3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

All of this news of the Photon is not bolding well for the E3d.

All blog and techie sites are now talking about the Photon. If Sprint wants to get the attention back on the Evo 3D and sell this phone they better give a release date and more info.

Don't you think once they put the EVO 3D out on display, the phone will speak for itself?

I was just looking over the specs for the Moto Atrix and the Moto X2. According to the specs that I saw, Moto Atrix has 16gb internal storage and Moto X2 has 8gb of internal storage.

I wonder which the Photon will adopt from - Atrix or X2? To me, that is such music to my ears because I already have a 32gb microSD! The more rumors and info that come out about this Motorola phone, the less I care about the official EVO 3D release date.

Yeah but unfortunately Motorola is known for the same locked bootloaders that the Evo 3D has, and I don't think it will have 3D anyway.

Unfortunately, HTC locks are far worse than Moto locks. Moto devices can have custom ROMs and recoveries. Just can't tamper with the kernel. With HTC, you can't do squat. So even if Moto reneges on unlocked bootloaders and just keeps the status quo, the Photon will be more open than the E3D. Not completely open, but not dead-bolted shut, either.

Well HTC devices can have ROMs, kernels, whatever you want. This particular HTC device is totally locked down. We don't know what this Moto device will be like. We do know Moto has more of a history of locking down phones than HTC, so it could be locked down too.

Which realistically only matters to the people that root and use custom ROMs.

HTC's facebook page would beg to differ. There are tons of posts ( probably over 1000 since yesterday) from people saying they don't even know what a locked bootloader is but if HTC doesn't unlock it they won't get an HTC phone.

Lol. Did you count this? I guess those ppl will be losing out on a great phone.

Okay, lets say 6,000 people were upset. Well, its not 100,000 folks blowing up the Facebook page for HTC. And major media outlets are not carrying this story. HTC isn't going to change anything. If CNN, FOX, and MSNBC started to talk about people complaining about a locked bootloader would help your cause. Posting on Facebook and emailing execs will accomplish absolutely nothing.gl

1000?...Doesn't sound like a majority to me, even for Facebook. I think Sprint will sell A LOT more than 1,000 units, even with the locked bootloader. That's simply based on the popularity that the EVO 4G garnered.

You don't think HTC cares about 6000 people? Funny, HTC keeps tweeting that they are reconsidering that policy. Obviously they care.

So you think they only care about it if the majority of people threaten to leave? You're crazy. A few thousand of your best customers threatening to leave would make ANY company take notice. It doesn't matter if they have several thousand more customers or not. The fact of the matter is they want to keep as many customers as possible.

Maybe, but a lot of people walk in knowing what they want and don't bother to look at anything else, or simply order online. Sprint and HTC generated a lot of positive buzz about the Evo 3D when they announced it, and have proceeded to completely squander it with no official information for over 2 months. All they've managed to do is have a bunch of additional negative information come out, and have allowed many competetors to catch up, giving the customer who was in the 3D pause to look at other options.

Exactly.

I am a huge HTC fan and love my EVO. I pre ordered the 3D first day i could at the Shack. But we have heard nothing in a while and now today we are hearing about this killer Moto phone.

It has made me sit back and think about my options. And I am sure others have too now. Sprint wet peoples appetites with the E3d and then all of a sudden stopped. Now we have more people talking about this Moto phone then the Evo 3D.

Not good

What negative information other than yesterday's events? And who has caught up? All others did was to leak some info on a Moto phone, Samsung is not even announced for Sprint. All i see in the media is mention of this 3D phone coming this summer for Sprint. Only negative attitude is what goes on in these and other forums, majority of people are probably intrigued by a 3D phone. Maybe they are not.

And why is everyone exaggerating so much? And I am not trying to be rude to or attack you. I just don't understand why everyone who is dissappointed is making the assumption everyone else is also.

While it's true that the only negative info is on forums like this, it's also true that nobody outside of forums like this even knows about the phone yet. So you could say that the people who actually knew about the phone and were excited about it, have all been swamped with negative info the last couple days.

There are lots of people who don't follow the forums who know about the 3d. It was announced at ctia and was in the news for that, sprint has issued press releases and also is marketing it in the recent emails and nascar event and probably the most important way that people know about it is hearing people like us talk about it. I personally have told alot of people, 3 are for sure buying one, and not one even knows about the forums.

I have great respect for all of the work people do rooting and making ROMS, but in the end, the majority of people don't know what that is. Hell, i do and still haven't done it.

I want everything to be as open as the Nexus phones too, but I don't know if that will happen. The Evo 3D is going to be one of the best selling, most powerful and probably have one of the largest number of devs hacking away at it to make it everything you could want. Let's stop the negative attitude, and just enjoy how far we have come in the last year since the 4G. If you don't want the 3D now, fine, say your piece then move on and stop flooding every thread with the hate, there are some of us who are still happy.

(now can someone help me off this soapbox?)

There are very few people who follow CTIA and don't follow forums like this one. Anyone who knew about the Evo 3D because of CTIA, probably also read the news about the locked bootloader over the last couple days.

And the only news that said anything about the Evo 3D after CTIA, were the same sites reporting the locked bootloader. it's not like CNN did a one hour report about the Evo 3D after CTIA. No, it was on all the tech sites like Engadget and the likes, and all those same sites were reporting the locked bootloaders over the last couple days.

No matter how you slice it, the vast majority of the people who even know about the Evo 3D right now, also know about the locked bootloaders and all the negative news from the last couple days.

You think this will be one of the best selling devices of all time? Even Sprint doesn't think it will sell more than the OG Evo did, so you're probably wrong. And yeah, we can all start getting our excuses ready for why it won't sell more than the OG Evo. but you are the one who just claimed it willbe one of the best selling phones of all time, when it is not even expected to outsell the phone it is replacing.

You can be as happy as you want. But it doesn't mean we all have to stop posting our thoughts and feelings about this device. There was a pretty bug bombshell dropped about the locked down nature of this device. You may not care, but obviously a lot of others do. The HTC Facebook page has been getting lit up every since. I just checked their facebook page, and even at this time of night, the bottom comment on the page is only 20 minutes old, and the bottom comment 4 pages down is only 4 hours old- all talking about the same thing.

I would think the evo 3d will be out in June for sure, since the motorola photon4g is due in July, and the evo3d will be he flagship device, that was confirmed by sprint when I called...

I doubt Sprint is going to overlap any releases.

All the major releases will be given a period free of internal competition so Sprint avoids cannibalizing itself. Also, Sprint is really trying to forge strong partnerships with manufacturers. They aren't going to screw HTC by dumping the Photon the same week as the E3D or even the same month.

Expect the timeline of releases to look like so...

April: Kyocera Echo
May: Google Nexus
June: HTC Evo3D & Evo View
July: Motorola Photon, 4G XOOM
August: Samsung Within (GS2)

Mixed in there will probably be some smaller name releases for the budget crowd, and midrangers. A prime example being the Samsung Replenish, or the upcoming Samsung SPH-D600, and HTC kingdom.

This sums it up. Well stated Delta. Quoted for emphasis.

Hardcore techies and wannabe techies have an inflated sense of self worth.

I've been doing some training with another unit the last month. In my platoon everyone had an android phone and there was only one iPhone.

How many users had Google Voice other than me? Zero

How many had Google Talk other than me? Zero

Beyond texting, email, surfing and phone calls, there wasn't anything even remotely close to being concerned about rooting, boot loaders, or whatever some people on this forum regard as important. If I were to mention Froyo or Gingerbread they would think I was referring to chow.

That's the market. Anyone that thinks otherwise is flat out wrong. Prime example? The iPhone.

I almost caught a beat down in the Sprint Users forum for talking like you. I agree with everyone stating that a vast majority of HTC EVO 4G buyers do not know about rooting and custom ROMS. I also believe people on forums who are "tech nerds" do become full of themselves and think cell phone carriers and manufacturers revolve around their wants.

The comment about the EVO 3D becoming the best selling smartphone this year is slightly questionable. However, I didn't want to upgrade my EVO 4G to an EVO 3D at first, but I can't stop myself. Once word gets spread around about the EVO 3D I think the phone isn't going to be able to stay on the shelves. And individuals looking to switch from iPhone will give the EVO 3D second and third looks due to the late release of the iPhone 4S.

Someone from another forum said there was 3 million EVO 4Gs sold. Don't know if that's true or not. But BlackDynamite you must account for the fact that the EVO 3D will be sold in Europe and Japan so the EVO 3D could outsell the EVO 4G.
