*OFFICIAL* Xoom vs iPad 2 Discussions

What does that get you? I can get all that crap using google. Might not be as pretty, but all that information those apps supply, is easily accessible on the web.

Offline access. He may not have a 3G plan or wifi-access. It is nice to have a searchable off-line reference.

I wish I knew.. but you can't on here. Epic failure by google if you ask me

No, I mean, technically, why can't you? Is it just not in the market for the Xoom or something? I have it installed on my G Tablet and on my wife's Nook Color. You just have to side load it, that's all; if it's not in the market.

If I'm not mistaken you can save a web apae for offline access.

Saving a single or a few page is not the same thing as being to search from a reference library offline. For example, I do a lot of specific database queries and I may or may not know what I need until I stumble over a certain problem. It is nice to be able to search for it without an internet connection.

I have several dozen reference manuals, books, encyclopedias with me.
There are pdfs and books that work for both platforms. However, the interactive query-able reference apps are far more superior and in-depth.

You can google how to fix a carburetor but an offline app that has animations and blown interactive up-schematics will always be better than a PDF or a "saved web-page"

A medical student may not have a specific sympton for glacuoma. He/she may or may not have researched it until they need it.

I appreciate the reasoned discussion in this thread. After trying out the Xoom and hearing poor reviews about the Samsung tablets I think I'll be passing on Android tablets for the time being and I'll get the iPad 2. It will be a bummer losing the ability to easily drag and drop files but I don't see much reason to get the slower, costlier, less supported option.

I like my xoom. But holding it for a few minutes, I have to put it down.

Just bought QuickOffice Pro HD for $9.99. Now I can edit word doc and excel. With google docs integration, I can be on business trip without lugging my laptop.

It's funny, I know technically the iPad (original) and Xoom weigh the same, but the first thing my dad (owns an iPad for work) said when I gave him my Xoom was huh, it feels heavy! I think it's a matter of how the weight is distributed. Most of the time I don't notice it, but when I first pick it up sometimes it does seem heavy.

I never own an ipad before. I have Galaxy tab which is very light weight and easy to carry around (in my jean back pocket). So my comment about Xoom weight is to Xoom itself, but not comparing with ipad.

I got an iPad 2 when it first came out, and have been very happy with it. But, being a gadget-a-holic I couldn't resist getting the Motorola Xoom wifi with some Costco savings we had available, so I now own both.

After a couple days use of the Xoom, here's my initial very subjective (and rather long) comparison of the two so far for those who may be interested.

Karma,
Very, very nice write-up and review! You made some excellent comments I had not heard before. Thanks for your fairness and keep up the good work!

Thanks NCTurner, I'm glad to hear you liked it. I'm looking forward to seeing how the next couple weeks go with the Xoom. :)

Yeah, I refer to that as "Weight in hand", rather than just "weight". The iPad 2 wins hands down here.

PSkeptic- yeah, that's what I mean. I think even the original iPad wins, even though it's the same weight. It's just the way the weight is concentrated, I think.

No wonder americans are all fat wimps! Can't hold 1.5lbs for a short amount of time without whining. Geeez!

I was about to post the same thing. 1 and a 1/2 pounds, woo :-) Not like anyone would hold it up in the air while using it. You either lay on lap, chest, legs or support on one hand.

Easy. If anyone complains about that there something wrong with you, no really.

Hey, not complaining. :) Just noting that there does seem to be a difference, just thought that was interesting since there's been so much focus on the Xoom and iPad being exactly the same weight. I think you all need to chill out, don't take everything so seriously! Just a comment. I'm on your side!
