3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

You can easily get $300.00 for your evo on ebay

Based on the current listings, all of the $300+ listings are "buy it now," and no one is buying.

The only listings that are active are ones that are bid up, and those are selling around $200.

Expect this to drop when the Evo 3D is released.

While Evo's are currently going for 150-200 on craigslist and ebay...the market will soon be flooded with Evo 4G's. Demand is going to drop and supply is going to go way up...simple economics says the value therefore is going to drop. The other thing about this is convenience. It may not be the BEST deal but it will be convenient because you don't have to worry about listing it/finding a buyer, shipping it, etc.
I will probably give my Evo to a family member but $100 for a 1 year old Evo (as you upgrade) isn't all that bad I guess.

I'm keeping my EVO. Never know if I have to send the 3D back for a trade. I will need another device to hold me over just in case there is a shortage for replacements...........

You make a good point. Maybe I'll pick up an Evo 4G after the price on them plummets because of the 3D being released...as a back up.

IMO even after the 3d comes out one would still be able to command top dollar for the evo4g. People will definitely pay good money for a good phone that is contract free. I sold my pre for 150 after I had my evo, so I fully expect to get 200 for it online. ( that's if I even sell it. I envision plenty o good uses in it's retirement.).

The market won't push Evo down to $100 though. Don't forget these can be flashed to metro pcs as well.

Just remember that the vast majority of Evo owners are not eligible to upgrade after a year. But yeah, I think prices will come down briefly when there's a brief spike in Evos flooding eBay near the 3D's launch. But after that, prices could well recover. iPhones tend to follow this pattern as well.

Bored waiting to see if the Radio Shack ad is real? Curious if Sharp is doing anything else in 3D while waiting on the 3vo?

Srsly - I was - check out what Phandroid had two days ago. There's just something tragically hip in some of the Japanese designs - check it out -

Sharp Reveals Autostereoscopic 3D Clamshell Android

And yes - the screen swivels-then-folds to create a candy bar.

vids - http://www.smartkeitai.com/sharp-aquos-phone-hybrid-007sh-android-clamshell-videos/

microHDMI - and a digital TV tuner - and an IR port. 2nd-gen 1 GHz Snapdragon rumored, no idea which.

I saw that phone, it actually looks very impressive. Amazing they managed to make a clamshell device that matches and even exceeds some of the current top tier smartphones.

I don't think I could ever own a clamshell device again, but I bet for a lot of us here, there's a small, mostly hidden tinge in the back of the brain for a clamshell like the old days.

I know I used to love my old Rzr, heh.

If you don't care about the Evo 3D, then you're in the wrong thread.

As for 2.3.5, my phone will be rooted anyway so I'll have whatever OS I want.

Oh I care about it, very interested in it actually. I just like the Nexus S better and bought that instead :) Good luck finding that non buggy, 100% working 2.3.5 ported ROM though, should be a neat adventure.

That's an interesting clamshell. Looks like it'd be pretty thick closed up and in your pocket, though. But I do like how it can fold both ways. And anyone else catch that it's waterproof? That's a cool little feature, but I can't help but wonder why they made a 12MP recording camera waterproof. I can imagine why, but it's a horrible reason.

But dear Lord is that green color ugly.

For everyone who wants a premium price for their Evo there is a simple way to sell it for around 300 to 400 dollars. Flash it to Cricket. I used to do flashing on Windows smart phones and it was amazing the prices you could get. People with bad credit are desperate to have a cool phone that they can afford monthly. Now, this shouldn't give you a right to fleece people, but if the phone cost you 200 on contract, it's in good shape, and you put some work into it...well you will probably get what you ask.

dont you have to purchase a metro phone first.. so that you can activate the evo with the new phone's id info? then it cost to have them activate the new phone.

Rain. Typical Japanese deal is to take a series of commuter trains to work, many platforms have no covering, everyone's shedding water. Japan in the spring and much of winter - cold, bitter rain. Waterproof phone means fewer missed calls. 3D means you have something to watch on the longer rides. Clamshell means no pocket dialing, no bothering with lockscreens, not always taking off gloves to press buttons to call home or pals that you're running late.

Everything about it screams commuter phone.

As for the MP myth on this phone - no telling about lens and sensor quality. In a country immersed in high-tech (did I mention they have a train system that actually works?), specs count.

As for the color - c'mon, they get choices, how cool is that? Also shows how confident they are they'll sell enough to over four colors - not not just one or two, like our stunning range of black and white in the US. :D

Just musing on phone features - waiting on that RS price to verify.... ;)

On the Sprint site it is now saying that the Evo is shipping with OS 2.3

Sprint now touting EVO 4G 'with Android 2.3' | Android Central

We have heard before from Sprint insiders that the EVO 4g will get the 2.3 update AFTER the 3D is released.

If this is true and not a misprint on Sprint, the E3D should be releasing very very soon.

It will be interesting to see if current Evos get the OTA update now or after 3vo's launch. It makes sense for Sprint to make 2.3 available only on new Evos so they can clear some of their inventory. And the OTA might be withheld for existing Evo owners so there's more incentive to upgrade.

Either way, I'm very happy to see that the Evo got two major Android updates, assuming this report is true.

Either way, I'm very happy to see that the Evo got two major Android updates, assuming this report is true.

Come to think of it, the evo 4g is more than popular enough that a simple price drop would be more than enough for them to fly through remaining stock, so the fact that they actively continue to support it with gingerbread means to me that they believe that the evo 4g has plenty of life left in it. So I think once the evo 3d is released the evo will drop to $99 and will continue to sell well into the end of the year and maybe into 2012.

That's going to depend on parts supply (the Evo's Snapdragon is from a 65nm process) as well as the ins and outs of the different board layouts for production (seems all new HTCs have ports on the side, for example. Don't know myself, but I'd not expect production to go out that far. We'll see though.

They'll have to hit a point where it's simply cheaper and in everyone's best interests (read: support) to simply transition the basic Evo to a Kingdom-like device.

I've been reading the bit about the "trading up" theory and I've been thinking that it makes a limited amount of sense.

The 30-day trade in if the Evo 3D from the Nexus S 4G (from here on out, I'm referring to it only as 'Nexus') would be possible if you got it on launch day and if the E3D were to be released on the 10/11th/2nd week of June. Then why the huge media push to sell Nexus phones NOW? If Sprint is pushing the Nexus like crazy now (5/23) that means that people who buy it now have until 6/23 to decide if they want an E3D.

I'm not fully discounting it, because I'm sure there would be some launch day Nexus owners that would very quickly jump ship to the E3D, and it probably is a consideration. But I am still going to partially discount it. Why? Because let's say Sprint announces the phone Friday to be released on 6/10. Why don't the Nexus people dump their phones then and go back to their previous phones while they wait on the E3D? Or they could just wait until 6/6 to dump their phones and just have to wait 4 days for E3D.

More than likely, most people who got the Nexus are likely to be happy with the Nexus, unless they have technical problems. It's still shiny/new.

I like a previous poster's theory of Sprint having to wait XX amount of days between a phone releasing and a phone release date announcement. I'd actually like to put an addendum to that. It doesn't make any business sense to do that, anyways. While I don't think the E3D necessarily makes the Nexus obsolete, it certainly could be seen as counter-productive to release a phone and then immediately release something that could be seen as better immediately after it. Sprint invests money into the phone R/D. That'd be like throwing away money. So, instead of letting the Nexus be overshadowed by E3D, they're doing a media blitz to try to promote the underdog, then rolling out their heavy hitter in a sudden fury.

And maybe they're also taking a page out of Apple's playbook. No, not the play where you say the users are holding it wrong, but keeping hush-hush about it and then suddenly say...here it is!
