BTW, I can play High@L4.1 video on my Galaxy Tab, normal speed, no stuttering or freezing. However, this is 720p. I'll see if I have any 1080p material to test with.

^^^ You changed your post too quick, and I didn't catch it.

Post is related to S2 >>>>>
Did you watch that video? Maybe it was the other I didn't post... When clicking the High@L4.1 planet earth mkv, it would do nothing, w/ the samsung gpu accelerated media player. With RockPlayer, of course it skipped because of lack of gpu.

This playback begs a larger question. I always thought it was the limited Android API framework that made codec/container support so craptacular on Android devices, hence, mobo, rock, and all the other crap. How does Samsung manage to provide GPU acceleration where other market players can not???

The 3VO is going to be a top 3 phone of 2011, and maybe even the number 1 if the 3D trend continues the way it has.

I could bet you that some version of the SGSII will most definitely be the #1 phone of 2011, but the 3vo or Sensation will definitely be in the top 3 :)

The SGSII may have more storage space, and the AMOLED Plus display, but I think that with the combination of HTC Sense 3.0, 3D technology, 4G on Sprints WIMAX network, 1.2 dual core snapdragon processor, shipping with Android 2.3.3 and later upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich, & a huge 1730 mAh Li-Ion battery.

I like the 3vo alot and I'm going to use it for about 30 days before I exchange it for the Within. But The SGSII is the clear winner for me with the Super Amoled Plus, 1.2 ghz exynos processor, significantly lighter and thinner, TouchWiz 4.0, 8-mp cam with 1080p recording, 2-mp front cam, significantly more internal storage, significantly more video playback codecs, possible 4G, possible NFC, shipping with Android 2.3.3, upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich and a huge 1650 mAh that still most likely will last longer than the 3vo's.

has there been a carrier announced yet for the SGSII?

I have seen VZW, Sprint, & ATT all thrown around on blogs and articles, but i haven't heard any official info yet.

I don't think it has officially been announced for anyone yet but obviously it will be released on every carrier in some form just like the original. Samsung and apple been getting into it a lot recently, so I wouldn't be surprised if samsung flood the market with the various sgs2's around the time the next iphone is released which will be in september.

Did anyone watch the review posted, the SGS II doesnt record video on the front camera. And the hits just keep on coming. I bet the 3VO battery will last longer in most situations if previous gens are any indication.

Still sounds like Samsung is gunning for specs and HTC user friendliness. If I can manage to walk out of the sprint store without a 3VO in a week or so, ill get the within. I'm trying to decide if I should keep my 4G or not though.

Is that for the 'diary confessions'? :D:o:eek:

Regarding previous comment on 4g, I know it hasn't been announced, but is it humanly possible the s2 WON'T have 4g? Don't you all find that highly unlikely? I don't even plan on running 4G much anyway tho, in an effort to conserve battery life. I wish 'premium data' was an option w/ Sprint. That is one additional charge I'm not looking forward to.

Shipping w/ v2.3.3 when 2.3.4 is out isn't cool tho.

I just can't believe they would do that. That is ridiculous they would leave it out at this time. If its additionally not 4G, that is a big FAIL for me. Pass.

...the SGS II doesnt record video on the front camera.

I can't really imagine a time when I would want to record video on the front camera.

No, I don't think it is possible that Sprint would essentially downgrade a premium phone by not including the 4G radio in the required specs for the Samsung Within. The phone would be written off by most customers.

In the question of 3VO vs SGSII

...

I have come to a personal conclusion that the relationship that Sprint and HTC have is just too solid, and HTC is too well reviewed of a company to put out a lackluster phone as their new flagship model. The 3VO is going to be a top 3 phone of 2011, and maybe even the number 1 if the 3D trend continues the way it has. The SGSII may have more storage space, and the AMOLED Plus display, but I think that with the combination of HTC Sense 3.0, 3D technology, 4G on Sprints WIMAX network, 1.2 dual core snapdragon processor, shipping with Android 2.3.3 and later upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich, & a huge 1730 mAh Li-Ion battery, HTC might just have the perfect storm as far as upgrading the world renowned EVO 4G.

And this is why Android is awesome, because choice > all. We have all these great manufacturers putting out awesome phones throughout the year, and everyone can choose the device that they like the most.

Personally, I has super excited when the SGII was first announced and I read the glowing review on Engadget. But now that I've compared the specs to the EVO 3D, and without going through a comparison of all the specs again, it is > than the GSII for me.

One thing on the weight and feel though: just looking at the specs online on weight (116g vs 170g) and thickness (8.5mm vs 12mm), I got the impression that the EVO 3D would be way too thick and heavy. But in actuality, I much prefer the weight and feel of the EVO 4G (same thickness and weight as the 3vo) than the weight and feel of the Galaxy S (same weight as GSII). The EVO just felt soo solid in my hand and the Galaxy S felt like a plastic toy. Granted, these aren't the exact phones we are comparing, but should be very similar in terms of weight and feel.

I don't think the GSII will have 4G. One, it hasn't been announced at all, and you'd think it would because it is a big feature. And two, I don't think it's possible to squeeze in the 4G radio in that 8.5mm body, since those things take up a good amount of space from my (very limited) understanding.

Also, 4G uses a lot of power, so it would reduce the battery life of the GSII by a not insignificant amount, while adding cost (part and design), which might be a tradeoff that Samsung is not willing to make. This also might explain why Samsung's releasing the GSIII so soon after the GSII (Q1-Q2 2012).

No, the LTE 4G radio is the one that takes up a lot of space, I'm pretty sure they would be able to fit the WiMax radio in the current sgs2's form. Also, the original SGS2 has HSPA+ "4G", so I would expect the Within to have it too also considering the fact that its the successor to the EPIC 4G.

I'll bet $20 it does.:D.S2 w/o is just asinine to the ears. It's like a BMW w/o leather. However, in this imaginary universe, I'd gladly take it for a $100 less than the presumed $200 it will sell for. No thanks WiMax... UNLESS, that speed were fast enough to stream some 4-5000kbps video bit-stream action!

Hey, quick question. Will S2 charge over HDMI or is that a 3Vo only feature?

I think the Verizon SGS2 will not have 4G... in saying that I must also say I believe the Sprint version will have 4G. Why? Verizon has just released it's 4G lineup and they don't seem to be making it a priority. Look at the Droid X2. New top of the line phone; Released without 4G. While on the other hand Sprint advertises 4G heavily in it's marketing and in it's devices. Also, Sprint is not afraid to heavily modify the form factor. I foresee the Fascinate 2 and Epic 4G 2 hitting the market this summer/fall.

I could be completely wrong though... I'm just speculating.

Sounds like a fair assessment seeing that Sprint has to capitalize on WiMax as quickly as possible because it has no true road map. Dually, that may be a good enough reason for Samsung to ignore it all together. Have there been other WiMax Samsung phones?

AFAICT, almost all h.264 content online is high profile, not just scene (mkv container is largely scene only); youtube HD is one blatant example. it also uses CABAC.

Does anyone know if the Evo 3D/MSM8660 supports high profile H264 MKVs? I couldn't find anything definitive online. Qualcomm had this PDF on their site which mentions that the single core 45nm Snapdragons do not support high profile H264 but it didn't say anything about the dual core Snapdragons.

http://www.qualcomm.com/documents/files/linley-report-dual-core-snapdragon.pdf

@stlc8tr: in short, no.

Well, that sucks. The attract-o-meter for the SGS2 just ticked up a bit and the one for the 3D just ticked down a bit for me. Why in the world would Qualcomm leave out high profile H264 decoding for their flagship Snapdragon?

Sigh, I really wish Sprint would announce a date for the SGS2.

As soon as you buy a phone that doesnt have it you will. Let's face it, these phones have far more capability than almost all of is will use on a regular basis, but we want the stuff anyways because you never know. Plus there are millions using Skype with video etc to communicate with loved ones that live far away.

Samsung won't make a peep about it though and lots of people will end up dissapointed.

Because HTC doesn't put any value in multicodec support. And it's not just high profile that's the issue -- the Sensation can't play mkv natively at all. Nor can it play Divx. It can play mp4 files like the Evo and has Xvid support, but as a video player, it pales in comparison to the S2. I'm not sure if rockplayer or moboplayer can play 720p mkv files on the Sensation.

I actually almost didn't get the Evo because of the lack of codec support. But the fact that I could at least play SD avi files with Rockplayer was the reason I jumped from WinMo to Android. Seriously, if Rockplayer didn't exist last year, I probably would have passed on the Evo.

BTW, I was able to play a High@L4.1 1080p clip (encoded at 15mbps!) on the Galaxy Tab smoothly. But High@L5.1 was a black screen. I transmuxed the clip to mp4, but it still wouldn't play, but I don't know if it was an issue with the file or the device.

And oh yeah -- if the S2 doesn't have 4G (which I find highly unlikely), that's a deal breaker.

Sprint not releasing any details on the Within is going to hurt sales. I for one, cannot wait for a phone that we don't have a solid release date one, especially when we don't know for sure if there will be 4g on it. I asked the sprint rep today and they said "the what, what is that"? I just can't wait. The 3D will have 30 days to let me down enough to change my mind.

I am not sure it is up to Sprint. Last I read Samsung was attempting a same day release on all 4 major US carriers so they may be playing it close to the vest.
