how do you shut off the native sms after installing handcent?
I too had my Eris swapped (due to an issue with the mic). This time I've noticed a huge difference in the battery life. I have Mobile Network on all the time, google auto sync on, location AND GPS on and with moderate use(text, a few short calls, browsing the market and the web, taking pics) I get a day and a half with NO task killer programs installed. I use the back button to exit all apps and my phone has been a dream.
Exiting a program with the back button doesn't close them. AFAIK the only way to completely close and get a program out of memory is to force close or reboot.
not a proven fact..I've been running my phone without any task killers and the battery is doing just as well.

same here. as a matter of fact, I think my battery is lasting longer WITHOUT the task killer. I used ATK.
Um...where is it a proven fact and where did I say anything about using back button?IT IS A PROVEN FACT. I never disputed your claim that a task killer app would compromise battery life. I disputed your claim that hitting the back button exits a program and saves battery power over exiting otherwise. Unless you're rebooting, doing a force close in 'Manage Applications' or using a task killer app to force close your apps for you your programs will remain running in the background.

jreed2560 asserted using the back button closes an app and saves battery. You quoted me and replied 'not a proven fact...' even though I wasn't denying a task killer could hurt battery life more than it helps.
okay, where is it proven then?
I think the jury is still out on the battery impact of task managers. I don't imagine they would do any harm aside from running in the background and taking up memory as long as they don't interfere with the Eris going to sleep.
I don't know if they really help with battery life much either. As long as you have no apps that are preventing your phone from going into sleep mode task killers are only going to free up memory. For me that's enough reason to use them because of the performance benefit. It's logical to believe that whether you can enter sleep mode properly or not the more apps that are running the more battery you consume. How much is the question.
One thing is for certain, Android should have a better leash on the apps that are allowed to remain in memory. Requiring someone to reboot regularly to free up memory in this day and age is silly.
dancing around the question is not an answer.
I do not use task killers, and my phone is not lagging, slowing down, or freezing on me.
I do not use task killers, and my batter is not worse or better. Its just fine. I can go full day with more than medium usage. Yes, for some that is not enough, but i dont mind charging my phone every night. If i really need to save some battery, i just turn mobile off.
I'm not dancing. I just don't care enough to look into it further right now.
I think you'd be surprised if you knew what programs were hanging around your OS eating up free memory. I know how my free memory is reduced and performance is degrading by letting them run wild. Do you know what you're missing by ignoring it?
This is getting OT. I'm sure there's a thread discussing the merits of task manager type apps around here somewhere.
i've been reading quite a bit about Android OS, and know some stuff about Linux. That is why i am asking you to show me a proof of what you're saying.
