Incredible 2 Battery Saving tips thread

Yes, I am using the advanced profile & have been ever since installing jd plus. I also have the scheduling set to every hour, & my night mode scheduled for 12am to 7am, ever since installing also.
It is just the quick box that I am missing.

I just checked the change-logs for JD builds and it looks like the Quickbox was implemented after 3.5.6. I'm using the beta and it's very stable so I'd recommend giving it a try. I believe you can get 3.6.6 in the Market. It's a good idea to uninstall and reboot the phone before installing the new version. Hope that sorts it out for you!

Ok, thanks for the info, I just looked & saw jd beta version 3.6.6 on the market. In order to get that one and I probably would have to uninstall the free version I have and possibly the plus package, reboot, then download the 3.6.6 beta version then put plus back on top of it through the beta, since the plus is like an add on.
Sound right?

Yes, I've done it a number of times and I think that's the best way. Remove the widgets as well. Let me know how it goes. I'm using the 3.6.1 beta and haven't bothered updating since it's working well, but I'll be curious to hear about 3.6.6.

Background: I've been an owner of an OG Incredible since release day oh so many years ago. I've been around the block when it comes to maximizing battery life on these things. Last week, my girlfriend upgraded from a blackberry to an Inc 2. She has been getting awful battery life. I did some tweaking to it over the weekend and did the usual things:

* dropped the screen timeout to 30 seconds
* turned off or reduced the frequency of all of the 'Accounts & Sync' entries
* turned off the always on mobile networks
* made sure the phone was set to use CDMA network
* turned off all GPS and Bluetooth
I even went as far as to set the screen brightness down 2/3's and set it to autodim.

She just called from the airport (she's on a business trip) and said that her battery is already >50% gone. It was at a full charge this morning. She uses this phone for work and has been only emailing since she landed.

I asked her to tell me what's been using her battery and this is what she replied with:
Display 70%
Voice 16%
Dialer 4%
Cell Standby 3%
WiFi 2%

I know it's not all of the info that's really needed, but it's all I have at the moment. She doesn't have the time nor the patience for me to walk her through getting the rest of the info.

But where would you guys/gals start to look? I know how frustrating it can be to have a phone with sucky battery life (I'm an Inc user that's suffered for years). But from what I've read on here so far, I've hit the main things that are needed to keep an Inc 2 up and running for more than 4 hours.

Thanks!

Have you read the messages about Juice Defender? Have you tried it? The free version can make a difference and if it does you can upgrade to Pro which is even better. I also use Screebl, which keeps the screen On when I'm using it and turns it off very quickly when I'm not. I think that's better then a fixed timeout. If optimizing usage doesn't cut it you could consider an extended battery.

Edit: There are occasions where background processes will hog the CPU and eat up the battery while doing nothing useful. You could install a process viewer (such as Watchdog) to see if something like this is happening. I was also surprised to see that many apps I downloaded start automatically. I uninstalled many of them.

Also, poor signal strength could be a factor. When the phone is getting 0 to 1 bar for a long time this could be sucking down battery life, the radio will struggle to find a signal & use a lot of battery power doing so. When my signal is weak like this I throw the phone into airplane mode until I move into an area with a better signal.
Certainly try juice defender, this will help a lot by managing 3g, that if left on the whole time the phone is turned on and/or awake will use a significant amount of battery power than if it is only used when you need it, then disabled.
Sorry to say that if all that doesn't work you might be looking have to do a factory reset. Other users have reported battery life being much better after doing one, but don't pull the trigger on that just yet, wait and see if you can work it out without having to do one.
I guess it would be like a desperate last attempt to fix the problem.

I never thought I'd actually reach this! :D

Are you not rooted running the 2.3.4 ota update?

Yes, running stock 2.3.4 - there isn't a noticeable performance difference between this new beta and 3.6.1 I was using before, but they are experimenting with new features. For instance there's a new option to "force reconnect" wifi and another for disabling JS via SMS to make it easier to track a lost or stolen phone.

Got it to work on 2.3.4. I am running the 3.7.1 beta.
After a bit of troubleshooting, I had an invisible app locker protecting the internet app that was screwing it up. Then I was having issues with it reenabling 3g after unlocking the screen. I found if you disable the enable after unlock option and 3g does not reconnect, after you unlock the screen, you can just lock the screen then unlock it again, this forces a toggle cycle and it reconnects.
I have the quickbox too, which I like. Seems like upgrading to 2.3.4 and then doing a factory reset paid off for me, I am seeing better battery life than running jd on froyo, I have 1 day and 17 hours right now with 20% still left after normal use. I use plus on top of the beta too.
Great battery life!!! Satisfied here! ;)

Juice Defender development is moving along - latest beta is 3.7.5, which I plan to install later today. It's starting to look like JD Ultimate would be worth using on phones that are not rooted, specifically the new Bluetooth control features. I wish Ultimate was available from a US source though so I wouldn't be hit by an overseas service charge in additional to the rather steep $7/US.

Sure is moving along, right after I found the 3.7.1 private beta on a jd site I saw 3.7.2 on the market, now you are seeing 3.7.5, wow. Jd be rollin'! :)

3.7.7 now available. It fixes the problems I was having with the screen off/device lock feature. Brightness is working pretty well too.

Where can I snatch the 3.7.7 beta up at?
What do you use the screen off/device lock feature for, what does it do?
Edit: sorry, oops, duh, just found it on the market, will probably update today.

Yeah, they put 3.7.7 up in the Market. Regarding Screen Off/Device Lock it's an "Ultimate" option that enables you to adjust how quickly the screen turns off and when it locks. What makes this potentially useful is you can set a different lock time based on a wifi network. For instance when JD is connected to your home wifi you can set the lock interval to "never" and when you go out it will go back to the original setting. At least that's how it's supposed to work - it's not working on my Inc2 yet, but they will fix it.

Have you configured the app to let jd always let the specific app Pandora always have connectivity even when you lock the screen?

The triggers tab of settings appears after you select and confirm the advanced profile, anyway that's how my plus works.

After you select the advanced profile the 5 tabs at the top in order should be:
About> Status > Controls> Schedules> Triggers

Yeah, it is the same option as what is available under "customize" instead of "advanced" and I have tried them both now. It still plays out the first song, then quits. When I wake the screen Pandora says "waiting for connection" then my 3g comes back on and a-way it goes again playing like normal.
This is the only thing keeping me from using JD right now. Very frustrating.
I wrote a ticket over at JD's site, but no specific reply producing a fix. I have had the same issue in Virtuous and Newt's HD but come to think of it I haven't tried on an AOSP yet.
If you aren't having the same problems, what ROM are you running?
