AT&T to UNCRIPPLE Inspire

AT&T to Uncripple Atrix, Inspire '4G' Upstream Capabilities
April Software Patch Will Deliver HSUPA Functionality

AT&T recently found themselves on the receiving end of some "4G" angst when customers realized that two of the smartphones the carrier proclaims are "4G" weren't able to upload at 4G speeds. While AT&T wasn't clear when asked why, AT&T responses to Better Business Bureau complaints indicated that the HSUPA capabilities of these phones had been intentionally crippled. Whatever the reason, AT&T has informed users on Facebook that the company will be issuing a software update in April that will deliver HSUPA capabilities to both the Atrix and the Inspire. AT&T also says their upcoming Android-based Samsung Infuse "4G" will come with HSUPA enabled out of the gate.

------------------------------------------------------------
With the new murky ITU definition of 4G including pretty much anything, AT&T has taken to calling their wireless network "4G" like everybody else. Except as we noted briefly, several of the company's more recent smartphone releases, including the Motorola ATRIX "4G" and the HTC’s Inspire "4G" -- don't really fully support AT&T's idea of 4G. In fact, they don't yet even support the HSUPA upstream upgrades we noted AT&T completed nearly three years ago. That has resulted in several Atrix and Inspire customers filing complaints with the BBB claiming AT&T was "capping" upstream speeds, and offering hardware that didn't match the "4G" advertising blitzkrieg AT&T has been engaged in.

AT&T PR has been a little murky about what was happening, initially suggesting the Inspire simply didn't support HSUPA, when in fact it technically does. AT&T's response to the Better Business Bureau complaints holds more detail. A user posting to the XDA Developers forum has posted AT&T's response to his complaint, which confirms the phones support the HSUPA standard, AT&T just hasn't turned the functionality on yet:

BBB RESPONSE:
(user) complains that the recently released Motorola Atrix does not offer speeds anywhere near what advertised speeds claim. He is requesting activation of 4G services and removal of the cap on the Motorola Atrix services. Account research regarding this complaint shows that AT&T is focused on delivering a wide choice of solutions and the best possible Smartphone experience to our customers. Be assured that AT&T has not "capped" the upload speeds on the ATRIX. The ATRIX is a HSUPA-capable device, and we currently are performing the testing and preparations necessary to ensure that, when we turn this feature on, you will continue to have a world class experience.

In other words, the phones AT&T are advertising as offering a "4G" experience are actually being crippled so they max out at about 300 kbps upstream, in sharp contrast to AT&T hype surrounding their "4G" network and the revolutionary promises surrounding the Atrix, the launch of which was already soured by AT&T's dubious pricing. Keeping these devices penned in on the upstream suggests AT&T's privately still not quite fully comfortable with their network's performance in the age of smartphones, despite all of the "4G" rhetoric. We're going to note here that like most carrier-imposed restrictions, this can all be avoided (on both Inspire and Atrix) by rooting your phone.

The article I linked said that ATT will START enabling higher speeds in April and by the end of the year, 1/3 of customers will still not have it. Even the quote above does not say it's coming on-line April 1. But hey, maybe you're right and ATT was just making up stories in order to make themselves look bad.

What the heck are you rambling about 1/3 isn't a lot of people. That's what 15-20 million of the 97 million so 77 to 82 million will have those speed??? April is the update for hsupa , it arrives as they turn on hspa+ in markets people will get faster speeds come April so I don't know why you feel you need to chime in with your bs all the time.

yea, what she said, lol..

Now if they can work with HTC, maybe AT&T can work to uncripple the battery life on my Inspire.......

While I agree that it will certainly take time to roll everything out, 1/3 of 97 million AT&T customers is about 32-33 million people that still won't have the speed by the end of 2011 (not 15-20 million)

this is the only thing that you people need to read!@

Well, it's TRUE. There are many advantages to rooting, but with the HTC Inspire, rooting is *not* a simple process, like it was with last year's high end android phones. I rooted my Inspire last weekend, and it was a BEAR.

Well hopefully by now AT&T is finally ready for some serious bandwidth usage. They nicely bought some time for the upgrades by "accidentally" messing with HSPA+ phones.

I found the one click link to that site... thank you!!!!! Reading all I can...don't have any backup software or anything else yet...so trying to figure out what to do/use.. I don't want to lose the apps I have already installed, etc... Seems that MOST of what I read is geared NOT towards anyone that has never done this before and totally understands all the lingo.. I can make a computer walk across the floor and hack my way into many things....but I will admit to being totally lost when it comes to doing anything with phones...and especially android.. I see many posts about ROMS... ok, I am not stupid, I know what roms are..have 1000's of them for arcade and video game systems.... but what roms do I want for my phone? What's the best (yes, I know it's to taste..) but where does anything talk about them? Tell what each does and why? Why do I want rom x over rom z??? Does this info exist anywhere?? If so, please, point me there...cause again, not stupid about how to search ... I apparently am just not searching the right terms... Oh..lastly.. Does all this have to be done on a PC or can it be done via MAC??? I have both, but use the MAC way more (on it now...) - Greg

There is some for mac but alot more for PC. Your welcome:)

A good place to back up what apps you have is appbrain and google also keeps track also. Whenever I flash a new rom and then always come back to cm7, google puts them back. But once your rooted you save a backup of everything! I like cm7 cause it suits me good, easy on the battery plus it has a ton of themes for it. Like my boot animations and status bar. I really don't mind having htc sense or not. I have less issues with cm7 than the others I have tried, plus I have to have mu honeycomb rotory lockscreen.
