Google Buys Motorola Mobility

Well, this is interesting. Guess Motorola just became #1 Android handset. Can we say unlocked bootloaders and stock android?

Google to Buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 Billion - WSJ.com

What? Wow! This is awesome!

I sincerely hope that this will end all MotoBlur nonsense.

And this will give Google all of Moto's patents and give it a fair fight against sue-happy Apple.

As for how it makes me view the Bionic, it kind of discourages me from buying it. Unless the Bionic was built having this Google deal in mind, which by all accounts it hasn't, it will be one the last phones to have propriety Blur garbage, bloatware, maybe even PenTile screen displays.

As for the handsets down the line (Dinara, etc.?), they might as well be Nexus Primes. They will most likely have stock, vanilla Android, making them super fast, unlocked bootloaders, they will definitely be first in line when updates come out, and all with Moto's quality builds.

But I don't know if I can wait that long. Hopefully Google will make some sort of announcement soon detailing its plans.

Well from what I have read, Google will operate Motorola Mobility as a seperate entity, but I don't see how they keep MotoBlur (thank goodness). I agree about the future Nexus phones, they will almost certainly be Motorola phones. Which as stock android, I will be ALL OVER. Very happy to hear this news.

They haven't really been super fast on bringing out Nexus phones, but that could be because no carriers would carry them. If Google can't get it's contracts in line for locking up the apps that the carriers want, then this is a wasted purchase and bad for the phone market in general. If they can, then the stuff we hate like locked up bootloaders will be finished.

I doubt this will turn out to be a wasted purchase, unless it operates Moto strictly as a separate entity, meaning business as usual with no Google input, which I can't fathom.

If anything, this will give Google tremendous influence on getting what it wants from Verizon (no bloatware, etc.). Moto is a cash cow for Verizon. It would be stupid not to work together on giving the customers what they want. Google has always had awesome ideas, just not the carriers, hence the whole original nexus fiasco. I think that will change in the near future, and it will be much, much better for the industry overall.

Might not want to put too much into the purchase for now, since this is more to do with strategic long term position for patents & technology. Still, makes sense there will be some impact for future devices and updates.

This should help expand Google's patent inventory as well since Motorola holds several key patents. While Google has every right, I'm worried that Google might start favoring Motorola for exclusive releases (like the Xoom) and leaving other carriers to fight for the update scraps. Apple has been attacking the carriers lately, they are probably ill-equipped to go after Google. It would be interesting to see if Google could protect Motorola devices if Apple continues their "innovative" attempt to competition.

Motorola for the next Nexus? I'm in. Love Motorola's hardware. Beats Samsung's plastic, and HTC's stability problems.

I have waffled on the Bionic lately again with news of the Revolution 2. IF the Nexus Prime is indeed a Moto phone....hmmmm...lol Sorry, dont wanna sound like a Moto fanboy...but reception and battery life are my only wants/needs. Everything else comes 2nd.

I might as well just say it....I plan on waiting forever for my next phone....

Jroc still lurking on AF, refreshing the page on the Motorola Teleporter Prime

Dude, seriously, you're going to finally get set on an awesome phone, and while you're waiting, another one will be rumored and/or announced that will be even better. . . by the time you finally decide, you'd have been able to upgrade to that one already.

It's an exercise in futility!

I've finally decided to wait ONLY until August 29. If the SGSII is coming to Verizon with at least the same specs as in Europe plus LTE, that's the one I'm getting. If not, Bionic it is. I don't care if the internet explodes with unsubstantiated rumors that the Prime is coming out September 15.

You truly have to draw a line in the sand to succeed against the onslaught of choices..

And usually my line in the sand is about two days after my upgrade eligibility..

I'm not much for patience, but I do start researching about 5 months before my upgrade (I'm not very good at not torturing myself, either).. so I'm usually about ready to snap by then..

My upgrade is in November, which I'm actually kind of thankful for.. if it was in August or Sept, I think I'd lose it with all the "supposed" options..

lol...Naw I'm pretty much set on getting the Bionic. My girlfriend is getting a lil more tech savvy with my Droid X1 and wants to know when can she use Tango. She's with T Mobile and will be getting an Android phone with a front facing camera soon.

Good times ahead...heh heh heh.....

But I am set on getting it. At the same time I waited all this time....almost got the DX2...Droid 3 looks nice....really woulda snatched up the Droid 3 if it had LTE...whats a few more months?

I'm just in waffle, politician mode right now. And very happy about this deal with Motorola and Google.

Yep, it will. My guess is the purchase will be allowed with some concessions on google's part.
You could also argue that without this purchase, Apple could become an effective monopoly. This would be GOOD for competition.

Don't be surprised if there are no regulations whatsoever.

I'm guessing that he made the post after some really hush hush insider info that the deal was already being negotiated....

It has been fun to read the analysis and articles written on this. There are very clearly two schools of thought on the merger, and I have to wonder if the apple/android fandom is driving the two different storylines. Either the article takes at face value the statements by all the android handset manufacturer CEOs, that this is a good thing for android to protect it from the over-reach of apple (Android-supporting writer/editor), or that it could cause discord in the ranks of the other handset manufacturers and could hurt Google (apple-supporting writer/editor). I have to say, I was fairly neutral about Apple until the whole patent lawsuit business started. Yesterday's release of the doctored photo of Galaxy Tab just may have been the last straw for me ever considering an Apple product. How dare they. But then I had a very comforting thought. Steve Jobs has been an oracle for Apple, putting them into products which made them a killing, the guy is a genius, and has a great vision of the future. So what does he see now that is causing him to guide Apple toward relentless patent trolling (thanks tehsusenoh!)? They can't compete, they are losing, and are gonna lose. The problem isn't that Android stole Apple's ideas, it is that they have improved on them, and Apple's business model won't allow them to keep up. They are about to be relegated to second fiddle, just like they are with Microsoft in the PC arena. And they know it.
