3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

From what I've seen in the hands-on videos, the switch does have to be on to view the images/videos in 3D. Otherwise they are shown in 2D. And I observed that even with the 3D switch on, when you first load a 3D picture, it appears as 2D for a brief second, and then the 3D kicks in.

Hmmmm - my memory from the CTIA 26 minute vid is that the switch is for the camera only, and that delay you saw was the normal auto-switching to 3D.

Figure I would throw this out there too.

WHow knows who these people are. Just following the Evo 3d on Twitter

Sprint will announce release date on Monday June 6th

Captain EVO

All i can say is that if it does comes out June 24 it will be a good day . New phone and will see Cars 2 LOL .. Either way I want to hear a release date to calm down .. :/

Oh, and for those wondering whether 3D games would be more, it was confirmed on the Sprint press release that Gameloft would be offering both 2D and 3D games for 5 bucks, the previous price.

damn. had I known, i'd have just recommended you guys the regular ol' Evo. I can't even comprehend the amount of jaw droppage on your faces when you guys get the 3vo.

Timing and ignorance... I got my Hero last May for $50. Had I known about Android and smartphones, I would have waited until Evo was released. And I'm one of those people that has 10 years under my belt with Sprint. I only used phones for calls, then the occasional text, before the Hero. Then realized how underpowered it was after 6 months of trying to manage it... New convenience to me. Odd, cause I am an app developer, web based, and I got a kick out of SMS and WAP for years, but never took it seriously. Developing for phones was a side hobby...

I don't think the delay I'm describing was from the 26min Hannah video. It was a guy demoing. I'll see if I can find it.

-edit-
found it. it was Engadget's hands-on at CTIA:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28-kKIo5uIU

A 2:16, it shows the 3D kicking in after a delay
At 2:54, he says that the switch only controls capture (cameras), so I stand corrected there.

So looks like 3D photos and videos will always show in 3D; no way to display them in 2D without some conversion first (I'm assuming conversion will be possible).

You don't have to have the switch on to view content. If it's a 3D picture, it'll show as 2D, then pop in as 3D

Well T-Mo users just got their confirmation on the Sensation, I hope Sprint follows through soon as well. This is getting interesting :)

Almost exactly the same for me... Bought the Hero in March due to BB having it for "only" $80. Got rid of my Instinct for this uber customizable super phone. Few months later the Evo comes out. Couple months later my buddy gets one. Yeah, the phone *I* told him was so cool. He jumped carriers to get.
I'm stoked to get the EVO 3D. The Hero's got to go!

There is probably a setting within the gallery app for options.
at least i hope there is :)

I doubt I will be taking too many 3d pics unless they are just that cool.
Videos however do sound interesting but would like to be able to convert to 2d if necessary.

We're pretty similar then. Though I was luckier. Been with Sprint since '99. Always got the really simple dialpad-only phones. Until 2007 when my work required me to get a Blackberry. That was definitely a smart phone compared to my old flips. But then when that phone became obsolete, I just picked the best smartphone I saw in the Sprint store, the Evo. Yup, no thought or pre-planning. And it happened to be 3 days after launch. Had no clue; in fact I was angry why Sprint wouldn't stock their best phone and I had to be added to a wait list.

I develop webapps as well. J2EE,SQL, and all the front end stuff (HTML, CSS, JS/JQuery/Ajax).

Now that I'm addicted to Android, I've broken from my old conventions:

1) use each phone for at least 3 years
2) keep it simple; don't need any bells and whistles

Good thing is I still don't get bogged down with the specs. It makes the decision-making process too hard. Take a good, overall look at a phone's specs, and that's it.

Ok well the Good And Evo site got a hold of the playbook and it says training for EVO 3D June 18th. So I am betting it's not gonna be out on the 17th. Now the 19th if they can get trained in a day but I am betting it is the 24th. And I am wondering if HTC and the locking and unlocking of the bootloader had anything to do with the 3 week delay.

I am just upset cause I no longer have my EVO thinking the 3D would come out this Friday. My upgrade is due tomorrow and I was wondering if I could buy an EVO and then return it within 30 days. I don't care about a restocking fee I just hate using my Lotus. I would like to get an EVO and just not put anything on it. Use it for web surfing email and texting. I am so used to speaking to dial a business or to text and email. Does the EVOS in the stores now have GB? I do have an Android tablet so I have my scrabble games and more so I guess I can wait and use my Lotus for 3 weeks but it's bugging me..

If there's an easy way to convert to 2D, I'd probably just shoot in 3D all the time. I know that when you share to a site that only supports 2D, a conversion happens. Which is why I think it'll be trivial to convert on demand as well.

There are already PC apps to convert 3d pics to 2d by just pulling out one of the two images for that picture.

If the 3vo doesn't include that, no doubt some app will quickly come along for it.

So maybe they can get trained in one day since there familiar with the EVO already. So it would be awesome if the 19th was the date and not the 24th. And someone said predicted on Twitter that Sprint was announcing in on June 6th but who knows. I'm just afraid if I rebought an EVO and the 3D got delayed and it was over 30 days I'd be screwed. I may go into the Sprint store tomorrow since that playbook comes out and see if anyone can tell me anything. I want my EVO back but Sprints 1-888 number said I can't have it back there's already a 150 credit on my account.

I believe I saw somewhere that the 3D pics are also saved in a 2d version, but I don't remember which youtube clip I saw that mentioned on

Yes indeed. While many of us had planned on 3d being out perhaps the first week of June, as time rolled on we came to the realization that while the sensation was expected in the beginning of the month, the 3d would in fact be at the end of it. Now, after today's news I believe that they will release close to each other once again. The sensation's release is a little later than most were expecting, so the 3d might actually be around the same time after all.

Perhaps it will drop a week after the 15th, when the sensation hits. Im hoping so!

If HTC is going to release the same phone on all 4 carriers it is either nexus3 (too early) or a wp7 superphone we know nothing about yet (highly unlikely).

probably an iphone or blackberry. what do bb regionals know about phones?

I sincerely hope that Sprint doesn't wait until the 6th to announce the date. I guess it would be fitting to add to the comedy of errors that has been the Evo 3D marketing campaign (or lack thereof), but if they wait til the beginning of WWDC, we'll be happy to hear it, but it'll be a footnote or less in any mainstream news, and will get just a quick blurb on any blog that isn't exclusively Android.

Just seems like a terrible move.

It is almost certainly the Nexus 3. I think BGR even posyed about the NExus 3. I remember seeing a picture of it (no buttons, all screen) but can't remember where I read it.

I'm pretty sure it isn't hitting Sprint in September though. I think it's more like a December target date.

Yeah, far more likely December than September, but unless Google has made the deal already and it just hasn't been announced, no one knows that HTC will be making the next Nexus, could be anyone.

The picture, if what I read recently is true, was debunked as being a fake. still, I'm not sure that it isn't a relatively decent idea of where Android handsets could be going, ditching capacitive buttons for the software buttons in Ice Cream Sandwich, and maximizing face space for screen area.

If I remember correctly, the E3D stores images as .JPS files, which is just a .JPG with a different extension. If your standard pic viewer doesn't recognize .JPS, rename it to .JPG. Then it will open. It's basically just the left and right images side-by-side in one image.

So worst case, I can batch split them via a custom photoshop rule. But yeah, I'm pretty confident there will be a tool/app to do this for us.
