I think the 3D potential is cool, but if that was the ONLY improvement, I would be keeping the EVO 4G.

I feel bad for those stuck with an EVO for the next 1.6-1.8 months, because you can say it till your blue in the face that you don't want it, but you DO want this phone.

Well I'm ''stuck'' with my EVO for another year. So no reason to feel bad lol. The EVO 3D is going to be an awesome phone. Theres no doubt about that. I'm just happy with what I have. While I do want the latest and greatest....my phone will suit me for now. The EVO is still a beast in my book. Next year will be a different story though. Mark it down...I will be getting the successor to the EVO 3D.

the middle class makes up the majority of america, thus the middle class will make up the majority of phone sales. i highly doubt that paying $200 a year to upgrade a cell phone is breaking the bank by any means.. even paying full price at $400 shouldnt be a big deal especially considering you can sell your original phone and make up for a quarter of that at the very least.. people think way too much into this. does money play a factor, definitely.. does it play a bigger one on the middle class than the high class, of course.. is it going to hold the majority of users from upgrading their phone to what they see as a worthwhile transaction once a year, only if your really cheap

so all of this ranting going on about how the middle class wont upgrade blah blah blah.. probably only applies to you, yourself, and a small percentage of smart phone users across the nation.. when people want to upgrade, their gonna upgrade.. regardless of their social class, age, or gender

Economics plays a huge role in the success or failure of a product. You do realize companies pay attention to social class, age, and gender when marketing products right? The small percentage you speak of may not be the portion that doesn't allow HTC/Sprint to break even by selling the EVO 3D.

Yes, the economics of it play a huge part (the entire part really), and yeah, simplifying the demographics of buyers to 3 income classes will never give an accurate account of how well a product is going to sell.

It comes down the the preferences of the individual. Which in our case can accurately be broken down into three broad categories of preferences (assuming consumers are acting rationally).
(1) - If Utility derived from owning the device is > The price of an UNsubsidized unit, then that person will definitely upgrade if they are financially able.
(2) - If Utility derived from owning the device is < The UNsubsidized price, but > the Subsidized price, then the person will upgrade if they have the subsidy available and they are financially able.
(3) - If Utility derived from owning the device is < The Subsidized price, the person will not upgrade, even if they are able.

As you can see, it's pointless to target income levels, because even if a person has a huge income, but doesn't value the device, they are just not going to buy it. Likewise, a person with a low income, that values the device more than the price tag, will buy the device (Ceteris Paribus).

Taking the above 3 preference categories into consideration, now marketing comes into effect. The purpose of marketing is to amplify the expected utility that a consumer would expect to gain from a device. This is supposed to tip that Utility/Price equation in favor of Utility (i.e. a purchase).

At this point I could ramble on about the various types and purposes of marketing demographics and targeting strategies, but that would be getting away from the point.

The point is that financial status is not going to accurately predict an outcome. First and foremost it must be that Utility > Price in order for the product to desired. Then it must be that Available Finances > Price. And finally Available Finances for Phone > Competing uses for that money.

Considering it's not really possible to specifically tell people that buying a phone is more desirable than every other thing that could be used with that money, and it's just as impossible to specifically target those who have the money to pay the price (who may not want it anyways), it just comes down to convincing people that the product is badass and being sold at a great price, then letting those with the available funds show up as they may.

I believe the EVO had a lot of buzz about the phone last year around this time. I don't think anyone knows that the 3D is coming out and the EVO basically sold itself without a lot of commercials. I saw a commercial the other day advertising the EVO 4G and the EVO Shift all in the same commercial. I think the EVO 3D will be a replacement phone for people if their EVO 4G breaks and they don't want a refurbished EVO.

After joining this website and reading over a few postings. I feel like people are trying to sale to others why they must have the EVO 3D. If I wanted a device, I would just buy it and not tell the world why I need it. I refuse to let someone talk me out of something once I have made up my mind.

However, there is buzz about Apple producing a 3D iphone.

For me, the other features/improvements of the Evo 3D don't matter -- the 3D feature negates all of it. It's too cutting edge, too unsupported (where's the 3D content? There isn't any...yet), too fad-ish, and too much of an unknown, etc. Is it interesting? Sure. Building my own hovercraft in my garage would be interesting, too, but that doesn't mean that I'll find it useful to commute to work every day.

3D may very well be in the future of all phones, but which 3D will it be? There are no standards, and everyone seems to be offering different methods of implementing 3D. As appealing of a feature as it seems now, 3D could make that phone worthless in 6 months if a different, better standard in 3D is implemented from another company and all the content providers decide to support this other company's 3D standard.

I feel bad for those stuck with an EVO for the next 1.6-1.8 months, because you can say it till your blue in the face that you don't want it, but you DO want this phone.

Sorry, dude, but I don't want this phone (the Evo 3D), and my face is not blue. I'm perfectly happy with my Evo 4G. I purposely wait to buy electronics. I'll happily let others lead the way on that cutting edge path and reap the benefits of a nice, stable device after everyone else goes through new device Hell. This has been my strategy for over a decade now, and I can definitely say that I do not have even a fraction of the issues with my devices that everyone else does who HAS to have the device the very day it was released. It's just not me. If the 3D standard implemented in the Evo 3D turns out to be well supported, and the phone turns out to be reliable and a good performer, I'll probably pick one up myself in about 1.5 years.

Otherwise, I'll be able to avoid it and then give all of you big, fat I-told-you-so's here on the forum. Haha.

The really funny part is going to be when the Evo 3D comes out and all us "poor Evo 4G owners" will end up with a really nice Gingerbread/new Sense ROM with everything (GPS, BT, 4G, HDMI, etc.) working, and yet no one will even know how to root the 3D yet. Haha. Then I will feel bad for all you people who felt the pressing need to go out and buy a release date Evo 3D. Enjoy your stock phone, and thanks for the ROM...haha.

Ole bean I was referring to just general public knowledge.

Well, in that case, I don't know how you know that applies.

For people in the market for smartphone that are not making impulse purchases, it doesn't take them long to go from uninformed to informed.

And as this thread is discussing people upgrading their existing Android phones, many with Evos such as yourself, everyone here does know it exists.

Everyone who takes the time to post in this forum doesn't even make a dent in the buyers market for smartphones. Most people have never heard of this website.

I don't see why people are bashing this phone (3D). This phone won't appeal to everyone, I don't think it will be a hit like the 4G but I'm sure it will sell very well. I will be upgrading because of the better faster processor, internal memory, and ram. I careless about the kickstand our the 3D tech if they come with the phone great of not o well. Plus I still get my yearly upgrade.

I love my evo and if the only addition was the 3D then no this phone would not be a worthy phone to upgrade to.

Chaps, I'm willing to wager an "I was wrong" if the EVO 3D doesn't sell out the first day like the EVO 4G did on launch day. I have a feeling the EVO 3D is a gimmick despite the upgrade in hardware/specs.

HTC will overstock the EVO 3D and it will not sell as well as the EVO 4G on the first day.

I have to get the Nexus 4g. I need that screen. :)
Love my EVO and my Optimus V on Virgin Mobile....why yes I am a phone whore thank you.

The only thing I'd give up my Evo for is the EVO 3 4g. I'd call the Thunderbolt EVO 2.5 the only thing it needs is a Super Amoled screen and to be on Sprints Network.

IMOP I think Sprint is hurting the brand name a little calling the 3D an EVO.

Actually, not to make phone customers sound stupid, but I'm sure quite a few will see and/or hear "3D" and have that translate to "3G".

They might start thinking it's a downgrade for those who don't want to pay for or can't use 4G. You have to remember most people are not tech savvy and really have to have things spelled out for them when it comes to electronics. I think some manufacturers actually rely on this to sell their phones, but I don't think Sprint or HTC would want this for the Evo 3D.

I'll be making Sprint sweat through next March (when my contract is up) while I wait for the next big thing after the EVO 3d.

Agreed, my dumbass iPhone using friend, can't get it through his thick skull, that "iPhone 4" is the 4th generation iPhone, and has nothing to do with 4th generation mobile data.

I was listening to the Engadget mobile podcast and they were pretty impressed with the Evo 3D. Not saying that I'd buy one based on their review, but it does look interesting.

Anyway like most people here I'm stuck until the end of the summer until I can upgrade so it's a mute issue. Plus I'm really more interested in picking up a tablet this summer so I'll probably wait as well.:D

I won't even go there on forums anymore. I have too many iPhone owning friends and even (yes, embarrassing) family that there's just too much material and too many funny and scary stories.

I lost count on the number of arguments/debates I've had over what the 4 means for the Evo 4G versus the iPhone 4.
