.Telus Froyo Update Available

.. Apparently the update is now available for us Telus customers. I'm at work so can't grab it yet... let us know how your update went

I ran the update. So far everything works fine. In the process of moving applications to the sd card.

Btw, there is a step that asks you to disconnect the phone while updating, restart it, and then reconnect it and let the update program know that you've done so. If you don't do this your phone will be slow as hell. (I think some people with slow phones didn't read that step correctly)

I haven't found any bugs yet. I'm really afraid the random music playing is back, lol. I'll update this post if I find any bugs or anything neat.

Bugs
-I have an unlocked device, the APN settings got wiped during the update. This didn't happen during 2.0 to 2.1. I fixed it easily though. So if anyone has no data after updating, that's why.
- Android market got downgraded. I wish I could force it to re-update.

Neat
- new lock screen
- New media dock screen.
- comes preloaded with a task manager app
- wifi hotspot (Doesn't seem to work on fido. Need to call them to make sure they didn't disable tethering. It should be a free feature on my plan)
- There is a new keyboard
- Power control widget now does: low, medium, high, auto
- Holding down the home button now displays even more recent apps and has a task manager shortcut too.
- New gmail and youtube apps

I got issue updating.
I did a factory reset before trying to install the 2.2 update as recomanded on many forum.
The problem is that I intalled the exe from motorola website, now the phone is connected to the computer and recognized but I dont have a clue how to run the update. The only thing it installed is Motorola Driver installer and motoconnect. When I read the fact about moto connect it tell me that it wil allow auto update for the phone, but the only option I got is Auto driver update.

Someone can help me on this one It's been a while I used a PC but I normally have no difficulty with them now I'm clue less.

BTW sorry for my broken english, i'm french canadian and try to do my best

thanks

Did the update this morning without any issues. The phone was a little sluggish after the update so I did a Titanium Backup (need root), factory reset, then reinstalled everything with the restore function on Titanium backup and all was good other than the stock home screen sometimes being laggy when leaving an app. Fixed that up with the Launcher Pro app and all is good on the home screen front. The stock browser is now better than Dolphin so I switched back to it, but I may try opera and a few others to see which is the best with 2.2. Also installed Flash 10.2 and it works pretty well. It can slowdown some pages but it is still nice to have it. And the two most important things, Universal Androot still rooted the phone and Milestone Overclock works just as good as before.

Pretty happy so far but it has only been a few hours since I did all this so hopefully it continues to work well for the long haul, or until I replace it with a dual core htc or samsung...

Just in case anyone else has the tethering problem.

In your APN settings do not specify a type for the one you use to connect to the internet. Eg: internet.fido.ca

I had mine set to "default." Clearing this value made the 3g mobile hotspot work.

my phone was running a modified GOT's froyo mod, so I started fresh and flashed to the factory froyo SBF file, I seem to have lost root in doing so though. I guess my question is, can I just re-do the same rooting process with the same vulnerable recovery file I used on eclaire? or do I need to do something different to re-root to froyo?

As it was said above just use Universal Androot for a 1 touch root. I can also confirm that using this root lets you overclock the Milestone. This phone has NEVER been so snappy, it's like a whole new device. Feels like the first day I got the phone and sat there playing with it and finding apps to check out just cause.

...ok, just completed the update on my Telus Milestone, and all-in-all I'm fairly happy with the result.

After reading that the update seemed to produce a fair mixture of results, ranging from excellent to poor I decided to simply jump in the deep end, and not do any hard resets or factory wipes at all. I simply left everything the same...well, not quite true, I DID un-root (Easy Root) and took off the Milestone Overclock. Other than those two things, I didn't touch my setup.
The update took about ten minutes, and I made sure that I kept an eye open for when the updater asked me to disconnect the device and reboot (thanks previous poster).
After it was done, it WAS a bit laggy or jerky, I re-rooted and reapplied the Milestone Overclock. Those two apps worked without a hitch. I was surprised that Easy Root still worked, and greatly relieved that the Overclock was successful.
Now, she seems to be purring along no problem. I immediately moved some apps to SD (nice to see the internal memory take a jump UP), and checked out the Market, and sure enough, as a previous post said, its been downgraded on my device. But that's not really an issue for me, yet.
Oh, I just checked the wi-fi and it seems fine...plus the Market is now up to the modern version. Cool.
I've only been playing with the phone for a less than an hour so far, and everything seems okeedokee.

Yeah! Yahoo! Now, i have Android 2.2 on my Telus Motorola Milestone and it was very great. No problem! Everything perfectly works! Before the upgrade, i was upset because all the bad comantaries i have read on the forum but i'm very happy about the final result. Sorry for my poor english!

Question:
Why isnt my phone displaying the stock Froyo launcher?!? Any one know?
The one with the phone icon on the left, the browser icon on the right, the app tray toggle in the middle and on the far sides the dots to display how many panels are to each side of the screen ur currently on)

It's still the same one had before, the app tray button with the "UP" arrow and that's it!

Thanks for any feedback...

For those that have updated, please keep us updated on your experience:

1. Bugs - Especially the 4 google buttons not responding properly (4 sec lag)

2. Lower call volume or the same?

3. Phantom reboots?

4. Battery life better or worse?

5. Most important - If you could choose Froyo or go back to Eclair what would you rather have?

TIA!... :)

I still don't know how to get it... somebody care to help?

When you connect your Milestone to your PC, you should pull up the MotoPortal page on your browser. Click 'Support'. It will ask to check for updates...

Just follow the process. Easy-peasy. It warned me that I'd lose all music blah-blah, but it's all still there from MusicJunk. It also said to disable all call functions. I just put 'er in airplane mode and it went well. GMail synced all on its own as well.

Some lag with the apps to home screen, but I can live with it because now I have a fully functioning FLASH:D .

Keep in mind, I've never rooted. Just a basic MM with a few apps.

Now, I can't find Androot in the Market:confused: I'd like to try it, and then the overclock to tweak it a bit. Plus a way to move apps to SD. Any advice anyone?

Other than that, I'm pretty happy:)

^ Recently Android removed ALL root apps from the market.

Androot is OK, but "Easyroot" is easier and much better IMO. One click and you're all set.

EasyRoot can be found here --> Easy Root 1.3.4 is out!

If you want to overclock, grab "Milestone Overclock" from the market. It's a million times easier than "setcpu". Just slide the bar over to set your speed.

As for apps to SD, GoTo:

Settings--> Applications --> Manage Applications --> Click on the App that you want to move to the SD --> Click Move to SD. (Note not all apps have this feature)

Hope that helps you out... :)

Same thing for universal androot. Google it, download it, install it, click "go root" and your are rooted. Just as easy as easy root and it is free.

Thanks so much Crows, but pardon me for being technically.. um... well you know. LOL

But how do I get that from my PC on to my MS:confused:

Edit: Sorry Monster, you must have been typing when I was. Can I do this right from my MS or do I have to do it from my PC??

Gotcha

OK no problem

1. Download an app from the Market called "Astro File Manager"

(Astro allows you to install files to your phone from your SD card)

2. Download Easy Root to Your PC

(You do need to buy Easy Root - but it's only $.99)

3.Copy Easy Root to your SD card

(Make sure you remember where on the card you copy it to)

4. Open "Astro" and run the Easy Root app from your SD card and then follow the prompts... :)

Yep. I downloaded androot straight to my sd card while using my ms and then installed it from there with quickoffice. Very easy to do. Quickoffice should be on your phone already.

OK I finally took the plunge last night, and there is definitely some good, bad, and ugly IMO about the update. (more on that later)

I'm gonna break this down into 2 parts otherwise I'm gonna put people to sleep with one giant post. So here goes... :)

Part 1: The Upgrade Itself

The upgrade process was more tedious than other phones that I've upgraded to Froyo. I don't understand why for instance you couldn't do a simple OTA like the Telus Desire easily could handle. Also as mentioned by other previous posters, make sure that you pay attention to reboot the phone when instructed to fully complete the process.

Before I started, I unrooted and turned off the Milestone Overclock.

The "manual reboot" during the upgrade process happens towards the end of the install. (like shortly after the 80% mark) It's pretty simple, unplug the phone from the USB when prompted, reboot, and replug and then the upgrade completely finishes within 10-15 seconds after the replug on the reboot. Pretty straight forward.

Usually with upgrades I find it better to do a factory reset to give my phone that fresh OS feel. The phone was a little buggy so I did the factory reset and then a Titanium Restore. For whatever reason Titanium let me down this time, unlike the other times that I have used it after upgrades and custom ROMS. The phone felt almost bricked and had phantom reboots.

So I did another factory reset and downloaded everything manually. (at least the phone was Froyo factory fresh) BTW if you do a factory reset, make sure that you know or copy down your APN settings because you will lose them and you need to manually re-input them.

BTW Easy Root and Milestone Overclock both work in Froyo. (You do need the latest version of overclock in the Market if you haven't updated it recently for Froyo support)

So now I have a working Froyo Milestone and all is "somewhat" well... (More in Part 2)

Part 2: The Upgrade itself

Froyo on the Milestone seems to be good, but IMO it may not be for everyone:

The Good:

Flash
Ability to Move APPs to SD
Tethering Without Root
"New Look" Lock & Answering Calls Screen
Better Keyboard

The Bad:

(Many will argue this is a good thing) - but this is the most stubborn version of Froyo that I used.

^ If you never used Froyo before, and you were a fan of "Advanced Task Killer" then Froyo will be a shock to your system. You are going to have to learn to give up control and trust Android to handle business when you are finished with a program.

Compared to other versions of Froyo that I used - The Telus Desire and the Bell Vibrant were easier to close programs when finished.

Personally I like the option to be able to close my music player, and not pause it and leave it paused or "force close it". (You get the idea). And yes I've read every blog on why Task Killers are bad, but I still like the "option" when needed. (The built in task manager doesn't always cut it - and force close is too many steps)

The Ugly:

This version of Froyo IMO is buggier unlike the Milestone's Eclair. There is definitely lag. Sometimes it's noticeable and other times it's frustrating. You can feel the need for 512MB on Froyo, unlike 256MB for Eclair. IMO You really need Milestone Overclock to balance things out.

On the Fence:

Battery Life - Seems the same, and will update if things change one way or the other.

Milestone Overclock - I usually kept it at 800MHz on Eclair, but it feels like it needs more power on Froyo. Put it at 1000MHz and it still feels a little underpowered. Put it at 1200MHz and it sucks the battery too much and the phone gets way to HOT by the camera when browsing. Still deciding between 1000MHz and 1200MHz.

The Verdict:

If you are still on Eclair and aren't running out of space on your phone, or if you aren't missing the need for Flash right now then stay on Eclair.

If you are a fan of Advanced Task Killer and like to have more control of what Android can and cannot do then stay on Eclair.

If you want Flash, since it was advertised as a working feature of the phone you purchased out of the box, then by all means upgrade.

If you like your apps and want the luxury of MORE APPS then DEFINITELY upgrade.

My 2 cents & Hope this helps... :)

If you can't decide between 1 and 1.2 ghz, go with 1.1 (I am using 65 vsel). I moved up from 1ghz and it gave it a slight improvement, but yeah, the 256 mb is definitely showing its limitations. Sometimes it is quick, sometimes it is very slow.

Yep I've been using the Built-In Froyo Task Manager to free up memory from time to time which is frowned upon by the Android Community. Personally I could care less either way, but I've seen the most useless flame wars occurring over Task Killers/Managers.

Bottom Line - This phone would have been perfect with 512MB of memory. Froyo on the Milestone IMO is like putting a new OS on an old PC.

I wouldn't mind picking up a Milestone 2 since it's perfect specs for both Froyo and Gingerbread, but no compatible 3G version.

Atrix is really the next logical upgrade, but it's probably going to be a while before I can get my hands on a Bell version...

...great report ccrows.

While the phone isn't laggy generally (Overclock 800 MHz), I do see a definite slowdown right after wakeup. If I haven't used the phone in a bit, and I assume the android OS has slowed the processor down, it takes a couple of seconds for it to wipe the sleep out of its eyes and stretch before doing what I ask. Then, it's fine.

Another little odd thing I've seen is when I press the menu key and try to bring up the notifications, it closes on me. I go through the cycle a couple of times before it stays open. Odd, but no biggie.

I'm thrilled that Easy Root still worked. I believe the dev said in one of his blog posts that it wouldn't work, or he wasn't sure if it would work after the MS went to 2.2 Plus the fact the Milestone Overclock is still cool, is a godsend.
