*OFFICIAL* Xoom vs iPad 2 Discussions

I am sorry, Android users are just as defensive as Apple users. Just the way it is.

I agree. This forum unlike many of the other Android forums is very similar to the Apple forums IMHO. Very defensive and I would probably also say for good cause. As a former Xoom owner (returned mine) I feel Honeycomb needs to be pushed so that it starts getting some applications.

I would have thought by now there would be more applications added since launch.

What applications do you want that are not available?

I like point and click adventure games like monkey island, back to the future. ScummVM works, but guess what...it also works on the iPad.

iMovie on my ipad 2 is better than Movie Studio on my Xoom
Garage band is slick as well

I know we have play on, but that is extra money I have to spend. Netflix is only rumored to come to tegra 2, there has been no announcement and until there is, its not here.

In terms of creativity apps iOS absolutely schools Android.

25 Tempting Music Apps for the iPad

Being able to do things like this is pretty amazing-

There's also very little available on Android in terms of helping with my photography workflow, whereas iPad has a host of tools for that.

In fact as of now I can't think of much functionality I would get out of an Android tablet besides common internet usage that I do on my HTC Incredible. Apps really do make a difference if you want something that isn't a casual (and expensive!) internet appliance.

I was about to post the same thing. 1 and a 1/2 pounds, woo :-) Not like anyone would hold it up in the air while using it. You either lay on lap, chest, legs or support on one hand.

Easy. If anyone complains about that there something wrong with you, no really.

The only problem I could see would be standing up on a subway reading from your xoom.

Many of those things didn't happen on the pad right away. And many of the good pad apps weren't working right away or were completely missing. And I've said it before, it took the pad almost 8 months to have folders and multitask. Basic stuff.

As far as apps, if you're just looking at the optimized ones -- that could be the problem. I have quite a few apps on here that aren't optimized that are sweet looking.

And both mlb.TV and netflix, I had both, sucked at the beginning. It took a long while to get smooth playback on both.

My buddy just bought an ipad2. We both brought our new toy to show each other yesterday. I touched the iPad 2 for the first time. All I can say is, wow. It's a really nice piece of hardware. It makes my xoom so bulky and heavy.

Now I started to agree with some of the points CNET mentioned in the Prizefight. 1.6lbs doesn't seem to be much but when holding as ebook reader. I have to put it down after a while. The controls are confusing on the xoom. Also, I would rather trade the multi-tasking capability to longer battery life.

But still, I DON'T WANT AN IPAD. I like Apple's products but I just don't like Apple users. They always think they are better people than you. and I don't want to be one of them =)

As much as being an Android fanboy does not want me to admit it, there are two questions:

1) What does the device do right now for me?

2) What does the device have the capability of eventual doing?

We have to accept the argument that people are buying iPad because it does what they need it to now. No one should have to wait for a device to do anything by choice. When iPad first came out there was no other real choice so waiting on functionality was a matter of necessity by early adopters.

We do not have to accept that iPad has a better philosophy and will always rule the tablet market because it is simple a better device. Us early adopters have made the decision to go with Honeycomb and in the process are accepting it's shortcoming for future gain. We are no different than the early iPad buyers.

I think the weight feeling difference has more to do with xoom's widescreen and basic physics, since most people hold it landscape, the force push against your hand is lot more than apple's standard 4:3 screen in landscape mode.

The other logical explanation was, ipad has a wider bevel. It makes it easier to grab.

I ordered a rubber case from Amazon and it arrived. It makes the grab so much better now. Without the case, I always feel the xoom is sliding off my hand.

I just don't get the whole excuses of a tablet being heavy. Folks been carrying laptops for years and that wasn't an issue. The original ipad weighs the same as the xoom and the problem with weight wasn't an issue but for the xoom it is.

errr... you don't hold laptop in your hand the whole time.

I don't own an ipad. My comment about xoom's weight is solely on xoom, not comparing to ipad.

the original ipad actually feel weigh less even though it's same weight, that's why i say it's more to do about basic physics, when you hold the tablet in 1 hand in land scape mode, the force push against your hand from xoom is a lot higher than an ipad because the 16:10 screen is wider than 4:3 one. and this issue is more serious for people with smaller hand. btw, i think the weight from xoom is not a bad thing, people using tablet all the time usually exercise a lot less :p, holding xoom every day at least give some exercise to one of your hand :)

even though i love xoom, I think honeycomb right now is too unstable, there're just too many crash and freeze. google need some serious updates to make it a worthy os for tablet.

I got one of those a few days ago as well...still trying to decide if I like and and will continue using it or not. It does give a lot of protection to the Xoom's back and sides, but it definitely "bulks it up" as well....

You don't usually hold a laptop up in the air (like a book or magazine) while using it. It not the carrying it around that is of issue, but the using of it.

Well if thats the case most people that I have seen using a tablet are sitting down. I don't see many folks walking down the street holding up a tablet.

What???? I have not had my WiFi Xoom crash yet because of Honeycomb. Apps may FC. but that's NOT HC's fault. HC has been buttery smooth and fast for me. I am impressed

I didn't get the gel case by motorola. That one is bulky. I got another one from Amazon which is a snug fit. It makes it so much easy to grab and to locate the power button. It doesn't add any bulkiness to the xoom. Check out my photos here

The xoom is not close to perfect, but I by far prefer it to the Ipad 2 my wife owns. Do I wish the xoom had 60000 apps? Sure, but not at the price of the Honeycomb OS being as boring as ios. The xoom allows me to play flash videos, the OPTION to watch old and new tv shows for free, the OPTION to download music for free, transfer media and data between my evo and xoom via bluetooth, video conference, create and edit documents, spreadsheets, etc, I have 40 plus relevant games and apps and i can use it with my slingbox player. This is more than enough to keep me happy while the app market matures. So heck no the xoom isn't perfect, but i love being able to see the evolution of the future of tablets. And don't make ANY mistakes about it, Android tablet OS's are the future.
