal apps on iOS. I've compared each and every Android equivalent and I will say iOS versions beat them all. I know this because I needs these types of apps I use for my job day-in-day out. I manage terabytes of data, I move virtual machines, I set firewall rules from a tablet. I know some developers that manage their clouds of XEN/EC2 virtual server farms from iPads.

So, there are more than just "Amazon, Ebay,NetFlix" apps.

People are using iPads to interface to legacy CRM, specialize databases and the likes.

Just in the productivity/business section, there are over 20,000 apps on iOS.

Some note taking apps are better than others. I've seen some nice ones that stores notes in a query-able database. Some allow great annotations and markups and combine various elements - scans, text, images, voice.

I've seen great reference apps.

Medical students have a wider reference pool of iOS apps. Same for aspiring legal students. Some of those are very pricey but they're very sophisticated and work off-line.

Like i said for my businesses i needed Flash b.c of the flash POS system we use. Im only talking about my needs not yours :) Therefore the only app i really need is a flash enabled web browser and the calendar.

Also my situation might be different b.c i don't work for anyone else. i run two companies, so the 2 most important features to me are the Calendar and flash enabled web browser. For example i have one calendar on my Xoom for 15 of my employees so i can load up their work schedules. It is the biggest hassle to do this on the ipad. (always has syncing issues). If i wanted to do the ipad in an efficient manner id have to buy Mobile me. Just for those 15 employees it would cost me $600/year if i had to buy mobile me. So using the Xoom saves me what i paid for it right there. I know a lot of business owners who are straying away from enterprise servers and going towards free cloud based options like Google's Suite of Apps.

I was just stating that a lot of apps that i had on my ipad are now useless b.c i can have a bunch of tabs with tons of websites open. Same thing as an app to me if not better.

Now for other business uses i understand the Xoom hasn't caught up yet. However, Honeycomb has been out for what like 30 days? Did you guys really expect it to catch up in a month what took apple a year? As we saw from the explosion of Android apps in the last year and half give it some time and Android Tablet apps will catch up.

Also Xoom has evernote, which does everything you stated for a good note taking app. And evernote is one of the most popular note taking apps out there.

Also for the doctors out there Android has medscape and epocrates, which are the main apps they use.

for the architects; etc yeah apple has android def. beat. Surprising since it took them wayyyyy too long to bring out autocad for Mac.

What does that get you? I can get all that crap using google. Might not be as pretty, but all that information those apps supply, is easily accessible on the web.

Totally agree. I was a little baised to the Ipad before i got the Xoom but now i don't see any reason to get it. Why would i need apps when i have a full web browser? Computers don't have apps like these b.c we have gr8 web browsers. I understand the ipad has apps for specific work purposes like mrspeedmaster stated but it depends on the person, and i highly doubt everyone on here is using it for those purposes.

Anyways nice username. I love vince flynn' series

No I don't. Youtube works just fine on my xoom both before and after Flash. Hulu does not.

Still just listing four sites has nothing to do with 95%. Either back up your statement or retract it.

I hate it when Apple fanbois make up numbers and maybe even moreso when those on the other side do.

See below...

I'm in wedding industry that almost 90% of wedding vendor web sites are entirely embeded in Flash wrapper. Same like restaurants web site, they are almost all in Flash.

Some day HTML5 will be dominant. Some day! But for now, Flash is here.

This. I go to restaurant websites CONSTANTLY before trying a new place, and they are all in Flash. All of them.

You guys must be making stuff up unless you can show a research paper, or some sort of survey that states the obvious ;)

Why can't you use Google Voice on your Android device? I have Google Voice loaded on all of my Android devices
