Optimize your Droid Eris battery life (READ THIS)

Hi everyone,

I have been reading a lot about HTC ERIS because I am getting mine tomorrow:) As far as I see, battery is the major downside for ERIS. So, I have been searching a lot even before I get the phone. Some people mentioned here about seidioonline.com

Recently, they announced extended batteries for ERIS -
one of them is 3500mAh...and they say it is the same size as the stock battery.
It is still not on sale but probably coming soon.

Now my question is do you think it will increase the battery life almost 2.5 to 3 times?

Wouldn't be awesome:) I am sooo excited about my ERIS and it will be my first smart phone. I hope it will be a nice experience.

Stock battery is 1300mAh so upping battery capacity to 3500mAh is an increase of roughly 250%...I'd say you should see at least a doubling of battery life, really will depend on what features you are using and for how long.

A small correction - 3500mAh battery which is coming out soon adds 3-4 mm to the phone - which makes more sense I guess:)

They have another one with 1750mAh which is same size as the stock battery but I don't know how much it helps to go from 1300 to 1750 mAh. And does it worth ~$50?

Got my phone 2 days ago. Battery life was surprisingly good. I fully charged it and took it off the charger at 2am. It died 24 hours later, after periods of heavy usage and rest times. Had it on my all day, 3g/wifi on. auto brightness. push notifications. made a couple calls.

Guess I won't need that new battery after all! I probably could get two days out of one charge once the battery gets more calibrated.

Mobile network and "Always On Mobile" are two DIFFERENT things!!! I have the "Always on Mobile" off, and I get calls, texts, emails etc. It's located under Settings > Wireless Controls > MOBILE NETWORK SETTINGS > "Enable always-on mobile"

Please don't confuse those 2 ;)

Please explain the difference.

The way I understand it is if you have it unchecked, then your network-based apps won't update when your phone is in sleep mode. Once you wake up your phone, everything will update (example - Facebook widget, weather channel, etc..)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Gmail will still push if your phone is in sleep mode and mobile network always on is unchecked.

Edit: I just tested my phone and I still receive Gmail if this is not checked. Now, let's see if my battery life improves!

i get 50% more battery with it UNchecked.

It still gives you Gmail, yes, but it's not push. It checks for new mail every hour or 3 or whatever it's set at. It's not push.

Thanks for the tips and tricks that you guys have posted on here. They have been very helpful. My battery life has been annoying the hell out of me ever since I got the Eris.
I was just out a few hours ago. My battery life was at 50%. I had my mobile network and navigation turned off. I don't get wifi too good where I am. So, I have to use the 3g. Two and half hours later, battery life went down to 49%. When I got home, I turned on mobile network and my battery life started dropping a little.. down to 46% I think.
After a few more charges and be careful with the network controls, my battery life should improve greatly.

Wow, these tips helped me a lot, thanks.
After using them I usually get about 8%-25% Wake Time.
I don't know if anyone said this yet but,I suggest getting a free app called Spare Parts.
It helps, and gives you info on what apps are draining your battery.

spare parts-battery history-change cpu usage to partial wage usage
This'll tell you the apps that are using the battery the most from Greatest to Least.
My culprit was Meebo IM but now I use Advanced Task Killer to manage it.

Thanks a lot!

The 3500 mAh battery will NOT be the same size and will include a different back cover...the 1750 mAh will be the same size as original battery.

One thing I've noticed with texting is that you have to give your phone time to switch back to 3g before putting it into sleep mode. If you send a text and you put it into sleep quickly, your phone will stay in 1x until you wake it up. I don't know if this is a battery drain or not, but it's worth noting.

does having background data check drain battery also auto sync for google mail, calendar, and contacts.
Yes. One of the biggest drainers of the battery. I keep mine on and I get a good 15-18 hours from one charge. God knows how much I'd get if I actually turned this stuff off.. but I need it on.

I have spent the last few days browsing this forum, and had a few questions. There is a lot of speculation to what specific options that "save battery life" actually do, and I have seen multiple descriptions for these. Such as Background Data (On/Off), Mobile Always On (On/Off), etc. Has anyone actually gotten any info from HTC on what these options do? I downloaded the user guide from the website, and it tells you how to get to these settings to modify them, but does not describe what they actually control. I have read that the Background Data option will save a lot of battery if turned off, but what if Mobile Network is disabled? I don't find it that big of a deal to turn the mobile network off when I am done using the phone, adding a widget to control that to the home screen makes it rather painless. If mobile network is off, do any of the above mentioned options or auto sync options even matter? I have also read that turning off Background Data causes a lot of issues with different apps. I was going to call HTC tech support, but I think we as a group can probably figure out more than they can tells us based on what I have read in different forums about their (and verizon's) tech support.

Hi everyone. I remember reading somewhere in this thread or another thread that you can tweak the settings of wifi to only turn on when a remembered wifi network is in range. Is this possible? I can't remember sorry.

so i have the droid eris and when I first got it it was working great the 3g was even better. but for some reason after a while it would not get 3g and my dads droid by Motorola would. so far I'm on my 3rd phone and i haven't had the problem i get 3g where my dad dose. the only thing that i did different is that i didn't download the latest update and I'm kind of scared to download it again. what should i do and do think that the update is the reason why ii wasn't able to get 3g in my house.

thanks

the update was supposed to address that issue and a few others but from what many have seen it actually made things worse. if i were in your shoes, i would not update and wait till the january update.

well i just got my eris yeterday, and at first i was so in love, then i became unhappy cause i wasnt used to it, now im finding my way around it, and its just awesome. now this is my first android phone, and coming from the iphone, let me just say, the battery on the eris, is better than the iphone in a way, ive had it on an off listening to pandora since 9:30am, and its 2:25 and the battery is on 67%, and i was also checking mail, sending sms and mms, taking pictures as well. so i know that if i did all that on my iphone, it would prob kill the battery faster, cause you cant listen to pandora and reply to a txt on a stock iphone, unless you have bitesms and quick reply enabled. so that means opening the screen and sending the message, and restarting pandora, thats just one example.

Just my doing a little research, using handscent and diabling the stock sms can help battery, this is some of the stuff i did:

Just in handscent alone, tell it to: not light the track ball on new msg, let the led tell you have a sms, disable the pop up, making it turn on the screen, set the reminder to two alerts so you dont forget, make the screen off in 20 sec, there are so many options you can use, just those alone with a better battery and the 2.0 update should make this phone way better, the only thing i wish i knew how to do or wish this had, was if im in handscent sms, can i push a button twice to launch my music player, cause when i turn my screen on while im listening i wanna be able to either pause, skip, or rewind the song.

so with all that set in mind, my awake time is still high, but i cant get it to 20% sleep time like others, maybe that would help me as well.

and btw, why does the stock email take so long to bring me my mail, i cant wait til 2.0 the gmail app will let me do two or three gmails in one, i have my main one,and one i use for my contacts and such. let me know what you think, how you got extended battery life, or anything i mentioned helped.

my email is badusrname@gmail.com, please let me in on any tips, me and two friends just got the phone and now we are trying to find ways to make it work for us

and another BTW, try battery graph, it keeps track of battery status and percent, and u can keep track of it. and export it to sd card

Hey guys Ive been reading the posts about the 100% usage, Ive previously downloaded handscent and have been using it ever since. I unchecked the notifications box in the original messaging app. However, my phone usage still says 100%. I was wondering if youmail has anything to do with this. I saw that you mentioned it in the first article; however, was unsure if you take off your mobile network does youmail still try to connect; therefore, wasting your battery? If so, are there anyways of fixing the problem without getting rid of youmail? Thanks for your help guys

This sticky is quite helpful in the "short term". And several of the things itemized are fairly obvious and are unneeded fluff anyway. But I personally draw the line at item 5 "toggling mobile network on & off" and item 12 "auto-syncing Google acct". --- I have to ask then why even have a smart phone? --- Especially if you have to do all of these things resulting in the inability to "spontaneously" enjoy using the features of your smart phone.

Don't get me wrong. I love my Eris but the "BATTERY LIFE IS APPAULING!" --- The Eris is my 5th smartphone in about 4 1/2 years. I previously have had a Palm, a Motorola and 2 Blackberries. I love the Android OS. I love using the Android OS on my Eris. Through my research before buying the Eris, I knew to limit my use of widgets, change frequency of updates, and to kill apps and tasks as needed. Essentially, I felt that I was prepared for its less than stellar battery life (understatement). And after the first couple of weeks I was a believer in the phone and the OS, but severely hampered by battery life. Then I read "The Other Droid Cell Phone
