Custom (3rd Party) ROM: Villain. Pros and Cons

Hawker

Android Expert
I thought it may be extremely useful for people who are contemplating going over to a 3rd party ROM what the good and bad points are, comparisons to official ROM etc.

May also be useful to state which 3rd party kernel (if applicable) seems to work well with it.

Can you start off with which version of the ROM your using with which firmware it is based on, followed by your findings.

Other 3rd Party ROMS are commented on in the threads below (please start new threads for any other ROMS that you wish to comment on):
Revolution
Lite'ning
Cognition S2 (thanks to steslatt)
SicOpaT
MoDaCo (thanks to Sydney99)

Many thanks to all that contribute

Pros:
Decent Battery Life.
Stable.
Fast.
Lots of support on the XDA thread.

Cons:
Not based on the latest Firmware.
The Tweaks app you can use with the rom is not very good (no restore feature, not much info, no previews).

Pros:
Good Battery Life
Fast

Cons:
tweaks app is horrible. You have 2 install 2 part without rebooting, but after the 1st install you get constant (really, every 5 seconds) force closes and it interrupts the download making the second part almost impossible to install.

Browser is laggy. the solution is to use another browser, but I like the stock one, so it is important to me.

The older Villain 2.3 is much better especially with KH6 and latest nemphetamine kernel. No browser lag and great battery.

New v2.5 (based on KI4 firmware) has just been released. See XDA. :)

Hey, I'm interested in getting on this. I've downloaded the zip file but I haven't been able to locate any instructions.

Basically, my phone isn't rooted, but I am on 2.3.4. A link or general crash course would be more than enough to get me going. Just need to be kicked in the right direction :o

you need to be rooted.
this is KI4 based, so you need to root via the associated KI4 CF root file from here

then do a CWM/nandroid backup and titanium backup
put the zip onto the root of the internal SD.
Enter CWM, carry out a factory reset, and cache wipe, and flash the ROM via "Install zip from SD" option, and choose the downloaded Villain zip file.
Reboot the phone into VillainROM, bearing in mind the first boot may take some time on the boot animation

I gave 2.5 a go yesterday and to be honest it didn't feel as good as the others. All the browsers had lag and there's no themes available yet. Personally I would stick with 2.3 our 2.4.

Damn, now I don't know which version to install. I have both 2.5 and 2.4.2 ready to go!!

Just because I had a few problems it doesn't necessarily mean you will. If you wanted to give 2.5 a try, go for it. If you have problems you can flash 2.4.2 over the top without having to wipe anything. So nothing ventured, nothing gained.

True, I'll flash 2.4.2 to see what it's all about. Then I'll flash 2.5 just to get a feel of how it's done once already rooted. Cheers
