Root [CDMA] HTCDEV.com bootloader unlock: s-on with CWM + root access

Go to hboot, navigate to fastboot, select it - it should say fastboot USB - then issue from PC -

fastboot oem writesecureflag 0

Then:

fastboot reboot-recovery

The second command will save you having to go thru a power sequence to get back to this screen.

(Sorry, I got called away at the crucial moment! :()
 
Ok I did the "fastboot oem writesecureflag 0" and got:

So, I did some checking as I'm sure you did - not seeing yet why that last command failed.

Meanwhile - did you use the fastboot method to install CWM?

I tried installing both recoveries through Fastboot and didn't get any glaring errors (I believe it said Ok and that it was done). When I tried to install CWM through the other method it goes through trying to load it for 2 seconds and says some text about it being the wrong img file before it quickly disappears and goes back to the menu.
 
Well - no harm's been done. Changing thread title until we get square info to further the effort.

Appreciate the effort - fwiw - I'm with you, and I'm not giving up on this.

It's not specific to your phone.

The Sensation gang in Europe, who are supposedly fully supported by HTC for this - are reporting the exact same issues.

I'll bet it will take only a short while for this to sort out.
 
Ok sounds good...thanks for the help. I just wish I had looked through the stock recovery first to see if that was usable.
 
Disregard this post. Brain fart moment.

So it appears that HTC's definition of unlocking the bootloader is to write the string "unlocked" on the HBOOT screen :)

Recovery aside, did anyone see if they could mount /system read/write? From adb shell or a terminal emulator, type:

mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p23 /system
then type:

mount
is the system partition rw?

I'm going to guess that if HBOOT is reporting S-ON, the NAND protection is still there....

Yep, their web updates often lag their actual moves. I knew that, and knew that would unlock, that's why I was confident to post this thread.

They say to seek help on the support section at HTC - Mobile Phones, Smartphones, Cell Phones, PDAs but I've not seen a lick about this there yet.

PS - I've sent them a tweet asking for help.
 
I'm still a little nervous.. Maybe ill stick with revolutionary? I just dont know which way to turn ATM. I wanna be able to flash roms if not now later.. I flashed my PSP ROM 100 times or more so I don't know why this should be much different..

Or someone will figure this hTc thing out.....

If you haven't updated yet, use revolutionary, it works.

Then apply a custom rom or today's stock rooted rom - I have a link to it in a nearby thread.

Yep, dollar sign is correct.

Some guy over at XDA said he was able to get a CWM recovery to stick and will post a link to which one he used when he gets home...so I'm in a holding pattern waiting for that (although I hope he doesn't post it right before a new episode of Burn Notice comes on in 30 mins or I'm going to be really distracted :p)

Hopefully HTC will figure it out. Did they really not expect people to want to flash custom recoveries? Makes me want to browse the Sensation forums to see if they can do this without a hitch and flash recoveries.
 
I'm starting to think that this unlock won't allow us to install custom roms but do everything else when rooted. I hope that's not the case but it's looking that way to me.

If that were true...shouldn't there be a way for me to get superuser permissions right now? I need a working recovery to get to that point though so for the moment...I/we can't even get that far.
If it were true...it wouldn't be the end of the world for me anyway because all I realllllly want is Wireless Tether.

Good luck with the HTC branded root process. Quick question I read all posts but other than the folks who have been waiting for the HTC S OFF what would be some of the benefits of using HTC's Root over Alpharev? Just curious trying to understand the process as a whole Alpharev vs HTC.

And - how does one intend to install su without recovery?

OK - you could attempt the su install via the Market.

Doomstang, you might give that a shot.

Right now the implied benefit is that anyone who has taken the update - AlphaRevX no longer works - they changed the bootloader.

And, I suppose for some, a root from the manufacturer is philosophically attractive.

Otherwise, unlocked is unlocked, s-off is s-off, superuser access is root - those things will get you anywhere, regardless of how achieved. ;)
