Optimize your Droid Eris battery life (READ THIS)

How? I use my phone moderately. A few pics here and there. A browse to a web page or two, SMS, maybe a phone call or two, and GTalk. I'm down to 30 by the end of the day

idk really, just check every now and then to make sure i dont have killer apps with spare parts, calibrate the meter and battery a few times, works fine.

I let my battery run down to nothing two nights in a row and now I still have 70% or so left. Normally I'd already be at around 30% or 40%. I'm actually using it more too. I watch for the nasty apps in the background like the camera or the browser. My awake time is usually around 12%. My usage today was SMS, GTalk, MMS, browsing, a few pictures, and some MP3s.

I have went to Settings>Location>Location setting turned off and it has done wonders so far. still at 23% and I could have sworn the battery widget actually went up to 24% :O.

Up time is how long it's been since your last reboot.

A low % for awake time isn't bad. It means your phone hasn't been working very much. In other words, it's been in sleep mode. A high awake time would result if you use it constantly or an app is keeping it from going to sleep. The percent is calculated based on your awake time and up time.

My uptime is currently 40:36:15
My awake time is 4:32:05 (11% of my total up time)
So, for me, my phone has been sleeping 89% of the time since I last rebooted it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the clarification.

I've also been using advance task killer free and it seems to help my batt life a lot. it kills any apps you've been running, including itself, hence no apps running in the background (correct me if i'm wrong).

First time smartphone user here. Will be getting the Eris sometime this week. This thread has helped me quite a bit on what I should expect from the battery life. Will do a lot of the tips provided when I get the phone.

Thanks guys!

after installing handcent

go to your people app, pick a person, touch send message (txt) and it will ask to use stock app or handcent. touch use as default and touch handcent.

I have done this so now handcent is my default sms. However, when I get new messages I still get notifications from both handcent and the stock app. I tried a force stop but it didnt seem to work.

Is there anyway to comepletely remove the stock app? Is there a risk in doing that and will I cut any battery time by removing the app completely?

Go into your settings on the stock sms app and remove the notification settings. That is how I got mine to work.

either

a) you have a malfunctioning battery

b) you have a malfunctioning phone

c) you have an app or apps that are killing it.

Sorry to be thick, but how do I get to there? I went to settings>manage apps, but I cannot turn off notifications.

Also, does anyone know what the force stop is? I chose this for stock app but I dont know that it did anything.

go into your messages app, then hit menu, then settings, then turn off notifications

no need to force stop, once notifications are off you should be good to go.

I've tried what you gave been suggesting and while my battery is going up I still need to charge every night. While I expect this I'm still trying to figure out how you get two days. Yesterday I went down to 30% before I put it back on the charger. The only thing different was more phone calls. Only about 45 minutes worth though... no streaming or anything like that either.

some days i use my phone pretty lightly...like a light day could be

10 minutes or less on phone

15 or 20 minutes web surfing

5-10 text messages

5 or so emails...

the rest of the time it is asleep

Well how can I prove b? I'm already passed the 30 day trial. When is Seido releasing a higher capacity battery that fits perfect? What type of apps are known to kill it?

I love my eris. It is my first smartphone. I have had it for 9 days---my only complaint is the battery. With very little use--5 or less texts, 1 or 2 less than 2 minute calls, checking fb & email for less than 10 minutes total, and maybe 5 minutes of game playing(teeter and jewels), I get about 10 hours out of the battery. I have gps off. I also downloaded cardiotrainer, and used that for a 30 minute walk yesterday(gps on only during walk)--battery lasted about an hour less yesterday. My worry--what if I really need to use it?? I haven't been away from the house much since getting it, so haven't really "used" it much yet. If I go on a shopping trip or something that takes me away from the house the majority of the day, I use a cell phone ALOT--like several hours talking. Had a motorola razor before--have always went 2 or 3 days before having to charge, regardless of how much talk time.(Please don't be like hubby and say I can go back to it!!!)
OH, I do have a VERY weak signal(why I am posting here since it is mentioned)--usually one or 2 bars, hardly ever has more than 3 bars---very often switches from 3G to 1X--have no choice in that matter--it is our area--coverage supposed to be improved by end of year(live in N central TX).
SO, should I order the 1750 mAH battery?? Will that make it last 12 + hours with moderate phone usage--still only turning internet based apps on as needed(not leaving them running)?
I am confused--I LOVE it, but got it to USE the internet--if I can't use it(as is or with 1750 battery), is it worth it?? Would I have the same problem with the Moto Droid??
THANKS in advance!!
Donna
