Optimize your Droid Eris battery life (READ THIS)

Is there any difference how the phone charges whether its via the Outlet (which uses the usb plugged into the outlet charger), plugging the USB into your computer, or using a car charger?

I am in the process of trying to kill my battery playing videos, etc..with the intention to do the 3 - 4 full recharges.

dude....did you read the giant conversation above about how that doing that isnt neccessary?

Conditioning didn't hurt mine. I'm getting good battery out of mine afer doing it, just don't think it would be any different if i hadn't.

Oh great, so now I'm really confused :) After ordering my Eris online, I started reading the forums like crazy and thought the battery conditioning was a must, now I'm not so sure.

I sounds like if you do the 3-day trick, it won't hurt at least, correct?
I believe that to generally be correct. I suppose there is a slim chance that discharging the battery until the phone powers down could result in damage but there are most likely safety features in place to prevent that. So, drain away...just don't expect much return from your efforts.

Thanks CaddyMan.

1. Can we add the process to turn off settings along with the "turn off blah"..some have , but not all.

2. I turned off 3G (mobile network off) and that saves battery a lot.. I know, why get a smartphone if you are using 3G -- reason for getting smartphone is many folded.
a) I can use wifi at home, which means to check email or post social site update, I do not need to boot my laptop.
b) if I need 3G when outside, I can still enable and use it (which was not possible with dumb phone, I had before)

added instructions for those 3, and added the tips...

For the below 3 settings (tips 2, 3, and 4) you can easily set toggles on your home screen to flip these on and off with one touch. Simply hold a open spot on your home screen to add widget, pick htc widgets, pick settings, then add whatever widget you want to control.

or use one app called quick settings

Nice program, but it really needs a 1x1 or 1x2 widget that shows the status of the services that are up. You can see that BT and 3G are on by looking at the status bar but the Wifi service only shows you it's on if there's a connection and GPS gives you no indication it's on. An alternative would be to provide the ability to automatically turn off BT, 3G, etc. when the phone goes to sleep. Too bad...I'd love to get rid of the data connection widgets on my home screen!

I use quick profiles app to setup sounds/vibe profiles for work, home, etc (much like my bb had native) but that is it.

Too bad Quick Profiles does not allow you to include toggling Mobile Networks and GPS. Have you tried 'Ear'? It doesn't allow those profile toggles either but it would be nice to hear your comparison.

no i stick with what works, sometimes i will try something new.

i will give ear a shot tonight if i can

i did switch atrso file manager for es file explorer, seems a little better

If you disable the mobile network, pretty much the only things that will work are phone / voicemail and text messages.

This leaves the phone in a completely worthless state!!!! I added the widget to turn off the mobile network on my homepage, in hopes of saving some battery life, and i later found out that it directs calls directly to voicemail and you never receive any text messages if mobile network is off......

What would be the point? Also, when your phone is turned off and someone sends you a text, will you never end up receiving that text? I have found this to be true.. But if someone know more please help! Thanks in advance.

By the way new to the site today, very informative!

I'm able to receive and make phone calls even with Mobile toggled off. I know that I can't use Google Voice to make outgoing calls, but normal cellular calls go through just fine. I don't know about text because I have that disabled.

^This is all incorrect. If you are not receiving phone calls and texts with Mobile Network off then something is wrong with your phone.

Mobile network and "Always On Mobile" are two DIFFERENT things!!! I have the "Always on Mobile" off, and I get calls, texts, emails etc. It's located under Settings > Wireless Controls > MOBILE NETWORK SETTINGS > "Enable always-on mobile"

Please don't confuse those 2 ;)

is it good to keep the charging the phone even though it is done charging.
I know this is a basic question. But i hear different stories. What do you guys think.

dude....did you read the giant conversation above about how that doing that isnt neccessary?
As per a Verizon tech (not a salesperson) supposedly charging your phone with a car charger is only recommended for short bursts like 20-30 minutes because the power coming through the system can burn out your battery pronto.

I called Verizon yesterday about the Dec 11th update I was told this. It has nothing to do with the battery and we WILL NOT be upgraded to 2.0 with this update. The update involes. Faster SMS, giving more space (80 chars) on MMS. Easier ways to put speaker on and mute well in a call. The power botton can hang up from the screensaver and turn it on from the screensaver. Thats about it.

I had to yet got the update she told me so many thousands got it yestterday and the rest of us by 12 noon today would have it. No matter what you are doing the phone will say there is a new update and to let you install it now or later.

At 1:30pm EST today I had not yet gotten my update so I called back. I was then informed my phone my not get the update. I said its a general update all phone should get it not just a few. So she asked tech support and I quote. "There is an update for the Droid Eris, it was sent out December 10th and will take at least a WEEK to get to all the Eris phones. So if you have not gotten your update by this time next week plesase call us back."

So there you have it, I hope this update comes faster then next week as we were promised a Dec 11th update on Dec 11th! I am also shocked that we will not have a battery fix with it and we will not be upgrade to 2.0 at this time. I needed 2.0 b/c I am travling next week and needed the Google Nav voice. Unless you guys know of a free App in the market that does Turn by Turn voice Nag for free. I would love to find that out cuz the ones I found don't do voice. I can't be looking at the phone the whole time I am driving, and having to wake it up from its sleep too.

Personally I'm not surprised that everyone didn't get the update ON the 11th. To send that much data over the air to however many hundreds of thousands of phones in the course of 24 hours, that'd cripple their system. We might all get updates, but couldn't do anything else until all the updates were done. And I suspect that they actual document was that the update would be RELEASED on 12/11, not that it would be on all phones. It was just assumed here on the forums that we'd ALL have our updates on 12/11, I doubt that Verizon ever actually said that.

Use Nav4All for turn by turn navigation. Change your setting so that the phone doesn't go to sleep when plugged in, and put in a car charger. Though Nav4All WILL talk even though the phone is asleep, you just won't be able to see the screen unless you wake the phone.

From reports by those who have received the update, the battery life is noticeably improved.
