Do you have to download roms and kernels to computer then transfer to SD card or can you just put directly to card from phone

I almost always download straight to my phone and haven't run into any issues (yet). Just make nandroid backups and you'll be fine.

I don't think I've ever used my computer to download roms or kernels. I download them directly to my phone. Then when I go to 'install zip from sd card', all my downloads are in my downloads/ folder

I create folders on my SD card called AARoms and AAKernels that way I can drop them in those folders with root explorer and not have to worry about scrolling through a bunch of crap to find them when it's time to flash. That way, both are at the very top of my list.
