Root How Much MB Saved - Odexed vs. Deodexed 2.3.3??

scudder

Android Expert
Hello...

I'm getting tight with the internal memory on my EVO. I've culled the apps I'm not using and force-moved to the SD card what I've tested and comfortable with but I'm still tight on memory.

I originally installed the deodexed 2.3.3 ROM and I'm thinking I might not need the customization ability of that ROM. I understand the odexed footprint is smaller and was wondering what amount of memory I could recoup if I flash the odexed ROM?

Thanks!!

i do not think that there is that much of a difference. it might be like 20-30mb but i never compared the two so do not know the actual difference. you should try an aosp rom. they are really small. or get a class 6 or higher card and partition it.

Given that...if I remember correctly...I only started with about 130(??) mb free after a wipe and install of the deodexed ROM, 20-30 mb is a nice gain.

Could you expand on the comment about partitioning a card? I presume in that circumstance that most/all of the "internal-only" apps are installed on or run on the card partition? How is that different and/or better than force-moving apps to the SD card? I'm just not familiar with the partitioning option...

Thanks!

the apps2sd that froyo introduced only moves part of the app to the sd card. a lot of the app still remains on the phone. when you partition your card and use a2sd, the entire app is moved and symbolic link is created to trick the phone into thinking that the apps are on the phone rather then the card. but you need to have two things for it to work. you can get a rom that has a2sd built in or you have to run a script to move the apps, called darktremor a2sd.

also when you partition your card, it is recommended that you have a class6 or higher.

I had read a little bit a while ago about darktremor a2sd. How does that compare to the app2sd function of Titanium (not the "stock" froyo app2sd...or is that what you're referring to: there is darktremor and then "all the rest")??

Also, can you expand a bit on the process and requirements (other than a class 6 card) for the partitioning option? Is this something I can swap out right now and implement once I know how to do it...or does this entitle a wipe and clean start because some of my app2sd moves at the moment might be fragmented?? Any links you know of as a guide to partitioning?

Thanks as always!

im not to sure exactly what titanium does when it moves apps. but my guess is that it is similar to apps2sd. darktremor is a script that runs and you can command it via terminal emulator or script manager. [Script][A2SD]Darktremor 2.7.5.3 Beta 04 [Evo] (01/29/2011) - xda-developers

i used this guide to partition my card:[GUIDE][07/07/11]How to Partition your SD Card - xda-developers

Thanks as always for your replies!! However, as usual, answer beget more questions :D...

I also found an apps2sd a2sd+ thread here in the forums:

http://androidforums.com/desire-all...sd-partitions-updated-10th-august-2011-a.html

Specifically scroll down to the "Is it any better in Gingerbread?" FAQ question. I am confused by the answer...Gingerbread is BETTER?? Or does Dark Tremor move MORE/is better? It appears further down in the above link FAQ under "Are there other options when rooted?" it specifically mentions that Titanium can move apps to SD card but does NOT utilize a partition (and that clarifies your previous thoughts on what Titanium does in your reply)...so I was wondering why there was reference to Gingerbread??

The above Android Forums link also mentions that apps on the SD card need to put back into the internal memory. I've got QUITE a premium on my internal storage and I'll have to do a BUNCH of jockeying to do that!! :( If I free up some space, can I simply use my Titanium backups??...reinstall app and data from the backups into the internal memory as "needed" and then have darktremor do its thing??

There is also mention of specific ROMs where the darktremor script works...and some/many STOCK ROMs where it will not work. I flashed the rooted Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM (deodexed at the moment)...will darktremor work with this ROM?? Will it work if I enable the init.d as described in the following link?:

[HOWTO] Enable init.d on stock *rooted* Desire roms - xda-developers

WOW, I'm getting technical and in over my head!! :(

Lastly, in a coincidental/semi-related way, I received an odd message this evening attempting to use Titanium to move an app to my SD card (NOT force-moving an app...dev implementing ability to move the app if I choose) and got a the following message in Titanium:

Sorry Android 2.2/Froyo only supports a maximum of 123 apps on the SD card

The problem is...I'm using a GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 STOCK ROM!!

I posted a new thread about this very issue because, though related where this thread has lead to, the issue may not be found here and might benefit someone else if easily found in a separate post:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...d-app-limited-123-but-im-running-2-3-3-a.html

THANKS AGAIN for the info!!

ok i will try to answer your long ass  questions as best as i can. lol

Darktremors a2sd moves more than gingerbread does. the only thing that s left on the internal memory is a sym link that tricks the phone into thinking the appis on the phone. so a2sd is better then gingerbread. at the time that was written it did not work all of the time. it did have its bugs, but even though it is in beta, it should still work.

they are actually similar in how they move apps to the card. not sure what you question is.

yes you can do that. i would use tb to back your apps then bit by bit install and move with dt.

There is also mention of specific ROMs where the darktremor script works...and some/many STOCK ROMs where it will not work. you know not sure what support the new gingerbread roms have now. i actully think that most roms now have a2sd built in. i'm on mik3d b1 and i never had to use dt. i have 153 apps all on my card! and i still have 200 mb of internal memory left! of course i have a 16g class 10 card.

not sure maybe they just did not update the error to say gingerbread. i never heard of that limit set.

Ha!! :D:D YOU'RE THE BEST!!!

Thanks for the info...

And with my comment about Gingerbread and my question. Didn't mean to confuse:

they are actually similar in how they move apps to the card. not sure what you question is.
In the link I mentioned, there was a section that said "Gingerbread was better" but then further mention that Gingerbread (obviously) doesn't use a partition for its app2sd functionality. I was wondering WHY there a mention of Gingerbread being "better" but the post might have been referring to a comparison with Froyo...

Thanks again!! Will do some more looking into this...

So I went back to a specific post in the link I mentioned above http://androidforums.com/desire-all...updated-10th-august-2011-a-6.html#post2845712 where a list of ROMs was provided. This Android Forums link and the cited XDA forum link (Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! [UPDATED: 12/8] - xda-developers) both mention using the DESIRE phone...

Dumb question (...like I have to PREFACE that??! :D:D)...do the ROMs at this "Desire" link work with the EVO?? I'm just reading what happens to be a post in a "Desire" forum right?? These are NOT Desire-only ROMs correct?

See what I meant about dumb question??

Also, notwithstanding an answer to my question above, can anyone point me in a direction of a STOCK 2.3.X Gingerbread ROM with the a2sd+/dark tremor functionality built in?? I looked at the XDA list above and the Gingerbread based ROMs and really couldn't tell which, if any, were just "stock" plus the a2sd+ ability :(

THANKS!!

NOOOOO they do not. never flash a rom that is not designed for your phone. it will seriously brick your phone. those are roms specfically for the desire. sure there are cm7 and miui but those are their version for the desire phone.

try mikg2.45. it has a2sd support and it is a great rom. but if you want to try a sense 3.0 goodness try mik3d. this rom is amazing!!!!!! i keep going back to it. and i have 153 apps all on my card with 200 mb still left in the internal memory. check it out.

Um....ah....I knew that!!! I was just asking for the OTHER people!! :D:D Actually, now that I think about it, was bit of a stupid question. Might have to do with the fact that most of the time I'm asking these questions is WAY past my bedtime!

Have wanted to check out those ROMs you suggested...will do so soon. Thanks...
