Root Tethering

Whats the APN patch? I was all set to root for pretty much wireless tether only, like I had on my DG2, then I read the wifi tether is not working. Anyone wireless tether on the D3? If so how? Thanks.

Wireless tether doesn't work for me, using 2.0.7 as reported by another poster. I launch the wifi tether, and my laptop could see not see the wireless network.

I'm wondering if anyone has a method to tether, wireless or wired, other than EasyTether. I got EasyTether to work on personal laptop, but didn't work on work laptop while little network icon looked like it was trying to fetch an IP - I suspect blocked by Cisco Security Agent firewall software that's difficult for me to get around. Having a tether method that doesn't require a PC side app might help but not sure. Need internet solution for work laptop for the 5 years I'll be without power due to Irene....

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Have you tried Barnacle Wifi tether?

I think the issues is lower level than an app, hence the only current real way around is the radio level edit, posted at XDA (a very risky edit, BTW, since easy to kill the radio if not careful).

All devices from this point forward could be policed the same (via the actual chip) and the current way around will probably be "fixed" in an update. Still it is better than how At&t is handling it. People that get caught have been losing their unlimited plans. Not sure if this is for all people that got "caught", but At&t have warned about it.

Just out of curiosity, anyone who has Wireless Tether WORKING, did you do the TBH-inspired wireless tethering hack? If so, that's why it works.

So where I live I can't have internet (weird story) so I wanted to root my phone to tether it. I bought the D3 about 2 weeks ago and now I see there's a root. I did it, root successful and superuser is installed.... but now what? I know nothing, I mean NOTHING about rooting or the other jargon you all use for "unlocking the power of your phone." Was hoping someone could give me a tut or link to "what to do with your rooted phone" or something of that nature.

Just would be nice to know what I should do, i.e. "Go download *example A app and remove this, this and this. Then download this app and tweak this this and this. Basically I did the root because of the potential for greatness but I don't know how to use it or what to do with it. Like I hear people say it's great to get rid of bloatware... um ok, where's that? New guy, please help...thanks

One more question. I see people talk about "unrooting" If you were to unroot before you took your phone in for one reason or another to a carrier are you ok or is it, "once you've rooted, your warranty is void indefinitely?"

Also, what kind of things do I need to protect myself. I understand that you can really mess things up doing this so is there some sort of device restore app I can download or something I need to help manage things in case I make a mistake?

The only option for wifi tether is the radio level edit, which due to your lack of experience is best left alone. There are methods you can search about for wired or bluetooth tether, but those methods only work on non-Android devices.

There is no unroot ATM, but the screening process for returns does not look to see if you are rooted and most would not know what to look at in the first place. For now, anyway. Perhaps at some point there will be a network "spy" app where VZW can tell what device and if it is rooted or not.... Actually, I think that exists already (from an ability stand point).

So is the tether for D3 just something that has to be developed like the root itself or is it just not possible in terms of just downloading an app? My friend (who is as clueless as myself about this stuff) has a droid x that she did the z4 root and then googled wifi tether and dl'd that app and she can tether to her laptop with it. I dl'd the same app (both versions) and both connect to my laptop and show full signal strength with 11.0 MBpS but with the yellow triangle over the bars. When I hover the cursor it just cycles saying "identifying network" I then clicked the properties of the connection and then details and everything seemed in order except for the IPv4 and IPv6 were null.

Also still looking for the guidelines on what to even do with a rooted phone. Thanks Rush.

Here is the link to the wireless tether hack...please be careful

I'm willing to do the radio hack for wifi tether, but before I do, how do I get it back to original settings? Factory reset?

(this is just a bump, as I'm culling tethering posts from the big "Root achieved.." thread and have created this new Tethering thread)

You could just extract the 128 digit series and save it with the 4 digit code used to extract it in a text file on your computer. It would be very easy to do once you see the program. The whole hack was easy to do if you follow the step by step instructions.

I would also like to try this hack. Seems very simple. Does anyone have a link to the motorola program to change the settings? I would really appreciate a pm of it or pm me at all and I can give ya my email addy.

In the step by step instructions, they give the name of it. I simply Googled that name and found a MediaFire download. It was quite easy! :)

its all in the link i posted earlier...

The only draw back I have experienced and read others experiencing is sometimes, maybe 1 time a day, a couple days a week, the 3g will cut out. A simple reboot fixes it tho.

The current radio hack will probably get "corrected" in the next VZW update. Bet on it. If users have not noticed (that have rooted), VZW have went out of their way (with Moto chip assistance) to stop them thar' pesky no-contract wifi users, once and for all.

I think the radio hack is a slippery slope, so waiting for threads down the road from users that did the hack and have issues (hope does not happen, but VZW seems dtermined to kill wifi tethering that they are not paid for- on top of what they already get).

Man that is such a load of crap. I seriously do not understand how me using data that I paid for is any different from my phone vice using it through my laptop. I don't have internet in my house and doing research on my phone is really tedious. I would love to just hook it up basically for the support of a bigger screen and keyboard is really all I'm wanting. It's not like doing something on my computer through my phone uses MORE data than solely on my phone......

Ive tried it all - Barancle, all the different apk's at code.google.com, but the only thing that worked was that radiocomm hack. It works perfect, you get to use the verizon app which has access control.

Its really simple, I would try the radiocomm hack over at XDA.

Actually came back to thank screenamie's posts for the xda links today. Droid 3 is perfect for me - my Transformer tablet has internet where ever I go and stays seamlessly connected for an always on experience without any extra costs (which if I pay for unlimited internet, I should get, not 20$ per 2 gigs to the tablet).

With the tethering fix, I feel the D3 is a forever phone for me, kinda of like D1 when it came out. I cannot thank you enough screennamie - my Android experience is perfect ATM.
