Root Gen1 to Gen2 this weekend - possibly!

I might attempt to upgrade my OSF to Gen2 this weekend. I've had a quick look at the guide Shadowninty posted:

Gen1 to Gen2 TPT upgrade - Android @ MoDaCo

I want the most simple idiot proof way of upgrading! :p

This paragraph caught my attention:

If you want the latest CM7 version as a TPT which will upgrade you Gen2 & do everything in one step, CM 7.0.3 TPT is here, mirror (size: 105.8mb md5:ce0780ab4104903edc957688b65d598b) or CM7 Nightly 98 gen2 upgrade TPT is here, (size:104.01mb md5:19037c6064c7841494d299af06dbcfb7 2mb cache, 140mb system, 314mb data). It's a similar process to above & can be used as an alternative to the above TPT, it installs the latest CM7 rom & clockworkmod for you as well as upgrading to Gen2.

Would this be the best approach for the intellectually challanged like myself?

I'm still not sure I fully understand the process. Once I get home from work I'll download the files to see if it makes more sense.
 
If you go for it, let me know how you get on, I'll see if the Mrs lets me mess about with hers over the weekend.

CM7 is quite nice btw, I've it installed on my DHD and if the tweaks etc are anything like they are on that, it's worth doing.
 
Originally I'd planned to keep SS RLS5 for a while, but I have poor 3G reception with my giffgaff sim, which has spurred me onto wishing to upgrade to Gen2 to see if that improves things.

I might still bottle it. :p

You can Nandroid in the Backup/Restore option in ClockworkMod
Definitely take a backup, although perhaps you should try out CyanogenMod7.1 now

Wife had a strop all weekend so didn't get a chance to mess about with my phone. Maybe next weekend.

Okay I'm going to go for it.

At the moment my OSF is a Gen1 running Swedish Spring RLS5.

When i did that upgrade I installed:

recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img
RecoveryManager_v0.36b.apk
Swedish_Spring_RLS5.zip
UniversalAndroot (a version linked to me by El Presidente - the one in the guide didn't work for me).

I backed up my stock rom before doing that install using clockwork. I shall copy this onto my PC for safe keeping.

I don't care if I lose my apps/contacts etc.

Shall i just go with the CM7 Nightly 105 gen2 upgrade TPT is here?

If so what exactly are the steps I need to follow?

or should I just use Gen1-to-Gen2-TPT-v7.zip and unzip the image file onto my SD card along with a Gen2 rom?

The version of Swedish Spring RLS5 I use said:

Supports both Gen1 and Gen2 phones. Use x880 version of Clockwork for Gen2 phones. Will choose the right kernel automaticly during install.

What should i do about that?
 
So all I need to do is unzip the Gen1-to-Gen2-TPT-v7.zip image file to my SD card and make sure I have the Swedish_Spring_RLS5.zip on the SD card as well.

Power off, wait a few seconds, then power on with menu & vol+ held.

Then pray to the gods whilst it does its stuff?
 
Ah. The guide said:

It should take a few seconds to flash the new Gen2 firmware (you should see some green text), then it should reboot into ClockworkMod recovery, use that to wipe data & then install your Gen2 rom.
 
Charging the phone before I do any of this!

Should I just flash SS again or take the plunge and try Cyanogenmod? Arrrgh decisions!
 
Another daft question!

CM7 Nightly 105 gen2 upgrade TPT is here, (size:104.46mb md5:3bc05a46260dc345504d5f4a5d596a60 2mb cache, 140mb system, 314mb data).

I unzipped the image file onto my SD card. I have Astro File File Manager. Which file from the image folder is supposed to have the md5 above?
 
D'oh! How do I check this on a PC? Or shall i just copy it to my OSF to check it? (and delete it after)
