Google Maps, uninstall or move to SD?

Hi,

I've had this phone for less than two weeks. I have downloaded a lot of apps and I'm already looking for ways to free up internal storage.

All of the apps that can be moved to SD, I have moved them there.

Internal storage is 61.24% used according to Android App Manager (178 MB total, 69 MB available, 109 MB used).

Right now the biggest hog is Google Maps (11 MB) and I can neither uninstall it nor move it to the SD card (using Apps2SD).

Is there any way of moving to SD or uninstalling Maps without going root?

Thanks.

I installed an 8gb SD card so I have lots of room. However, some items cannot be moved, by design I guess.

Also, where is the best place to find already reviewed apps?

Thanks in advance.....

Unfortunately, some apps cannot be moved to the SD card. However, if you wanted to take a leap of faith and root your phone, most roms give a lot more internal memory. For example, a clean boot of the bumblebee rom gives you 170mb of internal memory

Michael323,

If you are not using Google Maps, uninstall the updates (doing uninstall won't uninstall the app of course, but it will uninstall all of the updates). Then open the Market on your phone and go to your apps list. Open Google Maps and untick the box for auto update. :p

If you just want more space on the phone, the only way that really does work is to root the phone and use Link2SD.

This will void the warranty on the phone, if that is a consideration (wasn't for me--I was planning to buy a new one if I made a brick of it.)

Computers have hated me since 1976 and the rooting went just fine, so you don't need to be afraid if you can follow written instructions and read thoroughly before proceeding.

You cannot however move google maps because it is considered a system app and moving it to the SD could cause your phone to become unstable.

you can still use google maps with the updates uninstalled... you just lose a few features that were added with updates since whatever version came with the phone

But if all your new apps are going to a nice, big sd card, who cares?:p

I don't even care if the VM bloatware is there, as long as it isn't using up space I need for my own stuff.:D

Yeah, my memory "left" keeps going between 20mb and 40mb. I'm always deleting apps I don't use, or looking for apps that do the same thing but are smaller. I just hide the bloatware I don't use (still takes space). I switched browsers to Xscope (smaller than most)... or you can just use default to save the most space.

I use a lot of links through the browser to replace individual apps that just take up space (Facebook, Amazon, Craigslist, Yelp, to name a few); Xscope opens a mobile page on most, but gives you a "Desktop" option. I found many of the individual apps worse than using actual browser links. Long pressing back will exit from Xscope and automatically clear cache and history (browser cache is one of the biggest things that adds to your memory). I dumped Pulse the other day in favor of Google Reader on the browser (not as "pretty", but much less space). I generally download 2 or 3 apps that do what I want, just to see what size they are if and after they move to SD, then I delete the largest ones.

I keep debating whether to root or not, but as long as my space remaining stays over 20mb I'm happy leaving things alone.

Worked fine for me.

Thats using a rooted phone though isn't it? I think Micheal323 is concerned about not rooting his phone.(give them a little time and they'll be begging for info on how to root)

I was just replying to koopakid08 who said you couldn't link2SD it. It isn't in the post I quoted, but he was quoting raynoldsk who was talking about Link2SD.

I too was hesitant to root my phone as well. But I got tired of making space for text messages. Then I rooted and used App2SD, this helped... a little. Finally I figured out how to used Link2SD and now have 164 moveable apps and 15 phone only apps with 89.25mb free space on my phone.

I am hesitant to use a rom, mostly because I'm probably getting a Triumph and passing my Optimus V along to my wife.

I think the first app anyone downloads should be AppBrain. Best way to find apps I know of, plus a handy way to manage apps (prevent further updates, move to SD, etc).

+1 ^

AppBrain along with their other app to go with it called Fast Web Installer (it recently had a nasty login bug, but it's been fixed) are two apps I can't live without!

Not that I'm aware of. Rooting and installing a custom ROM really is the best option. BumbleBee and AOSP both give you well over 150mb. AOSP also lets you move almost any app to the SD card. I have 60 apps in my app drawer, and I'm sitting pretty with 109mb of free internal memory.

If you absolutely refuse to root (understandable), then you are pretty much stuck deciding which apps you really need.

If you really don't want to root your phone(can't blame you if you don't want to as they are expensive) the only solution is to try to find a type of app that you want to do something, and then see if you can find the one that takes up the least amount of memory ,or even better, you can move to the sd card. I have 78 apps on a nonrooted phone and still have 79MB of memory left. Granted it takes a lot of time, and trial and error. But its either that or root your phone and use Link2SD, which as it happens MacFett did a great tutorial on(my memory is failing me as to the thread name though, but it is an excellent tutorial). Even then its back to trial and error as to what apps don't function properly on the sd card( like widgets or anything that needs constant system access). Some even disappear and you have to go back to the market and reinstall them.

Are you running a custom rom or are you rooted stock because on rooted stock it tells me it is a system app and won't let me link it. I'm guessing that with a custom rom since you have to flash the gapps after the rom, so it is no longer considered a system app.

Rooted stock.

Once you are rooted you can delete system apps like maps, gmail and all the bloatware. Then reinstall from the market and move it your sd card. You don't need a custom rom for this. Just install a file manager like Super Manager and set your system to r/w.

I’m not rooting so am stuck with not updating Maps just to stay afloat, memory-wise. But is there a way to keep it from updating all by itself? I ignore it when the update list appears, but somewhere down the line it just does it anyway, forcing me to uninstall the update.

Being that I use Maps about twice a year, I’m ticked that Google won’t allow me to move it.

Non-Maps memory question: I have an 8G SD card and have parked a zillion apps there, because I can. Do they leave morsels in the memory that also add to my memory problem?
