3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

I was at the Coca - Cola 600 this weekend and saw one very vague commercial for the Evo 3d. Also while I was down in pit row I looked for Sprint employees..saw a few but they didn't have any Evo 3d's. They all looked busy so I didn't bother them to ask about a release date.

not sure if you noticed, but there was a giant ad (evo 3d saying "coming soon") on top of kevin harvick's car when he was in victory lane. For the longest time, the evo 4g had been the one advertised in victory lane, so this caught my attention right off the bat. To me, it's another good sign that it really is coming soon.

Yeah I saw that. I did not like reading the careful terminology that we can share USER-GENERATED video via DLNA and HDMI. I was hoping they would let us stream HTC Watch videos, etc. Maybe they will but again that terminology says otherwise to me.

Good catch.

DLNA isn't going to stream DRM protected content by design, so that's no surprise (and if you get around it, it won't play on any DLNA-enabled TVs).

DLNA doesn't broadcast movies or music or pictures - it simply serves files like having a network drive on your PC - pretty much the exact same thing for media files. If something is streaming in to the Evo 3D, that's not a fixed file, DLNA won't serve it out to TVs.

We'll have to see how they roll on HDMI. If they left HDCP out of the HDMI circuit, that'll limit playback of protected content as well. How anyone would leave HDCP out of HDMI escapes me tho, not sure how that works.

I don't understand the PR. Why can't they say the release date? I emailed them, probably won't hear back but still worth a shot.. this is leading me to believe they dont have a firm release date yet.

yeah, the "this summer' statement is very frustrating. Despite what the calendar indicates, summer kicks off memorial day weekend. So, I'm still holding onto that, lol. But realistically I think they would have announced it by now if it were in next week.

To be fair to Sprint, their target audience with these emails and teases is not us, the people who know every single detail ever since March.

For the phones I don't follow or care about, those emails actually open my eyes about what's upcoming. Usually those emails get me googling for more information.

So I suspect a lot of people out there have never heard of the Evo 3D until they get the email from Sprint, and then they find sites like these to see if it's worth considering.

I do not understand the viewing angle argument for cell phones.

Big screen TVs? Yes. Cell phones and other individual use devices (like gameboys, PDAs, etc)? No.

Seriously, how often do you have 3 people crammed together to watch something on a 4.3" screen? And is the screen's poor view angles the top complaint? I don't know about others, but if my friends and I are watching/reading something on smartphones, everyone probably got an individual copy of it in their email, anyhow. If they don't have their own smartphone, they usually just wait until someone offers to let them see it on their device by handing it to them for individual viewing.

That would be a bummer if streaming is verboten. Not necessarily a deal breaker for me, mind you, but certainly a disappointment. I even saw a video for another high-end phone (sorry memory fails again, so no link) that will have an HDMI cable IN the box, specifically for that purpose.

From Sprint Newsroom | Exciting Content Coming for this Summer?s Highly Anticipated Smartphone, HTC EVO 3D Exclusively from Sprint

Its integrated DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) capability also makes it fast and easy to share stored music, pictures and user-generated HD video wirelessly with other DLNA-certified home electronics, including HDTVs, monitors, digital cameras and printers. Using an HDMI cable (sold separately) makes it possible to also share user-created 3D video content via a 3D TV.

Now I wonder (and hope) the doc is just defning limits of DLNA, since that seems to be the main focus of the paragraph than streaming. Could you stream movies with stock EVO4G? If you could, and they're not making any effort to stop it, I don't see any reason why they'd disable this feature. But I'm not an SME in any of this, so I could be totally off base. :o

I know you say this in jest; but several of the reviews for the sensation suggest it is tn and not ips/p-va from the very weak view angles. The droid x2 is suppose to have a rather decent lcd. I should check out the devices at a few of the stores. I know the original evo multi-vendor the lcd and some were distinctly better than others. a TN panel by nature does not imply horrible reproduction. The one on the acer iconia is rather decent (not sure if it is tn of p-va). The iphone 4 display is very good (ignoring the resolution) and from a marketing perspective apple (and samsung) are correct that the very first thing you use on these devices is the display.

I said it in jest, but I'll bet that's how they'll roll. :D

I've nothing against the iP4 display - it is very good - I just object to the FUD marketing over the resolution. But in the hand, no real complaints.

MVA and PVA don't offer the viewing angles of IPS in my experience. I suppose anything's possible, but I can't imagine them offering TN on a media-savvy device - TN is just a raging dog at response times and - well, everything else. Also note SLCD also make less-capable PVA panels in addition to their top models. No idea if the Sensation display is from SLCD or Sharp or NovaTech or Epson or...

I'm not aware of Sharp (the Evo 3D's purported panel supplier, per the CTIA vid) producing anything but AVS displays.

For those unfamiliar with the alphabet soup monikers for LCD tech:

TFT LCD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not entirely up to date, but a good overview there.

I do not understand the viewing angle argument for cell phones.

I agree with your POV on this, but in this case, I was reading that only as a hint of the LCD tech type. It's not like they come out and tell us, so people use various metrics like that to guess what's delivered.

Hmm I could be wrong here but I thought this DRM was a problem of the past because the Alliance has identified that digital content needs to be protected so they created DLNA Link Protection which protects the streaming content while on the Home Network and prevents the media from being copied. This was all to address the problem of developing DRM interoperability. Now I know in practice that this is hit and miss on what content can stream to what device and it gets pretty complicated.

Update: Here are two links. One to a press release and one to a white paper. http://www.dlna.org/about_us/roadmap/DLNA_Whitepaper.pdf

Yes, I stand corrected on that detail - I own a bunch of DLNA stuff, don't own any with Link Protection. I'd be surprised if they even attempted it on the phone, tho - think of the support nightmares if some worked and some didn't, imo only.

It also depends as to whether protected content will be actually stored on the phone or not. If it's streaming only, it's not to going to simultaneously stream to TVs at the same time. This was a false expectation set based on a rumor, imo - and that's one of the points I'm stressing here.

PS - those interesting in trying out DLNA that don't already have it on their phones - iMediaShare, free in the Market. ;)

Oh I agree. A complete nightmare if it only worked on a handful of DLNA devices.

Well me and my friend both listed on Craigs List he is suppose to sell his this Friday he made a deal a week ago. We did this before we started reading all the 24th stuff and we really thought it was going to be this Friday. I got offered 250 for phone and accessories and told guy I was wiping it clean and deactivating it and he said ok and then was a no show. It was already wiped clean and Sprint said they were giving 150 if I hurried and brought it cause price was going down since 3D would be out soon.

I called Sprint 1-888 number and she said her computer showed it went down to 135 and I was offered a 100 dollar one time credit to resign and Sprint store was still offering me 150 so I got my 250 and didn't know at the time that there was going to be this 3 week delay. I though this Craigs List guy was buying my phone so I already had wiped it and activated my Purple Lotus. I have an Archos Android tablet so I figured I could be without phone for a week or so not knowing it was going to be the 24th now. I can still play my scrabble games and do Netflix and stuff on my tablet so I guess I'm good.

Just curious why youu would do that?

I got it and it just says coming soon! :-( When I don't want to wait till the 24th..

Anyone receive this email this morning?

Is it me or is Sprint really amping up the promo for the EVO 3D within the last week or so?

I like. :)

PR person emailed back very quickly with this..

Hi! Sorry, we have not announced the official availability date. It will launch this summer.

a bunch of bad luck...

Oh well I'm ok with it but if he sells his phone this Friday and has to use an older phone for more than a week he won't like it. I at least have my Archos Android tablet. I just hate being out and I am so use to speaking everything and I can't on my Lotus. LOL! But it willbe worth it once the 3D is out. I already have a Sprint gift card and have one on reserve. I got an email today about the new Motorola Photon 4G and it said this

According with our friends from AndroidCentral, the new EVO 3D will come to Sprint the fourth week of June. Nothing yet is official but rumors about those days are circulating on the net. Also, RadioShack is planing to release the Evo 3D this June 4th. ( I think they typoed and meant the 24th)

a bunch of bad luck...

Hi! Sorry, we have not announced the official availability date. It will launch this summer.

Stooge, remove your name and her email address! Don't leave that out for public consumption!

Temp hit 95 yesterday and my Pre's screen baked like an old screen protector while at the pool. I need a EVO 3D stat!

I feel your pain, Miggest. I'm limping along with a Pre, too, and we've already pushed triple digits a couple of times in SoCenTX. Getting to the point where I have a hard time answering the stupid phone, so I'm about to go to a Curve 8330 until my pre-ordered beast comes in. I work from home, mostly, but travel some, too. Gotta have something reliable, if only to answer calls.

Ya know? I haven't thought about it that way... Maybe something to that. We've seen a LOT of "no updates" updates lately... I'm wondering now if they had stock ready to go until the bootloader issue was resolved, then brought it back to keep people happy and not have to rely on an OTA to unlock it???? Well, at least it sounds good, anyway, doesn't it?!?! :D

first of all don't call me a stooge.. 2nd i could carelss if you know my name
3rd. her name and email is the contact info on the Sprintpress release.. so its not like i'm publishing personal stuff out there.

Didn't know that was on the press release. She's probably getting bombarded...

And I'd figured you'd made a braindead, first day back to work after a long weekend, mistake like I have a habit of doing. I've actually just cut and pasted into boards with all the personal info and freaked out before. And stooge was just trying to be a little funny, really, how often does anyone come across that word anymore?!?!

:p:)

So do you think the delay on releasing the phone was because of the bootloader being locked then unlocked and now if they can OTA unlock it they will release it earlier than the 24th cause it's already stocked in places? The Sprint warehouse in here where I live wish I could find out LOL!

I have nothing more substantial than any of the other 1000's of posts with speculation to the whats, wheres and whys. I try to come up with reasons for the delays that don't indicate any sort of operational issue with the phone. I already have a piece-o-junk phone (Pre), and I'd rather not blow money on another. And as I said, it sounds good :), and soothes my fears. Kinda like visiting these forums every three minutes to find just ONE more clue... :D

I went to pre-order my EVO 3D yesterday and the employee that helped me speculated (and he made it clear that it was speculation) that it's likely to be released on the 24th. Based on how they time release dates with the promotion of their flagship phones (Instinct in 08, Pre in 09, EVO 4G last year), that would be the logical time of it's release.

He said it could be sooner, but based on precedence, it's likely to be out around that time. Again, he stressed that he didn't know it for a fact, so grain of salt, and all the jazz.

Did he provide the precedent that this was based on? I have repeatedly searched and studied previous releases to see if I could find a trend that would give me a definite date time frame. Only trend I have found is that they are almost always released in June. What trend was he referring to that led him to believe it would be June 24th? Was it a certain advertisement somewhere or just the amount of advertisement?
