Battery problems, quirks and issues: Read first.

I have been having problems with the moments battery life also but mine is probly the worst as i can charge it for hours and then take it off the charger and without ANY use its dead in 5 hours...wth?
I can also not start my phone in test mode which i have tried a number of times but it doesnt work for me. Any help?
 
What other programs do you have running in the background? Turn off the GPS, and wifi, dim your screen, and download advanced task killer from the android market place. This kills any background programs that can potentially run your battery down. Also, you should also let the battery discharge to nearly dead (red) with the backlight unactivated. Repeat several times and take note to your battery life. Take the phone off the charger as soon as it's charged all the way too. If you normally have it on standby, there's no need to continously charge it. As others have said you have to "condition" the battery to begin seeing results.

In my experience, my battery lasts all day long, yesterday by 10pm it was at 50% with very light texting, web browsing, and 1-2 short very calls. I use all the aforementioned techniques. It's really not all that bad, be patient.

Ever noticed ordinary batteries have metal wrap all the way to the probes. Why didn't they wrap them up with tough plastic? This could have reduced the price of the battery and be less corossive. BUT the problem is it could be subjected to extremely high frequencies from space.

Samsung Moment battery has non-metalic exposure on either sides. Just don't make any sense in this day and age. Otherwise, the phone is fantastic.

I understand it is a free world and you think you are helping.. but repeating this over and over again isnt going to make it true.. there is a software issue in the stock kernel battery code that is the reason it seems to drain so fast and then the minimum reporting level before it kills the phone is set to high... all this talk about emf interference is not really true with lithium-ion polymer batteries..

It was only marketted for a very short time and then discountinued about 10 years ago. The idea was for more safty for cordless electric shavers. They could also cause resonance of molecules thereby change in chemical recations. Therefore, they must be sealed and protected properly.

I don't understant how an element in a Linux kernal makes battery to drain in an erratic manner on a given day. It could start a switch to charge and another switch to stop charge and a few other, but if the battery is discharging at a different rate with no application running in the background, then, it could be the battery itself defective. Defective Lithium-ion battery must be recalled for replacement as soon as possible.

About software issue, Samsung Moment now runs on Android 1.5(old version) and may be upgraded to Android 2.0 with updates on firmware to fix battery charge/discarge issues if any.

What needed is, Samsung to resolve this issue through Sprint, rather keep talking about it and nothing is being done.

IT HAS BEEN FIXED.. if you knew anything about linux and how the kernel interprets battery power (as i documented and have linked to numerous times) then you woould understand.. instead in no less then 5 different posts you have said the same thing eventho i have corrected you in the past... This is lithium ion polymer cell structure.. There is no such thing as a uniform discharge pattern...

You just proved that WASEN'T A LITHIUM ION POLYMER CELL.. 10 years ago they were using Ni-MH and Ni-Cd (which they still do to this day in most lower end consumer products like razors)...

Seriously learn about this stuff (linux kernel, phone implementation, c code, battery cell structure and electrolytic design and discharge) before you attempt to theorize what is going on... or leave kernel dev interpretation and implementation to those who spent days and weeks studying how the phone works and created a fix..
I spent 4 years on my bachelors studying chemistry and physics and 1 and a half of those were spent specifically on electrolytic and galvanic cells and how they are designed and structured... I am also getting my masters sub-specializing in radioactive materials and am pretty well versed in all aspects of the EM spectrum...


If you can answer this question then you can continue to attempt to explain why the stock battery meter doesn't work (and why zefs kernels do... since i am the one who rewrote the battery code based off of the behold II discharge structure): How does the kernel report the capacity in the battery and what does it use as the conversion method? (give you a hint.. it doesn't use voltage of the cell specifically)

P.s. my samsung moment is now reading 10% battery left.. Time since last plugin (probably 100% or a little less then that) it has spent 12 hours 49 minutes and 32 seconds without sleeping (the phone hasent gone to sleep due to meebo requiring a constant data connection)...
So it has lasted almost 13 hours with moderate to moderate-heavy use (15 phone calls at about 5-10 minutes a piece.. 30+ sms messages.. downloaded a bunch of stuff from the market... ran google maps for an hour or so... been using sensor data..)

Thanks for your insight. I appreciate your time and effort to resolve this matter as I don't know much about Linux programming. I am only sharing what I know from my experience.

One thing I know from emperical(not theoritical) observation is that EHF radiation do affect batteries. There could be low orbiting satellites emitting radiation close to 300GHz (Microwave oven is only about 2.5 GHz). I am aware of cosmic rays with EHF and that even did not affect batteries in olden days with cardboard wrapping as they are filtered out and attunated by atmosphere. The reason why high frequency emitting satellites are launched in low orbits may be because to bypass the natural filter.:rolleyes:

There were days my Samsung Moment was fully functional for 24 hours. Well there was heavy snow fall:o at that time. Didn't you read that post earlier:mad:. Then, one day it retains charge only for 12 hours. Now it is keeping charge for 16 hours. This drives anyone crazy as charge retention is not constant and reliable when no application is running in the background.

You mentioned the problen is fixed software wise. Why is it that the battery is reading low voltage on my multimeter after discharge? I still think the battery is defective or poorly designed and consumers must be given replcement battery as a recall.

I never trusted Samsung battery reading for charging ever since it was reporting 80% charge, minutes after 100% charge. I use other third party download to charge the battery so that I could have practical use of the phone.
 
I've noticed the same thing with my phone. Charging level drops off 100% down to 80% practically as fast as I can walk from house to the car. I noticed it this morning because the inidicator on my handsfree in the car showed my level wasnt full and I thought that was strange since it was charging all night.

More importantly, its not just a level indicator problem, this thing just doesn't last. I hardly made any calls, sent some text messages and have activesync setup on it. 8 Hours laters, the thing says its on 15% of life. And, it died an hour later. 9 Hours for a phone is ridiculous. I've used a bunch of crappy phones and I'm beginning to miss my old Blackjack already. Hell, even in 3g mode, it would last almost two days with similar usage.

My girlfriend also got a hero so I've had a chance to play with that and the battery life on that is better but it aint much to crow about either.

We might end up returning them both. I really like the android setup but I need a phone that can last a whole day not just 9 hours.

Funny you should mention your Blackjack and it's battery: The Blackjack battery works with the Moment. It doesn't fit PERFECTLY but it does work (Only the BlackJack 1 though. I had the Blackjack 2 and the battery is just a cm too wide).

The system Android system doesn't let you charge the phone with the battery though because it recognizes that it isn't the stock Moment battery. I found a small peice of plastic that's flexible to put in the gap where the BlackJack battery doesn't fit entirely in the Moment but I used it all day yesterday, no problems.

Anyone else experiment with this battery?
 
I'm sorry but I still don't get it; I assume most of u must not have come from Smartphone/PDA's because this(even @ 8-9hrs) is one of the longest lasting Smartphones(if u will) there are... thatz all I've had since the very 1st nextel Blackberrys hit in 2000; since, I've had the Pocket PC, then Sprint Mogul up til now & never had any phones that could go without a charge 2-5hrs later.. I am a heavy user but still the point remains the same...jus sayin:cool:
 
Oh another tip to keep your battery going longer is to simply shut off the background data synchronization if you are not really using it. I have a Samsung Moment and after turning that off, the battery life stayed at 80% the entire day practically since 2 pm yesterday it is now 3:38 pm and it's around 40%
 
Ok sooooo. For anyone who doesn't know. Sprint came out with the update to fix issues. BUT... a lot of stores have stupid employees that have no clue into how to update or anything. SOOOOO....I did the update myself. You can go join sdx-developers.com and then go to this link HERE(to get the actual update file) and HERE(to get the step by step instructions of actually how to do the update).

Pretty easy to do. And I must say, my battery is great. I took it off the charger 2.5 hrs ago and made a few calls and texts and turned on wifi and I am still at 100%

I have a Blackberry Curve for work, and it will last several days on a full charge. Maybe even a week. Of course, it doesn't have any apps installed on it because it's locked down.

I have the CL14 update on my Moment and still haven't seen much of an improvement with battery life. The one thing that totally kills my battery is having auto-sync enabled. With that enabled I will have to charge mid-day in order to make through the evening. I really think that auto-sync is a fantastic feature but I could do with having the sync kick in every 30 minutes or an hour if that would give me substantially better battery life. Does anyone know of a way that this could be accomplished? Possibly having a schedule that will turn auto-sync on every so often and then disable it after a few minutes. For just emails I could switch over to the Android email app but than I wouldn't have my calendar and contacts synced that way. If anyone has any ideas I would to hear them.

i agree, the email and calendar could be kept up to date, but gmail brought over every person i've ever emailed so i have like almost a thousand contacts now which i'm sure takes some power to keep synching.

It's not too late. SPH-M900 - How To Maximize Battery Life SAMSUNG

Check out that link and let the battery almost die out before recharging. Do so for a few days and keep track of how long the battery lasts after each day.

It was too late the moment you took it out of the box. Conditioning doesn't do anything. Go to a Sprint service center, get the update and you should see improvement.
 
The best way to extend the battery life that I have found is to turn off Auto-Sync. I have quit using the GMail app and setup the email app to check for gmail every five minutes. I also have Exchange-ActiveSync set for every 15 minutes for my work email and work calendar. Downside is that I don't automatically sync my contacts and calendar for my gmail account but have to do it manually. The upside is I don't have to charge my phone during the day to make it through the evening like I had to before I turned Auto-Sync off. If I could just find a way to sync my gmail contacts and calendar on a schedule instead of having it do it always I would be completely happy. Might not be the ideal situation but it works for me. The moment is a great phone made even better with the update.
 
Thatz not a fact; it took me from 3-4hrs to 18+ hrs & on heavy use 10 or so...

numus seems to be the resident expert on the battery. After all, it was he that rewrote the battery level indicator code in Zefie's kernel. Read his replies in this very thread, which are currently at the top of this page. No amount of conditioning ever improved my battery life but installing Zefies kernel made my batteries life go from 15 hours to two days. I hear that the update at the Sprint service centers also has rewritten code which greatly improves how the battery is measured.

To clarify, it's not the life of the battery, it's how the life of the battery is measured. The code is faulty and it thinks the battery is low when it isn't.
 
Yeah but I'm talkin about real world scenarios; the 1st couple says I had my phone was the soul reason I found this forum, being my battery life was going down(actually shutting off|not just battery metering issues) within 3-4 hrs & after following the conditions steps its been much different since so there is no need for me to read a theory; I don't carer about those as most of u do; I go buy real world... Please Don't take offense to this Alki as I am just stating my point;)
