Did you go from a HTC Desire to GS2? Need your help please :)

Hi I'm actually deciding betwen the HTC Sensation and GS2, both of which are coming to my netowrk in Australia at the end of the month. I've watched countless comparison videos of both phones online and now have a few qustions for someone who came from a HTC to a GS2...

1. Did you miss the widgets? Does the GS2 have the calander widget like the Desire? I used that a lot. What about the people widget does that GS2 have something similar? Do you have a photo frame widget? if not i'm sure that can be downloaded anyway. im sure most widgets can be downloaded from the market anyway.

2. What made you decide to get the GS2 over the Sensation?

3. I find the notification LED on my Desire really useful, i just have to look at it to see if I have any messages don't have to wake it up or unlock it. Does it bother you that the GS2 doesn't have it?

thats all i can think of at the moment, but if someone does answer who has had a desire and went to the GS2, please keep a look out on this thread in case i have a few more questions :)

You can easily get sense type widgets. I personally use calendar pad app and widget which I think is much better than the htc one. You can actually see your entries on the 4x4 widget.

The sgs2 has a better photo frame widget that you can resize. You can also set it up to constantly change photos like a slideshow.

The sgs2 has the super AMOLED plus screen which is even better than the desire and much better than the sensation particularly with regards to contest and colors and visibility in sunlight .

The lack of led does not bother me. But you can get an app called NoLED if you are bothered.

Am very pleased with it and waited for ages for the right phone to replace my desire!

Well I went from a Desire to Galaxy S, and now have a Galaxy SII (and a Sensation), so while I didn't quite go from a Desire to an SGSII, I think I can speak to your questions.

Didn't miss the widgets. I use LauncherPro+, which basically has the same widgets with a very similar look (and you can skin LauncherPro's widgets to look just like the Desire ones). You can also replace the widgets from the Market piecemeal, stuff the Pure widget series is a good place to start. Best thing about not being on Sense is that you can use other scrolling widgets from the Market (can't in Sense, or at least I can't in my Sensation).

2. What made you decide to get the GS2 over the Sensation?

I have to give my Sensation back in a few weeks (loaner for review, I'm comparing the phones at blog.clove.co.uk), and I will be staying with my SGSII afterwards (if I'd liked the Sensation more I would have kept it and sold off my SGSII). Lots of reasons - more RAM, more storage, better screen overall, better CPU/GPU, better browser experience, better video player, better battery life, no lag.

3. I find the notification LED on my Desire really useful, i just have to look at it to see if I have any messages don't have to wake it up or unlock it. Does it bother you that the GS2 doesn't have it?

I never missed it much when I went to the original Galaxy S, most people find that they actually don't miss it if the feedback I see in forums is anything to go by. You can use the app NoLed to simulate one anyways (and hopefully someone is cooking up BLN support - uses the capacitive key backlights for notification lights).

thats all i can think of at the moment, but if someone does answer who has had a desire and went to the GS2, please keep a look out on this thread in case i have a few more questions :)

Fire away with the questions, lots of people able to help here.

Thanks for your replies, I think my decision has been made! I even just bought a cover and scrn protector on Ebay to cement my decision! :D

I missed the HTC stuff so much that I've decided to switch back.

You can find an equvalent of most of them in the market, but none of it works as good.
I used HTC for Cal, Music, Email, Contacts, Caller, Keyboard etc.

I have swiched from desire (amoled screen) to gs2
I buy galaxy s2 for 3 main reasons (1) for super amoled + screen with 4.27 screen great simply the best I can get. (2) The internal storage is 16GB nice to have in android coz I hate lover storage in desire is 500mb and available is only 148mb, u can’t get what u want in it. (3) Light weight and slim profile of the galaxy s2.
I like HTC sense more than any in available now. So my second choice is HTC sensation if I got super amoled + screen in that and internal storage more than 2 GB I will sale my s2 right now and get HTC sensation. If HTC will get super amoled + and internal storage 2GB it can beat Samsung with SENSATION all the way.

I just thought of another questions, can you use the forward facing camera to take self portraits? I take photos of my son and I to send to my husband when hes at work and that would come in handy to be able to see us both on screen before i take the photo. we always end up taking a few shots because either we're both not ready or i cant get both of us in the shot.

Yes, you can use the front facing camera for self-shots (just checked).

Sense is great n all, but its seriously bloated now - just takes too many system resources in the Sensation (only has about 100-150MB free RAM after boot, open a game like Gun Bros, browse in a non-stock browser using a few tabs, multitask and when you exit the app you have to wait for Sense to restart because its been killed to free RAM, very annoying).

yea i think thats one of the big things with my desire is the internal storage, i'm always two smal phone-stored apps away from getting that "phone storage low" notification
message on my pohone and its very annoying even tho almost every app that can be saved on the sd card is.

exactly the same situation i was..

things i miss about my desire:

1. weather animation - i'm a sucker when it comes to the way HTC makes its weather animations, especially i've updated to my desire to sense 3.0
2. widgets - just like the post above, there are many widgets that are like HTC's..but imho nothing comes close to the original
3. weight - i've always loved how the desire has this good weight feeling in my hands

things i don't..

1. abysmal internal storage - 'nuff said
2. speakers - the sounds quality really degrades on a higher volume

those being said..i will miss using my desire..it's the phone that introduced me to andy and will be forever grateful for it coming from 3GS..

Holyblood, how did you update your desire to 3.0? Do you have a link that you can post for me? I'm passing my desire onto my husband so if i can make it a bit better before i give it to him, i think he'd appreciate it. Did it take up too much internal storage?

Hey just got my SGS2 today and am busy installing apps :) I have just installed the Launcher Pro Plus. I made good use of the People widget on my Desire so I have paid for the unlocker for the Launcher Pro. But when I select the People widget and select my Family group, no contacts show up?? Has anyone else come across this or can help?
