First things first this might be a little long winded, but I don't want to leave anything out. So I apologize in advance!
I have some questions about rooting/custom roms and additionally I would just like a straightforward opinion on if it's something that would be worth doing for me. I'm frustrated by the delay of the Bionic, especially since the GB update on my X has made it quite frustrating to use. I am looking for something to help ease the pain of another month with my X. So first things first, my primary question is: Should I root?
I only want to root if I stand to gain something substantial out of it. By this I mean:
1. I would like to try a custom rom if one exists that is stable and fast. And I mean more stable than stock GB in it's current state. I don't want to go through the trouble of rooting if I will be in the same position I am in now or even worse. But I also don't want to sacrifice too much to get this stability.
2. I use WatchDog, Juicedefender, and RealHDMI, all 3 of which have features that require root access. But are these features worth it?
Which brings me to my next question, from the bit of reading I have been doing on this forum about rooting, it would seem that by accepting the OTA GB update I've made the process for rooting much harder? So (and correct me if I'm wrong) my process would go something like this:
1. SBF back to stock
2. Root the stock rom
3. Install a custom rom
And finally to wrap all this up, here are my primary concerns about rooting:
1. I love my battery life since GB came out, I don't know what they did but it worked. I fear that a stable ROM will likely be froyo and I don't want to lose my juice (It's one of the more important smart phone features I need, I hate having to ration my phone use due to poor battery life)
2. My music player needs to work, I use it as an mp3 player almost as much as a phone (in it's current form, GB has made it barely useable for this, so this isn't as much as a concern with rooting as it is a concern that rooting won't fix it, so why bother)
3. I don't want to brick my phone. I hear this is near impossible these days if you are not a moron, but sometimes I can be
4. The camera needs to work. I've seen talk about the latest roms not having functionality in the camera. I'm all for phone tinkering but I don't want to lose major functionality in my phone just so I can wifi-tether for free (I use PDA net anyway)
5. My apps will suddenly stop working. I have a good amount of apps on my phone that I have come to rely on. It would be upsetting if I went through the root proccess and then suddenly they stopped working.
I know I said I was done but I reminded myself of something with that last part. Is there a place I can look at screenshots and/or video of all these custom roms running? I would like to make a more educated decision on which one to run if I do root, and the looks of the phone are a big selling point for me. I hear MUI or whatever is similiar to iPhone for example. So I want nothing to do with it
Anyway thank you in advance for taking your time to even read this long winded post. But I have been on the "should I root" fence ever since my OG Droid. But every delay on the bionic and every random reboot on my X pushes me closer and closer to finally doing it. I just want some re-assurance!

I tend to do stuff like that. Anyway, I'm basically just setting this Stock GB up the way I want it so I can back it up real quick and then start toying with other roms. So I have a new question. How to I back up basically an "image" of the phone state right now so that if I don't like a rom I try I can just put the phone right back in the exact state it's in now. Also, where can I find this darkslide rom?
