They went from locked to signed with the Thunderbolt and there has been much rumor that they will start encrypting them for the next round of phones (3D, Sensation). I hope they don't.

The Evo's bootloader also required signed images. In the original root method, the released HBOOT image was replaced by a signed Engineering HBOOT. So there's no difference between the state of the bootloaders between Evo and Thunderbolt, or any other HTC phone. The big freakout with the Thunderbolt is just FUD. HTC is not on a gradual path toward encrypted bootloaders. That's not to say that they couldn't suddenly start encrypting them, but the Thunderbolt is not evidence that HTC is leaning in that direction.

BTW, the root method for Thunderbolt is also to replace the released HBOOT image with a signed Engineering HBOOT image. Once done, the bootloader is unlocked and will allow you to flash to the various partitions.

For some reason, im just not blown away with the 3d. Ill stick with this one until something exciting comes out.

For me, the other features/improvements of the Evo 3D don't matter -- the 3D feature negates all of it. It's too cutting edge, too unsupported (where's the 3D content? There isn't any...yet), too fad-ish, and too much of an unknown, etc. Is it interesting? Sure. Building my own hovercraft in my garage would be interesting, too, but that doesn't mean that I'll find it useful to commute to work every day.

This is such a dumb statement. The 3D capability negates nothing. It doesn't make the processor any slower, it doesn't lower the resolution of the screen, it doesn't retrofit Sense 1.0, and it doesn't fill up the extra internal memory. It isn't as though if you switch the camera to 2D (which you can do, you know), that you lose everything else that the phone does. To say that the fact that it has an available 3D camera is a deal-breaker is asinine.

The 3D AT WORST, is a gimmicky feature that provides no relevant benefit to the average consumer. Even if that is the case, it doesn't change the fact that the Evo 3D offers a lot of other upgrades over the original Evo.

Explain to me how the establishment of a 3D standard that varies from the Evo 3D renders "that phone worthless in 6 months". There were VERY few people that bought the Evo for the 8mp camera and there will be VERY few that buy the Evo 3D for the 3D camera. Selling point? Sure. Primary function upon which all other uses of the phone rely? Not even close, buddy.

Here are the only reasons I can see for one not wanting to upgrade to the 3D:

1. Cost (upgrade eligible or not)
2. Want/need that kickstand
3. Wanting to use the upgrade for something else

Beyond that, there is nothing to suggest that it simply won't be a better phone. While the possibility of some serious issues remains (see Epic 4G GPS issues), the phone will simply be better than the Evo 4G. Better to the extent that you are willing to part with $200-500? That is up to you.

You take your rationality and go home. ;)

LOL...Just throwing out there, since HTC (IMO) did a pretty decent job delivering a product with some "1st" released technologies.

I've narrowed down my being "on the fence" about upgrading based on 2 factors, 1) Will it perform that much better than my EVO after close to a year using it, and 2) How much will the buy-back program get me at Best Buy?

If the upgrade ends up costing me very little amount of money, I'm starting to lean towards upgrading to the 3D, just thinking of how good it'll perform in 1 year. As much as I still love my EVO now, it has gained a little 'bit of lag compared to 10/11 months ago.

You'll probably get way more selling it on Craigslist or something. Best Buy will try to make a profit from it, which will in turn jip you.

I know gaming will be crazy on the Evo 3D... that what I'm hoping to see on it, if I decide fo shell out full retail price for it since I won't be eligible for an upgrade for a few months. I will be selling some items such as my original Evo to offset the price. I'm really hoping this bad boy isn't more than $650...

Not upgrading to the EVO 3D this year, for two reasons really.

1) Going to go tablet this year. Asus Transformer and keyboard dock most likely.

2) Want to wait and see how sprint shakes out the wimax/LTE thing. I am sure they will keep wimax, but LTE is faster. So a year to see how the deal with lightsquare shakes out is fine in my book.

I am happy with my EVO right now, and while the EVO3D is nice, before I pay full price for it, I'd rather buy a nice tablet for that price.

I'm unsure about upgrading. I dislike 3D on a 2D screen, just doesn't agree with my eyes. And, I'm quite happy with the Evo 4G as it is. I'll have to play with the 3D and see what the benefits are. Time will tell.

The funny thing is that I don't think, for most, it is the 4G tech or the 'HD' camcorder that draws them to the EVO.

And for most, it won't be the 3D capability that draws them to the Evo 3D.

Then just turn off the 3D part of it. It isn't the only selling point, you know.

Not sold on 3d, and I was hoping the phone would be slimmer and lighter. The phone I really want is the Galaxy S2 but that's not coming to Sprint (or is it?). Honestly the Evo 4G was such a massive upgrade from any other smartphone that I just might keep it another year. I don't game much and it still runs all apps just fine. In 2012 I expect much better battery tech as well as better phones and hope we get another quantum leap like the Evo.

Well for the most part I will not be upgrading to EVO 3D for the following reasons.

1. The 3-D, it's a nice feature but I just know for sure that I won't be using it that much. It'll be cool to show your friends and all but the novelty will wear off quickly, I don't have a 3-D TV and I don't see any of my friends getting Evo 3D so that they can see the photos I sent them in 3-D.

2. No kickstand, I know there'll be a case sold separately but it just seems like a way to get more money off of Evo users. I could possibly live without the kickstand, but that was their signature, it separated them from all the other smart phones out there.

3. My contract with Sprint will expire next year so I'll wait for a better phone to come along, hopefully EVO 3 will blow my socks off. I look at the HTC Sensation and think to myself that should have been Evo 2.

Two of my friends won't be upgrading to the EVO 3D for some of the reasons stated above.

I have never used the HDMI out on the EVO. I rarely use 4G since I don't live there. And yet I still LOVE this phone. Like Novox or BVbull said, 3d is a gimmick at worst.

And to the dude that said he doesn't own a 3D TV, you don't need one!!!

And finally, I waited in line to receive my EVO on launch day. I will do the same for this Beeeeeeehhhhhaaaaattttcccchhhhh!!!!!!!!!

PS....never will I own a Samsung product again....NEVER!!!!

Check out 'Full HDMI' in the market! Finally, full use for the HDMI out!

+1,000,000

Edit: Well, I wouldn't say a Samsung Product in general... they do make a whole lot of things after all. But NEVER another Samsung smartphone! (I am VERY intrigued by their new 10.1" tablet though...).

I do plan on getting the Evo 3D mainly because I'm eligible for the annual upgrade. If I weren't, I obviously would not pay the additional ETF just to have it.

I also plan to sell my Evo private party. I'll even throw in 1 full month of support. Hey, just doing my part to make people realize how awesome Android is. I'll sell it rooted but flashed with a stock ROM with all my data wiped. I might have SetCPU installed and some other settings tweaked for great battery life out of the box. I figured I can get worst case $100 for it, so, another $100 out of pocket for the Evo 3D doesn't seem so bad, assuming the phone is priced at the $199 mark. But even if I don't sell my Evo, I'd be willing to splurge on this phone.

1. I wouldn't buy it for the 3D either, but I didn't buy the Evo for the HD camcorder. If it ONLY had a 3D camera, then it would be a drawback. Having it as a one-click option makes it a plus, in my book. In addition, as someone else stated, you don't need a 3D TV to take advantage of it. How anyone can say that the fact that the phone has a 3D option is a bad thing is beyond me. It is a moot point at worst.

2. I will miss the kickstand as well, but I sure wouldn't let that small, easy to replace feature keep me from other more important goodies like image quality, speed, and upgraded user interface. Different strokes, though, I suppose.

3. This is the real reason you won't be upgrading. The improvements from the Evo to the Evo 3D aren't worth the hefty pricetag, to you. I get that. I have yet to see a phone that I would shell out $500 for and the Evo 3D is no exception.

I forget what I voted and what I may have stated at the beginning of this thread, but the more I think of it, the more certain I am that I will be getting the 3D. Plenty of AWESOME things about the phone. I've been thinking it over and the list of "cons" reads as follows:

1. No kickstand
2. $200 (I'm upgrade eligible)

The "pros" side is much more extensive, plenty to overcome the kickstand that I can live without (and remedy for very little $) and, not that I'm a baller, but putting away $200 fits within the gadgets/goodies/entertainment budget that I give myself.

Another con left off the list (though is only a rumor right now, but will be an incredibly massive con if it comes true) is the rumored encrypted bootloader.

If I'm shelling out any amount of money for a smart phone, I want to make that thing MINE and I want to have it operate at its full potential.
