3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

I really hope they didn't delay the phone because they want the bootloader to be unlocked in the box. All they would have to say is that there will be an OTA within a week of release that will unlock it. While some people will be moody about that, most of us reasonable modders wouldn't care.

And stooge was just trying to be a little funny, really, how often does anyone come across that word anymore?!?!

:p:)

Being a Moe, Larry, Curly fan, I was wondering about the intent - it's too hard to subscript tone of voice - and how it would be perceived. I just just picture Moe saying to Sprint "Knock it off you lame-brains and publish a release date!" You'd then hear a bunch of "a-whoo-whoo-whoo's" :D

I agree just release the phone already let it be locked and unlocked later. I don't root but still for those who do I am sure you wouldn't mind waiting a few weeks just to get the phone now. Heck were stuck waiting till the 24th anyway. But I am off work today and can't stay away from my computer. I keep getting forum comments and am reading twitter post and am wishing a release date would be announced. But I heard the new Sprint Playbook won't be out till tomorrow.

I do not understand the viewing angle argument for cell phones.

Big screen TVs? Yes. Cell phones and other individual use devices (like gameboys, PDAs, etc)? No.

There are a few cases where it's useful. For example, many handheld games use gyroscopic control, and so inherently require movement of the cell phone. Even just holding it in a manner more ergonomically sound for typing with your thumbs may put the phone at a suboptimal viewing angle. Also, note that monitors and TVs are (usually) left in one orientation, which makes a worse panel more tolerable because they construct them in a way to maximize the useful range of viewing angles to the ones most likely to be used -- they're not symmetric in viewing angles horizontally vs vertically, for example. But phones are used in both landscape and portrait, and so in some orientations even a small angle offset can produce a big reduction in screen quality if you don't have one of the better displays.

EarlyMon's point is probably the best, though -- that viewing angle is a hint as to screen type and thus quality, not that the angle itself is important.

Well I believe it now so I am not getting my hopes up for any earlier.

Well, isn't that special :(. tho not necessarily in contradiction with what the Sprint store manager told me, either (Father's Day release VERY close). I'm unfamiliar with this site, though. Is it fairly reputable with its info? Thx

^This. If anyone's still unhappy, take up in PM or with me - no need for hard feelings here.

Remember - in text, no one can hear your face. ;)

Ok, that's just my laugh of the day, right there! :D

I'm not sure why a lot of people thought it would come the first week in June. The fact that Sprint didn't say the date led me to believe it would probably be closer to July or mid June at the earliest before this was released. Add to the fact that you can cash in on the movie tie ins from a marketing perspective and it pretty much solidified for me that it just wasn't going to happen so quickly.

Sounds pretty solid to me. It would also make sense for a Fathers Day release date. I may just go make that pre order now considering all of the new information popping up all over the place... although a solid confirmation wouldnt hurt either :)

If you want to know why people thought it would be earlier, I'm pretty sure you could look through the previous 17 pages and find quite a few posts that have very good logic behind it.

Also, the movie tie in of the Green Hornet couldn't be any type of hint at the date because that movie has been out for awhile (since 5/3) on DVD now.

I don't know, I'm the oppposite. I think it's a bad move to not have it out BY Father's Day, and just don't think that they'd go ahead and release on Father's Day itself. Guess we'll see, but I read this as a June 24th or later release (assuming all of this information is true).

Agreed, even if you only took the Evo launch last year (which as also a "Summer" release according to Sprint), and then looked at big device launches previous years, everything appeared to line up as this coming weekend.

Sure, nothing was set in stone, but it made far more logical sense than some of the other theories out there on other random dates (especially for the time).

I noticed the Motorola XPRT was listed for June 4th training, but it comes out June 5th. If last week was the 4th week of training, I don't see why there can't be a June 17th release, which is right before Father's Day, and have the final training session the next day. I'm sure with all those weeks of training, there won't be a problem trying to sell phone or help with user's problems.

I think the real loot rolls in after Father's Day.

I've always been happy with a home-cooked breakfast and annual reenactment of The Promising Dad That This Is Truly The Year That Others (Read: Those Responsible) Will Clean Out The Garage And Return The Missing Tools Not Like Last Year When Something Came Up Ceremony.

A 3vo on father's day? Ummm... can I come to your houses?

I agree 100%! Sprint's missing a BIG opportunity. :( but better 24 June than 24 July, fer shure! :D

Thats true. For some reason I thought Fathers Day was the 26th, not the 19th. In either case, if its release is within June then Ill be just peachy.

And I would agree, the 24th is a probable date in my book. Especially considering the push Sprint is making with their marketing recently.

Excellent point! Or am I just saying that because your prediction brings the beast 1 week closer? Arrrgggggghhhh!

That'd be cool, but from everything I've seen, it's just not how Sprint rolls (releasing before completing training). I would assume that you'd be getting a lot more questions a lot more quickly on release day, because you're going to have high traffic coming in to check out/pick it up, and if you don't have training til the next day, you could come off as looking very amateurish and uninformed on your own products (you in all these cases being Sprint or the employee of Sprint).

A Sprint Rep said that Father's Day was very close to the release date. He clearly knew the date.

Oh and did Sprint sell the Evo exclusively last year for a week (no BB or RS release till a week later)? If they did, then it all makes perfect sense. a BB rep said that the Evo 3D was coming out on the 24th for them. If Sprint got it on the 17th, they would get the FD weekend sales, and sell to people before they go on trips. (I have one on the 19th)

I know but if they do release on the 17th, they would have had 7 weeks of training already. I see your point that the last training day might have teach them a little more than they would already know at that point, but IMO it's not a big deal.

They all started selling it on the same day last year
