Root [UPDATED 28/12 - NEW INSTALLER] CyanogenMod 7/Android 2.3.4 Is avaliable for GT540!

let's see if I understood well:
First, save the rom that I downloaded to the sd.
second start in recovery mode (AS I DO THIS?, do not understand)
third, when I'm in recovery mode, select "apply zip from sdcard"
Finally select the rom and I hope and ready ok?

Are you sure you do not lose anything of what I have? or installed apps or google android apps or contacts or anything?

another question:I do all these steps with the phone disconnected or connected to the pc?
I have to play some debugging development or USB or something?
for exaple i hace the launcher ADW. when i put that update, everything will stay the same?
thanks!

Yes, that was understood perfectly. To reboot into recovery mode, you need to hold the power button until the options menu pops up, tap restart>recovery>ok then the phone will reboot into recovery mode and continue on :)

You won't lose any data on the phone, all it does is update the system to v1.7

You don't need to connect the phone to the PC, you don't do anything apart from the instructions. They tell you exactly what to do. ADW will stay the same

:)

What's a good CPU setting for both performance and powersaving?

Please answer!

The last time I saw that answered they said 245 on the low end and 806 on the high end. I set my phone to that and it seems to work well and still have good battery life.

You might try that and see what you think.

Stock/normal cpu values for a GT540 are 245 to 600.
If you drop below 245 you can, not everyone does, have problems with the phone crashing when you wake it and want to use it, and if you go as high as 845+ the phone will keep restarting as the cpu cannt handle that high.

So the best settings to start at are min = 245 - max = 806.

If you're on CM6 you can't update to CM7 via recovery, you gotta use fastboot. To keep your data you can do this:

1. Use recovery to make a backup, then update to 2.3 and restore just the data from the backup. Note: I'm not sure if this works, I'd imagine it would, I think this is the method I used to keep all my data.

2. Backup everything including apps, settings etc. using MyBackup Root from the Market. Then update to CM7 and restore the backup.

You should backup using both methods before updating to 2.3 because that way you will definitely not loose your data. The easiest way to keep everything is step 1, step 2 should be used if step 1 doesn't work.

You said that the phone gets stuck at the CyanogenMod logo screen, the first boot takes 2-3x longer than a normal boot, for me, when I update the first boot takes about 5-8 minutes with the CyanogenMod logo spinning for a while before anything happens. So just wait and it should be fine.

Ok, I am going to sound like a complete noob, because I am. I have just upgraded my phone to CyanogenMod 2.2.1. I would like to upgrade to 2.3 using the backup mode but I do not know how to get into the recovery mode to be able to select the file on my SD card. This may have been covered earlier, but I have not been able to find it in amongst the many pages. If anyone can give me a step by step guide for getting into recovery, I would be very grateful.
Many thanks
Ian

Did you install recovery when you installed CM6? If you did, then hold the Home button while powering on the phone. If you didn't then follow these instructions:

You can now install ClockworkMod Recovery to your LG GT540 without reflashing everything again! Just download the .img file from here, put your phone into fastboot mode again (Hold the camera button at power on) and open cmd again and type:
Code:
cd C:\Android
then type:
Code:
fastboot.exe flash recovery recovery_clockwork_3.0.1.9_swift.img
and to reboot:
Code:
 fastboot.exe reboot
.

To access recovery, hold the Home button whilst powering on, keep holding it while the LG logo appears, it'll then take you to the ClockworkMod Recovery screen, use the volume up + down buttons to navigate around the menu, the call button to 'click' or 'enter' and the power button to go back. From the recovery menu you can flash update.zip from the memory card and make nandroid backups of your device (a nandroid backup is a complete backup of your phone's internal drive, which you can restore at a later point if anything goes wrong). For more info on what ClockworkMod Recovery can do, do a Google search for 'ClockworkMod Recovery' (link here)
