Help Home screen inadvertent deletion

It appears I deleted an icon from my home screen inadvertently (there were a lot of strange things happening as the battery was going comatose; these things really should have shipped with stronger batteries, but I digress). Is there any way to locate and restore an icon inadvertently deleted? Thanks.

@RMarkwald, that's the problem. I couldn't remember just from looking at the empty space on the screen. Eventually, I plowed through all my apps and remembered the missing app from seeing it in the list (an item called WWDiary, to be specific). But the basic question remains: If you lose an app from a home screen without realizing it, is there some way to restore it? PCs and Macs have this ability; I imagine other computer OSs do as well. I would think it should have been integral to Android systems from jump street; but I don't know that for sure.

I may be missing the question here but to place or replace and app on your homescreen, just long press the app while in the app list which allows you to move it to any of your homescreens provided there's an empty space available for it. Was it an icon or was it a widget?

@iowabowtech, the problem wasn't adding an icon to the home screen, it was restoring an icon that had been inadvertently deleted from the home screen; that is, it was there one moment, gone the next, I have no idea how; and only slogging through the entire list of apps jogged my memory as to which one had disappeared. There should be an easier way to restore an icon, or even a widget, to the home screen if inadvertently deleted, especially if you can't remember what it was. (And like a lot of people, eventually I think in patterns. Think about it: If you actually dial a phone, do you think through the number every time, or do some numbers just naturally fall under your fingers because you've dialed them so many times? If the latter, you're a pattern dialer. Same things with icons on the home screens on the dinc. You scroll over to one of the seven screens, you tap a location on the screen. Eventually you lose track of what that icon launches, you just know it by position. So I lost the actual icon and couldn't immediately remember which app was in that position. There should be an easier way to restore an icon than traipsing through every app on your device and hoping you remember the missing app.)

I see. Well, on some newer versions of Android there is such a feature...Google backup settings. Phone settings are saved to Google servers although I'm not exactly sure how individual items like your Sense homescreen configuration would be restored after an indavertant deletion.

In the case of rooted users, it can be used when flashing roms but then there is wholesale restore of the previous configuration upon initial bootup, including the actual apps autoloading from the market. Not sure if this, or a portion of it, will be included in GB for the Inc or not.

Another root option is Titanium Backup which can backup/restore pretty much anything on the phone. I realize you didn't ask about root options but just letting you know it can be done on this phone no problem. It's the carriers that limit things by neutering the phone options to what THEY want you to have.
