Optimize your Droid Eris battery life (READ THIS)

Thanks for the clarification. Also...you're tip...I'm not playing with it 24/7.
I had actually tried the Moto Droid when it first came out, and kept it for two weeks...and the battery conditioned just fine on that one.
I'm in a transition from iPhone/ATT back to VZW...and hopefully an Android device. The reason why I took the Droid back was I thought I couldn't live without the almighty iPhone. But a couple days of terrible ATT reception, and I was back on the trail back to VZW...thus, I picked up the Eris for a try. Not working out so well...only because of the battery.
In most cases like this, I would think it was a bad battery...but, I've read SOOOO much about this on this and other forums that I don't think I've just got a bad one.

If you'll just be patient, there is an OTA update coming to help with battery life, and a company called Seido has a 1750mAh extended battery in production. I'll certainly be buying it. :)

The update is coming in a week and some change.
I prefer the Eris because it's smaller, faster for me anyways, I can't stand the DROID's keyboard or its lagginess. I've never really had a Motorola phone I liked. Their hardware is horrible IMO.
Just overall a better user experience for me. Not to mention I got it for free. :P
 
downloading a battery widget is no help. it drains the battery. I uninstalled one and wow what a big difference.

I also find this to be true. It's not a surprise either. I thing the stock Messages app is akin to Handcent as 3rd party Windows software uses Windows services in XP and Vista. Even if you set Handcent to be your default messaging app all that does is tell the Android OS to call Handcent when a message arrives. If you open the stock messaging app at any time you'll see all of the same messages you'd see if open Handcent. It appears as though Handcent needs HTC's Messages service to work so I'd be surprised if you can keep it from coming back and still have a functioning SMS app. I'm also not aware of any way to check if the Messages process/Application is running without an app like Advanced Task Manager. Fortunately, despite the parasitic relationship between Handcent and the Messages app we can still overcome the 100% awake time issue.
 
if they would just fix this issue (100% awake always pops back up) and the bluetooth, which is a complete disaster from start to finish with a software update i would be happier than a pig in _____.
 
Too bad that every extended life battery has to be a pregnant guppy. It would be a crime to saddle the sleek Eris with a bulky battery.
 
Ok I just got the new battery but I wanna drain this one I am using for today so I can use the phone. Advice I am looking for is, should I with the new battery, use it till it drains, or just charge it from outta the box? Also which is better charging with phone on or off? I do on b/c I use it as my alarm and my old phone when I turned it off and the alarm was on it went off every 3 hrs. Will the eris so that too or am I safe to turn in off and it will still go off at the correct time?

I leave the phone off until it's completely charged to be safe. :)
And the Eris won't cut on automatically for any reason, sadly. I miss that auto-on/auto-off feature from the BlackBerry. :(
 
I found out that the program LifeAware keeps my phone at 100% wake time. It broadcasts my GPS location every 15 to 60 minutes, depending on my settings. I know and use Google Maps for other things, but that doesn't broadcast location unless you turn it on. So I'm stuck with this program for now.

All that said, I still get between 14 and 16 hours of battery life a day with moderate web use, GPS, messaging, etc. So it's not too bad.

If anyone knows of a better GPS location program, please let me know. I use it to keep track of my elderly parents (my dad has an Eris too). The program has to run in the background, and automatically broadcast location...preferably at a fixed time interval.
 
I honestly think this is my exact problem. Area I live in has really bad reception and VZW knows this. My bars always stay gray and it just sucks my battery dry by constantly looking for signal. :)

I live out in the woods so to speak, very rural, there is a tower that went up 7 miles from my house and made my service worse. :( Before this tower went up the nearest one was 16 miles away and I got better service. Yes 16 miles, I live at a high elevation so there was no terrain blocking.
