Root Flashing my first ROM !!

Hi
This is my phone :
BaseBand: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build: 2.29.405.2 CL263770 release-keys
Software: 2.29.405
I've rooted it using unrevoked, resized my SD Card using Gparted and created 6.5GB FAT32 & 1.5GB Ext3 partitions.

So now I want to try a new ROM ! First time so bit nervous etc..
Created a backup using titanium and a nandroid backup.

So what's next ? I'd like to try either cyanogen or gingervillian.
Which is the most stable and speedy ? ( I do need GPS working )

Any advise on the ROM, and how to proceed from here !! ?

Thanks :)

lol you managed to get this far but you dont know?

thats amazing as clearly youhave been good and read the guides as youve used gparted etc.

go to the prospective roms thread and download the file (zip)
put it on sdcard, boot to recovery, backup device, wipe device, flash from zip, reboot, wait for about 5 mins, enjoy

:o
possibly a silly question..

Once CyanogenMod-7 has been installed, how do I add the google apps ?
Do I just copy it to my SD Card, and flash it via recovery ?

First flash done, cyanogenmod & Google apps installed :D
Thanks for all the help and patience !!

Before I download titanium to recover my apps, do I need to do anything to allow me to put the apps onto my SD card ?

Cheers

Yes. There are a couple of a2sd options in the CM7 thread at xda - choose whichever you like the sound of. It's another flash I'm afraid.

Hi
Apps are now restored. but no messages etc.
How do I get them back ?

I've installed S2E (simple2ext): app2sd for CyanogenMod7, how do I tell where apps are installed to ?

I've also got app2sd installed. This was recovered from my backup. That seems to be showing most apps on the SD card. But is that in the EXT3 partition ?

Thanks :)

slow down and read the a2sd guide it explains all

dont move apps to sdcard. s2e moves apps to ext (they are still seen by the phone as installed on internal)

apps2sd moves it to sdcard in the froyo/gb way which is not what you want at all. so remove that

you cannot recover messages unless you backed them up using mysms backup to google.

Thanks. I wondered if that's what I'd done !!
I did do a backup using mybackup pro, I presume that will restore the SMS's..

OK all apps moved back to phone.
Quick system info shows :

SD Card
6.10GB, Free 3.7GB

A2SD Storage
1.48GB, Free 1.30GB

Internal
148MB, Free 60.21MB

System Storage
250MB, Free 124MB

Anyway to see what's in the A2SD storage ?

Best thing to get sms back is to take a backup of the new rom (nandroid via recovery) restore your previous backup, install either mybackup or sms backup+ or whatever and backup SMS.

Then restore your newest backup, install teh app again and restore.

They can be restored in titanium but its very messy

Edit> Too late

You can browse to sd-ext with root explorer if you bought that. Did you move dalvik cache too?

Or

Open terminal emulator (which you must install)

Type

"su" and press enter
type

"ls -lh /sd-ext" and press enter

This will list everything in SD-ext

You can also "ls -lh /sd-ext/data/app" which is where the apps themselves are.

I think sd-ext/data/app is the place. Or maybe sd-ext/app? I cant remember. You'll see when you do the first command

Hi
Got my sms and call logs back from my mybackup pro backup. :)

I didn't move the dalvik cache.. wasn't sure if I should ?
I take it's OK to move that then

A2SD now shows :
1.48GB, Free 1.23GB

Internal Storage:
148MB, Free 133MB :D

Couple of little niggles to resolve, but that seems to be the individual apps.
I'll start a new thread for that!

Thanks for all the help !
