How to play mpeg 2 .ts and/or .m2ts files on SGS2

five

Newbie
Hi,
I'm an Android beginner so please be patient.
How can I play (or is it even possible to play) mpeg 2 .ts files on the SGS2? The default player can't play them but it must be possible to install codecs to allow mpeg 2 to play.

Similarly is it possible to play .m2ts files?

Thanks

but .m2ts cannot play (on this or any other mobile that I'm aware of).

Why is that or why are you so certain? (excluding any encryption- I'm not talking about .m2ts taken from blu-rays or any other encrypted .m2ts)

Many .m2ts files are simply streams of h.264 video. The phone can easily handle h.264 no problem, why not in .m2ts form?

I tried a few and none of them worked, but perhaps some can if encoded right. I didn't try them after getting Dice Player either, which is much better than the stock player...

If you have any small samples you want to upload for me I can try them out.

Thanks for clarifying that. So its not a case of there being some fundamental incompatibility between Android and .m2ts.

I must take a look at Dice Player.

My upload speed ain't great. I'll see what I can do, but don't hold your breath!!. Thanks for the offer, though. :)

Seems Diceplayer has some support for this - they have a demo video showing it. I just tried a 720p m2ts file recorded on my FZ-100 and there is sound but no picture.

Interesting. I had a rummage around Market and couldn't see anything that suited my needs. (#1 Free, #2 no "Read phone state and identity" permission)

I think I will have to wait for VLC to come to Android :(

.mts is some new format that is all the rage now but I don't think any phone supports it.
I know VLC player (for PC) added support for it in the last year or so, and they are working on a version of VLC for Android, not sure when it will be out though, but I hope it supports all the same file types, keep your eyes peeled here for updates, although it seems multiple people are working it, or multiple components of it, it's a mess, so there's no particular thread to follow:

Damn! It has that stupid Phone ID permission .

I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and try to learn how to root my phone, install Droidwall and get some privacy back.

AFAIK .m2ts is a transport stream with h.264 as the codec used. Its usually used for HD content. Seeing as The SGSII has hardware support for h.264 it shouldn't be an issue for it.
