$299 for this phone? Destined to fail.

I had all but decided on skipping this phone and waiting for prime, vigor, or gs2 but this seals it. $299 for a phone that will be surpasses by 3 phones in about a month at the same price? That is absurd. I was really excited for this phone at one point but this completely kills it. If it were $199 and had simultaneous voice/data I might still consider the bionic. As is, this phone is dead to me. I can only assume many others will feel the same.

no way the bionic would be $199, especially since its the first dual core 4g lte phone on verizon. i was hoping for $250 but am definitely expecting it to be $300.

If someone wants a Motorola phone and only a Motorola phone....its impossible for it to be dead...lol

A few things puts them at the top of my list for needs, wants. Wasnt expecting it to be cheaper. Should the Charge have been cheaper since the TBolt is the only LTE phone that can do simu voice/data over 3G? (The Bionic can do it over LTE; 3G voice - data over LTE)

All 4G phones from VW have been priced at $299 at release...so your argument about wanting it $199 is merely a moot point. Do we all wish it were going to be $199? Sure, but I think most of on here would agree that $299 is the logical price point for VW and MOTO.

Still, I too will wait to see what the Vigor will offer, and then make a decision on the two.

$299 is acceptable for me.

My rationale: I paid $199 with a contract renewal for my Motorola DROID on 6 Nov 2009. That was then, this is now. This phone has a lot going for it, and I'm willing to pay the premium to get ti on the day it is released.

Shoot...I wanted the Droid Incredible so bad, I paid the full retail price of that thing. I think it was like $560.

Wait a week or so and then 3rd party retailers will have it cheaper. You do realize the 32gb iphone is 299 and thats only 3g, no dual core, no lte, and the biggest thing no way to expand the memory. Come on did you really expect it less than $299? if so you have got to be high.

What are you going to bitch about when those other 3 are the same price if not more?

It just seems ridiculous to have the phone priced at $299 when 3 better phones that will be out around a month after it's release will prob be the same price. I have no prob paying $299 for a Vigor, Prime, or GS2. I do have a problem paying that for the bionic with no voice & data, and lower all around specs. Yes the Charge was $299 but at least in had a few months in the sun. The Bionic won't even have a month if the Oct. 5th date holds for Vigor.

You don't know for certain that the other 3 phones are going to be any better overall, or actually perform better in tests. You should simply wait and see before ruling the Bionic out (like myself). Those phones may lack certain features that the Bionic does have, hence you'll +/- for all. There is no mention of release dates for those other than the Vigor. They may not even be out until early next year for all we know.

That's exactly the reason you just gotta go for a phone. If all we ever did was "oh look, there is a better one next month" we'll never get new phones. I made up my mind, the Bionic it is, I don't care if 1-2 months later some super phone with double its specs comes out ... if I would, after those 1-2 months there would be another even more super phone coming out.

The wireless world is an endless cycle. Once an awesome phone comes out, another, even better one is announced.

With that said, I am getting the Bionic on release day. Wether I have to pay $299 or $250 I don't care. (Even though, $250 would be nicer, but I know its not gonna happen)

Actually I partly agree with OP. For some folks, 299 is steep price to pay right away without checking other phones coming soon after Bionic. I know it's always like this in shopping wireless devices. Always something better is in the pipeline. But in this case we are looking at only a few months of window. Earlier this year a lot of folks got Tbolt right away when it's released as first LTE phone and quite a bit of them regretted it later.

If you are all set to get Bionic no matter what, that's fine. But we can't blame others opting to check out other potent phones for a few more months.

No one feels the same... I doubt there will be ANY android phone that will be LTE and have as good spec as Bionic for a while.

I am guessing there is a specific reason why Bionic got delayed this long. Research & Development. Other manufacturers would have hard time matching Bionic with LTE and same spec with such short R&D time.

And thats what people thought when the "original" Bionic was introduced at CES ... now look where that got us. The problem with speculations is that releases can always change; classic example: Bionic.

In that few months window phones will be delayed, and by that time something else is "just a few months away" and the prices will just stay at $299+.

So no matter how you slice the cake, if you wait for the "better" one all the time, you'll never get a new phone.

Right, but now with the Bionic launching in September, it's too close to the October/Black Friday November time period to throw yourself into wishful thinking that the next best thing isn't coming soon.

With the Samsung (Nexus?) Prime rumored to be coming out in October, with Ice Cream Sandwich long rumored to be coming out in October (Coincidence? I think not), and the big announcement from Samsung in exactly 10 days, this $300 price tag is a major turn-off to me.

Now, many of us here have OG Droids that are on life support and will probably go ahead and buy the Bionic on Day 1. I'm not one of them. I think I'm going to wait and see what is announced until, say, October 1. If nothing is announced, then I'll have had plenty of time for the Bionic's bugs and issues to be widely proclaimed so I can make an informed decision.

I just think that we shouldn't be so heavy handed in saying that this $300 is justified because it will be the best phone for months and months and months. It just sounds like wishful thinking, and more like you're "hoping" that it will be the best, not really "knowing" anything (and I don't mean you, thatguy188, I'm talking in general).

I'm leaning more and more towards waiting. I probably would have paid $300 in May. 8 months late and multiple hot phones probably coming soon because of the heavy shopping season?

Eh, I think not.

how do you know that any of those will in fact LTE??

It took Bionic this long for a special reason. R&D for LTE. get around battery issues and such. i seriously doubt any of those will have LTE especially because LTE is so limited to few carriers and regions.

They prob just began R&Ding for LTE phones. meaning not coming out till next year.

The android competition is very intense these days like never before. Honestly do you think other guys were just sitting back while Bionic has been in the work at Moto? It took so long for Bionic because the original one with tegra2 was canceled and they switched to OMAP4 and developing their own LTE chip. It doesn't necessarily mean it will take similar time period for others as well.

If anything, Samsung, LG, HTC started dual core LTE at least several months ago. I'm pretty sure we will see couple of more dual core LTE phones from those three big guys within this year. Vigor and Revo 2 are almost certainly among them.

fact that all LTE phones have similar problems tells me that it would require some significant R&D to get it right.

Otherwise, we would have seen LTE dual core by now because as you say "competition is strong"

LTE is not dominant yet. and not wide spread. It simply does not warrant all out R&D from every other manufacturers

LTE is not wide spread yet, but that's the future of wireless cell network and major guys are well aware of it.

Moto announced Bionic way too early before it's ready and caused this perceived long delay while others didn't say much on it until they get close to launching it. Whether you believe or not, others started working on it several months ago as well if not earlier than Bionic. Bionic won't hold its edge more than a month at most.

anything to back that up?? No offense, but you have no idea how it is perceived by the top dogs at the Samsung,LG and etc. Ofc i dont either.

but just looking at current state of the market, it is perfectly reasonable for them to hold back on dual core LTE phone as of right now. New LTE chip is being developed and will be available for all manufacturers next year. Why would they ALL rush in and spend tons on it now?

Well, looks like you have't been following IT medias very well recently. There are plenty of sources if you are willing to search yourself. You can also ask any major IT media reporters, editors about it if they also think Bionic will be the only dual core LTE this year. I can find some for you if you wish.
Also have you not heard of HTC vigor, LG revolution 2, Samsung Celox, Nexus Prime? Prime is a little uncertain, but other three are most likely coming in Fall, which means they should have been in the work several months. Time will tell on this pretty soon...
