Will photos uploaded to flickr or facebook still be viewable as 3d?

If I uploaded pictures taken in Evo 3d to Flickr or Facebook, are those photos still viewable as 3d pictures by me on Evo 3d or by other people who have Evo 3d. Obviously, people who do not have Evo 3d won't be able to see it as 3d, but I am wondering if Evo 3d owners will still see the pictures in 3d?

Another way to ask the question is what is the file format of the 3d photos?
 
At the moment no one is quite sure, but the expectation is that you will have the option to transfer 3D photos to another device in either 3D or 2D

The phone of course gives you the option to take photos and videos in 2D or 3D but as many have wondered; what if I take a great picture in 3D, can I use it as a 2D image. I reckon so, but we'll have to wait and see.

Remember though that the 3D photo is made up of two 2megapixel images, so they will be lower quality than the 5megapixel 2D photos.

I certainly hope there will be an option to output 3D content as 2D for those of us that don't have a 3D tv

What I want is not to output 3d photo in 2d format. What I want is output 3d photo in 3d format onto Flickr or Facebook or something else. and being able to view the photo in 3d by other evo 3d or possibly even other 3d devices like LG Optimus 3d.

As you mentioned, 3d photos comprise of 2 2d photos. I wonder if they are stored as two files on the file systems and there is a software that put them together. Or there is some special file format?
 
On the other thread (http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/321232-who-sick.html), there are now 6 people in the poll who said they have evo 3d already. Hope that some of them care to illuminate me.

If you read the thread, it's pretty clear that those people (me included) are just being silly. No one has the phone yet. Didn't mean to confuse!

Youtube supports 3D content. But they require 3D content to be uploaded in a certain way. The left channel on the left side, right channel on the right side. So basically you're uploading a video with an aspect ratio where width is 2x normal. So a 16:9 regular video becomes 32:9. Youtube then splits the video down the middle and generates the 3D using left side and right side. Make sense?

In that manner, you can upload your video to youtube in any video format you want (just like you do for regular videos now). The question is if the Evo will create that 32:9 video when it uploads to youtube. This goes back to standards. There's still no standard way to transfer 3D content.

Let's say the Evo doesn't create the video in the way youtube requires it. But you may be able to create it yourself by first getting the Evo-made content onto your computer and then using video-editing software to conform it to YT's requirements.

Now, back to your question of Flickr, FB, etc. First step is to go to these sites and see if they even SUPPORT 3D content. If they do, you have to find out what THEIR requirements are for submitting 3D content. For photos, they might just require that you submit 1 left channel image and 1 right channel image. Then the question becomes whether these sites generate 3D in a way that allows your Evo3D to detect that it's 3D and show it properly.

Too many unknowns right now, but all this stuff is going to get resolved VERY soon because of devices like the Evo3D that's capable of generating user-created 3D content. The demand for this stuff to "just work" will be high.

If you watch the video, roughly half to 2/3 of the way through, the HTC rep mentions that when you share your 3D video/pics, they have a prompt asking you if the device/website you're sending it to is 3D enabled. If not, it'll auto-convert back to 2D and then send it. Kinda neat.

Your assumptions and inferences were all fair indeed. I have just been away from the forums for so long that I needed to throw out an asinine and slightly witty (but mostly asinine) comment to knock the "rust" off. Any dimension ehhh HTC? How about the 6th Dimension?

Thank you, that is such a great explanation on youtube 3d.

in order to share 3d photos. it sounds like we need an app to do that.

evo 3d will have to provide API for app developer.
After snapping a 3d photo and assuming it is created as two photos (one for the lef channel, one for right channel), the app will upload both pictures to a server.

Another user of Evo 3d will use this app to view a 3d photo. This time, the app fetches both left channel and right channel) photos from the server. And call a Evo3d API to construct the two photo together to present it as a 3d photo.

I guess my next question is whether the API is available. I'll go dig around on HTC website to see if there is any info about API.
 
This may be interesting, fwiw - Viewing Stereoscopic Images

My college organic chemistry textbook had tons of stereo pictures of molecules. You could either cross your eyes, or you could wear the supplied glasses that basically cross your eyes for you (kinda like the lenticular display, except it's doing its thing on the eye side, not the image side). I loved it. Being able to see the depth and structure of the molecule made things SO much easier to understand.
 
I saw a prof somewhere years ago trying to popularize VR so you could walk through organic chem molecules - forgot about that.

What about those stereo pictures so popular in the early 90s? As I recall, you didn't cross your eyes on those, you spread them out - simply by focusing on an imaginary point far behind the actual picture. Tiring. What were they called?

Also - found this link - supporting the SbS / top-bottom thing I posted in the Evo 4G forum -

All we really know is that they advertised you could watch 3D movies from a source such as Blockbuster, and play content via the port.

If 3D really works over DLNA, and I don't know if does, then that would suggest a de facto standard.

But so long as it plays foreign content and can stream it via HDMI, then it's as future-proof as any of today's 3D gear.

Meaning: more than zero, less than certainty.

Fwiw, while final delivery through the tv varies, the tv inputs are standardized already. DirecTV, BD, etc, all work with the present TVs.

Whatever format the Evo 3D uses, guaranteed it wasn't created in a vacuum.

And note in the popular CTIA Evo 3D video, the Sprint rep explicitly said the beast supports left-right (SbS) and top-bottom formats in the input stream.

PS - After reading up on stream standards and 3D photo image standards - no reason it wouldn't work thru DLNA.

Autostereograms.

Yeah, if you stand at the right distance and focus on your reflection (assuming the stereogram was in a glass pic frame), suddenly the 3D just hits you. I've always been pretty good at lining up the double images without any sort of aid, whether it's focus far or cross eye.

Oh - great tip! I could get them instantly in print, this was the first time I got one instantly on-screen. Focusing on your reflection = focusing at a distance twice as far away as the pic. And thanks for the name. :) :)
 
No, I'm not convinced that the 2x distance thing is necessary. There's only one point in distance from picture where that works. That's why when you find that point, the 3D pops into view without effort. If it were always 2x, reflection trick would work at any distance, and it definitely doesn't.

The farther away you stand from the pic, the less distance behind the pic you need to focus. Again, this has to do with the arc degree between stereo images relative to your field of view.

The reflection trick is for people who have a hard time manually focusing behind the pic, since there's really nothing to look at. Reflection gives them something concrete to focus on. Then, moving closer or farther to find that sweet spot....

OK - well, point is, as you call it - it's far-focus 3D, and without having to back up or do other, looking at the reflection - or 2x - was necessary for me.

And at 2x it didn't pop out - it did instantly relax my stare on the screen surface, and let me notice the image quickly at whatever the focus really turned out to be - just like I used to with prints.

I'm used to just gazing while I think, so gazing and finding the image when printed was always easy - but I've never been able to gaze at a screen, I've never liked the move-back advice I've gotten for these, so your trick helped me way beaucoup. :)
