Eris to v2.x, when?

I'm breathless with hope from reading all of those. Thank you. :)

Speculation that the Eris will NEVER get 2.x are off base. We will get the newer OS it just a matter of when and never a matter of if. As of right now, I wouldn't start to get upset or even concerned until March 31st. If we don't have it by then and don't have a clear reason stated from a creditable source then it might be a time to get upset, but not really before then.

I do fear that some of the guesstimations that I and others have made have given people a reason to expect that an update is right around the corner. My thoughts on February 12th were only based on another member's contact with HTC where they stated that we should expect it by mid February. The person at HTC could have been talking about something else or just giving false hope.

For all the short-term headaches it may cause users and customer service to upgrade to 2.X, think of the long-term benefits to HTC. They developed the N1, that puts them, obviously, in a position to take a lead in developing 2.1-ready phones. It would be in their best interest to get as many of their Android devices as possible running on 2.1 (or whatever the newest version each device is capable of handling). The sooner they can move older phones away from older OS's and proprietary systems like the HTC exchange support, the sooner they can stop devoting resources to keeping those systems up. The fewer OSes among their family of devices, the better.

I definitely see your point, however, as to the tech-support nightmare that may cause. Personally, I don't care if I have to wipe everything off, I was under the impression that a 1.5-2.X upgrade couldn't happen OTA anyway (I've heard both that due to the way the install runs, the phone has to be connected to a computer during install, and that the file size would kill bandwidth if sent OTA en masse).

Then again, I don't use Exchange, and just let Google sync my life, so I guess that's an easy position for me to take :)

An HTC employee? Giving false hope?

Perish the thought. :D

Meanwhile, my hope is that the new software we get for the Eris is not that which I used on the Nexus One I had to return before getting the Eris; or at least that it's fixed since then, it was quite buggy, to say the least.

While I see your point there are others that say something different.http://www.cnet.com/8301-19736_1-10409482-251.html

One thing to be conscious of is that each of those blog postings likely stemmed from a couple sources. I just hope it was someone that is in fact in the "know" and not someone that thinks they know the business plans of Verizon.

I sure hope I get to eat crow on this. I wonder if it happens, how they will manage it and not severly tic off Eris owners that are unaware or unprepared for the update that potentially can ruin their Exchange relationship. Perhaps the brains at HTC are figuring out how the update will migrate the credentials to the native Exchange support. Meh, i'm just speculating anyway. Actually, I think I am borrowing trouble :)

Well, the lack of follow-up articles just means to me that the process is on-going and there is no dot to connect to at this particular point in time.

The dot will be the next press release of a day or week of delivery, I guess. Maybe a leak?

Those are all close to two months old. We have no follow-up reports on that. I believe it's coming, but you posted those to prove to that guy that it wasn't going to be shelved. After spending some time trying to get it to work, they may have given up on the project. Who knows?

The lack of follow-up articles is frustrating. But with all the problems the Droid is having, you can't eat your cake too. I'll live with a more functional phone and wait for the update to make it even better, if I have to.

I was trying to point out that HTC and Verizon have both stated that 2.x would be coming to the Eris, but since you want something more current....

Does today work for you?

I believe that the HTC executive said at the N1 event earlier this month that 2.1 would be coming. First - and authoritative source. Second -- only three weeks ago.

And if I remember correctly he used the word "soon". Thats not very elaborate but its better than nothing.

Yeah, I would not say they weren't coming due to a lack of updates in the press. If they said Q1, then I suspect that you wouldn't hear any updates unless that changed.

Hey, you're trying to convince that guy, not me. I know it's coming.

A lot of sites release leaked images of the OS running. For example, there would be pics of 2.1 clearly running on an Eris. Better than pics would be videos. There are sites dedicated to keeping track of this stuff. It's their job to find stuff like this out and they do it.

I already have 2.1, i'm excited about 5.6 1/2! Hopefully it should be be here by Saturday, don't shoot the messenger just something I overheard in my head.

I just talked to a person I know and trust over at big red and I was told to not expect it until end of March for 2.0 I'm okay with 1.5 but am as excited as everyone with the idea of 2.0

You trust him to know that we're getting 2.1, not 2.0, like most reports indicate?

OOOooooooo! 5.6 1/2!!! Is that the "real" Android Google has hinted about? I want that! And an app that will print real money too!

The LAST thing we need is more real money printers. We've already got people in Washington who are going completely overboard with that idea.

Sorry. Couldn't resist... :(

my SWAG is that the update will come March 26 (the last Friday of Q1). The only real question for Eris owners is - will it be 2.0 or 2.1?

I was at Verizon in Maryland and the tech man stated that the Iris is suppose to receive an update to the 1.6 OS update this we. My question whether it is 1.6 or 2.0 or 2.1 OS will it speed up the phone as far as moving from app to app and opening up pictures or videos from the SD card like the Moto Droid Does. Thanks

The Eris won't get 1.6. HTC decided to ignore 1.6 altogether and jump to 2.x. There have been mixed reports on whether it will actually be 2.0 or 2.1 though. Don't expect it any time real soon.

When I called my VZW store, the girl there said the same thing. She said the 1.6 had already been sent out and should reach me by next week as they slowly send it out. Back then, I thought she was just a ditz and knew nothing, but if they told you the same thing...it still might have no substance, but it must mean they had the same source of information, probably from VZW higher-ups.

And what is the real difference between 2.0 and 2.1? What does the N1 have, program wise, that the Droid doesn't?
