Root 11/Jan 3.1 - MoDaCo Custom ROM for GSM Hero

I'm still rocking 2.2, is there much benefit of updating?
Assuming Sense with 2.1 is coming soon would it be a waste of my time?

I think you'd notice a difference. ;)
Remind me how its done again?

Install update.zip?

I have only ever loaded 2.2..

3.1 can have themes?

Is there anyway to retain data?

As I understand it wiping the phone isn't necessary in most cases. I just went from 3.0 to 3.1 without wiping, but obviously that's less of a jump than in your case.

No 'wipe' is required for anyone coming from MCR 1.2 onwards, or the stock 2.73.x updates.

What buttons get you into recovery?
I forgot :o

hold down "home" whilst tuening on phone. that'll bring up the recovery screen after a few seconds of holding.

ALSO NO NEED TO WIPE before installing MCR from version 2.1 onwards.

POWER ON while holding down HOME.

Oh, and yes you should be okay without a wipe. No themes - this is still the 2.73.405.xx base, albeit heavily optimised and with Teknologist's recompiled and tweaked kernel.

I've had no issues whatsoever with either of the betas or the RCs.

I took the plunge and rooted my phone (finally)... took about 3 hours!

I tried the flashrec version with about 5 different versions of flashrec till I found out T-Mobile G2's don't work with it! Then I tried the downgrade / goldcard method, but getting adb to work took about an hour... then HTC Sync wouldn't work cause I was on Windows 7

Anyway, it's working now, it's lightning quick, I've learnt quite alot, already got A2SD on an ext4 partition, and I must admit it is pretty snappy compared to stock.

Yes but isn't 3.0 on that base and can be themed to an extent?

EDIT: Is the WaveSecure update.zip any different from the Market one?

Doesnt seem much change there, certainly not changes im desperate for. Think the next update i do will be for android 2.1 when it eventually arrives.

I don't think the market version will survive a hard reset, where as the modaco one will

LONG BOOT.. or am I doing it wrong?

Got it :)
I need to reboot but I am doing a Ti Backup first..

Sorry. I was on the wrong railroad, never mind track. You're correct, of course. :o

@vido.ardes: welcome to the club, brother! :D
The only difference I can see between this and 2.2 is that resting RAM is maybe 20MB more than before..

I'm off to try some themes..

I flashed my G2 for the first time last week and I feel your pain :P Goldcard was my only option too. But don't worry, next time you update it's as simple as putting the ROM on the SD and flashing. 10 minutes max :)

Did you update your radio too? I noticed quite an improvement over the version the G2 came with originally.

Mat, assuming you're on the latest ROM from T-Mobile like we were, this is what you need to do;

First, you have to downgrade your phone to an older ROM.
How To: Downgrade Your HTC Hero So It Can Be Rooted | The Unlockr

Then you can follow the instructions from the sticky at the top of the forum
http://androidforums.com/htc-hero/19660-guide-installing-modaco-custom-rom.html

Cheers for that mate will watch the video now, would you say its worth doing it or is it just best for me to stick with 1.5 and wait for 2.1 to come out through T-Mobile (however long that will be =.=).

Well it depends how happy you are with the phone at the moment really. I upgraded is because it meant I could install apps on the SD card (I'd almost filled my phone memory). Plus, it is a little quicker than before, and doesn't seem to slow down as much when you've opened a lot of apps. (Although maybe that bit's just my imagination :P). Like I mentioned before updating the radio seems to have improved my wifi/network signal strength.

The only downside seems to be that google maps crashes if you try to open it. I haven't read about anyone else with that problem so maybe wiping it and flashing again would fix that, but I dont use google maps anyway.

Since 2.1 could still be months away I decided to go for it.

@Xitro Yeah I did, not a huge improvement but I get pretty good reception anyway.

@matt Be sure you research thoroughly and set aside at least an hour.

@Slug I've been putting it off for ages, thought it was about time I took the plunge

From the videos it would appear i need an adapter so i can take out the SD card and plug it directly into my computer, is there anyway around this like using the phone itself or do i have to go out and buy an adapter tomorrow?
