Google to buy Motorola Mobility

Posted earlier on Google Mobile Blog. They are going to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12B. Sounds like good news to me.
 
Here's my 3 reasons why this is great news:

1. That patent rubbish will finally be levelled
2. Google can start setting a benchmark for low,mid, and high tier phones for other manufacturers to follow
3. Android and Chrome together, as one! I can see the Atrix's "laptop feature" being properly extened in future phones - imagine having android on your phone, and then plug into the laptop dock for Chrome OS! It'll be awesome.
 
They will basically just be the new Nexus phones and get all the latest updates first.

I wonder what Apples response to this will be because it's kind of a big deal. :D
 
I don't see Google as one to abandon there other supporters such as HTC and Samsung. Google may be able to offer a better experience with Motorola but it will be up to HTC and Samsung to allow that same experience (unlocked bootloaders, stock android etc...). Mind you that some people out there do prefer Sense and touchwiz to stock android.
 
I love Motorola devices. I really hope that this will be a benefit for them in terms of Android. I would love to see a Nexus Prime be released by Moto, first to ICS, and more but I doubt the Prime will happen.

Unfortunate, for certain, but look at what AAPL has done to put the choke on Samsung in Germany. It's a long 27 years since I watched that Macintosh commercial and thought them to be the leader for openness; they are now nearly as closed as the bleak Soviet drone that the hammer destroyed. Good luck Google.
 
This has to simply be for the patent wars and little else, as Motorola Mobility has 17,000 granted patents in the wireless arena, plus another 7,500 pending. This would be great for countersuits by Google against Apple and Microsoft and others.

Motorola Mobility will continue to be run as a separate company, as mentioned in several articles, so much that Motorola will also have to bid, with no inside advantage, to build the next Nexus phone. I think this is why we see HTC, Sony, LG and Samsung all welcome this acquisition news... and they all mentioned that it's about defending Android and its partners.

Google had to be discussing this acquisition with all of Android hardware partners.
 
A complete waste that was totally avoidable.
As stated already not a dime went to innovation or research but to fend off patent attacks.

Now this is what is starting to bother me..
Google already has a VERY dominant position in mobile and is light years ahead of everyone else.
This is another vehicle in which to solidify dominance.
What will Google do now that it has a hardware manufacturer that has most of the patents on cell tech?
What competitor will they try to kill, if any?

Competition is a good thing, and what I now fear is that Google may attempt to kill it.
As much as I detest the way Apple treats its sheep we actually do need them to keep innovation going.

I totally agree. Apple is the worst right now.

I have an iPad 2. I cannot use my Nook or Kindle app on my iPad 2 to buy eBooks in the app (stupendous), or to create a new user in the app. :eek:

Then there's the whole flash thing. Yea theoretically it was just mildy annoying. But it got to be really irritating over the weekend. I was out shopping with the family, wanted to look up Walmart's local ad to do some price look up, and thanks to "no Flash support" on my iPad 2, I could not view the local ad. I was really wishing I had a 3G Android tablet. Right now I only have a wifi ViewSonic G-tablet that I use at home.

Down with Apple!!! :mad: They really innovated the smartphone / tablet space, but now they are putting a stranglehold on it that makes me ill. I plan to acquire a 3G Android tablet to replace my iPad 2 this holiday season.

honestly, oracle does not stand a chance with the java thing. They have to prove that google stole the code and was not given any approval by sun microsystems to use it. Let me shoot that down right now.

As for the motorola thing, saw that coming. Motorola kind of blew up as a company last year, and the pieces where getting grabbed by ever quarter. It is nice now that apple and microsoft will have to face google directly. Watch for lawsuits to be dropped.
 
I just can't decide if i want to call it Motoooogle or Googorola.

The latter sounds too much like gorgonzola if you ask me.
