Eris to v2.x, when?

Hello everyone, long time lurker first time poster. I finally decided to join to see if I could offer any insight and draw from the knowledge of everyone here. I don't know if joeyray15's question was closed, but I wanted to add a little info if he/she was interested.

The Eris has a Qualcomm MSM7600 CPU while the Sprint Hero has Qualcomm MSM7525 CPU. Both are clocked at 528MHz (unless the OS determines otherwise) and both have a ARM1136EJ-S core using ARMv6 instruction sets so processing power should be almost identical. Both are 65nm chips so power draw would be about the same depending on usage. The 7600 seems to have support for both GSM and CDMA radios depending on what the manufacturer decides to use. Basically they are exactly the same performance wise.

To not drift too far off topic, I would bet that Sense could be dropped onto 2.0 or 2.1 with little problem because I doubt Google removed API calls unless they were horribly ineffecient or replaced with a different API call that added additional functionality. I think that HTC is taking this opportunity to enhance and provide additional functionality to Sense that would be available with the new API libraries added in 2.0 and 2.1. Then again I could be off and HTC just wants to see us suffer while they sit sipping single malt 30 year old scotch and smoking fine cuban cigars... but I hope not!:D

Wow! Excellent first post!

Welcome to the forum.

I have been hoping that that is what HTC is up to as well. I can't imagine that moving Sense over to an updated OS would be that difficult, but then again I am not a software engineer either. From what I have seen of the features on the HD2 (WinMo, but still HTC and has a version of Sense on it) I have to believe that they are going to bring some big updates and new features to the table. I am really hoping for a rework on some apps and possibly even some totally new apps too.

Check this out - They talk a good game. Only 14 days, but I consider that pretty good for the bargain price.

I think Verizon is great... they try to be confident and because of that they sometimes look like tools when they try to talk about things they know nothing about. AND they are paid on commision so they try to upsell every chance they have which gets annoying. BUT.. on the support side I have loved them.. I never paid for a phone until I spent a couple years with Verizon then after the great network and super service I decided I would stay and started paying for my phones. I lost my MotoRazr once, I borrowed an old one from a buddy since I still had a few months on my contract.. it didnt work so I went in to the store and while looking for a new phone explained my situation to the agent.. He gave me a refurb moto razr and just asked me to look him up when I cam back for the new in 2. Great service. Regardless of where you actually buy your phone its a VZW phone and they will support you. Its just the return you have to consider when going with someone else.

Wow! Thank you for that! Additional (especially knowledgeable) is always welcome! that makes me happy to see.

Other thing I noticed is that wirefly requires you use the same EID for 6 months on your account or you get charged for the equipment. This must come from some agreement they have with Verizon for discounts and sales commisions. The requirements from their site are listed below:
Our goal is to provide you with the very best purchasing experience possible, including huge savings vs. buying in a retail store. Your wireless device purchase price was reduced by an Equipment Discount of $200 ($300 for PDA's and smart phones; $300 for Netbooks). By accepting this price reduction, you agree to repay this discount if, during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, you:

Fail to pay your balance due to Verizon Wireless each month
defaultlistbullet.gif
Disconnect this Verizon Wireless line of service
defaultlistbullet.gif
Transfer this equipment to another Verizon Wireless line of service
defaultlistbullet.gif
Change your Verizon Wireless service rate plan to a lower monthly service rate
defaultlistbullet.gif
Deactivate the email/data feature if one was required at the point of purchase
defaultlistbullet.gif
Transfer/port an existing mobile number from another Verizon Wireless account if this is a new line of service

Replace an existing account with Verizon Wireless with this account if this is a new line

Return your equipment for a refund or exchange and it is not in its original, new condition or it is not returned within the 30-day return period outlined in our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

Thank you for all of the warm welcomes. I have learned so much here and at XDA that I'm glad I can finally give back.

My biggest fear/concern with getting 2.x is that it will be "dumbed down" for the Eris hardware. The Qualcomm Scorpion architecture in the snapdragon and the cortex A8 in the OMAP3430 are far beyond the MSM7600 in the Eris. I'm sure most of the highly desired apps such as google navigation and voice to text will be included, but things such as the animated wallpapers will be excluded. The wallpaper would eat too many CPU cycles and cause the UI to become less responsive since it is trying to do too many things at once. I think HTC will sacrifice the wallpaper in exchange for a smoother user experience.

Again I hope I'm wrong because I can't think of a better way to rub android in all my friends' iphone loving faces:cool:

That's what I'm talking about: Obviously if you're returning it after a couple of weeks, OR, if it has some defect, it's not going to be in original, new condition... and, they say 30 days but it's really 14 days.

Plus, once you consider that 181 day stuff: If you make ONE late payment (easy to do, for me anyway)- then you lost the whole discount. All-in-all, seem too risky for me. I'll probably buy at the store.

thanks for your feedback and information!

Always a trade off for the cheaper price. Before you got VZW store, check their online sales and Best Buy, I noticed that they both have the Eris right now for $79, but when I went to the store to make sure my work discount was still on my plan they were asking $179

Good Luck

?? memo from VZW "Memo from Verizon saying the Android 2.1 update would happen on February 29th!" February 2010 only has 28 days....;=D

About losing your apps....All you have to do is back them up and reload them. The only way you would get screwed is if they were not written to run on a different Android version. But normally their is no need to worry about your apps, you think they haven't thought about that scenario?

A little birdie told me we are getting the 2.1 Eris update today!!!!!!
Then he flew into a window, snapped his neck, fell to the ground, twitched a little, and died. Not the most reliable source.

That was a suicide tweet. It is the latest thing in cyber terrorism. They send out false information all the time. I had one tell me that Ed McMahon was coming by with a check the other day.

By "check," the bird could have meant many things. Ed's dead, so it could be he's coming by to check on your damned status.

Yeah, because we have to be aware of those damn damned. They are very hard to insult. You can yell, "Damn you!" all you want, and they just sit and stare at you like, "Well, duhhhh! Or course I'm damned!"

And then there's the Hoover Dammed. They're even more interesting.

So I was in the versizon store tonight looking over the palm pre. There were 2 guys talking about 5 feet away from me. One of the guys is a sales rep for verizon, the other guy I dunno.

I overheard a few tidbits but not enough to understand what was being said exactly. When the other gentleman walked away I asked the rep what was happening. I know him because I bought my Eris there.

He asked me how I was liking the Eris, I said just fine. I asked him about the new moto coming, he didn't know. I casually said I can't wait until 2.xx comes to the Eris. He said that according to internal documents and from his conversation with the other guy (I learned later he was an area rep for verizon) that 2.xx was pushed out a few weeks. The original date was the end of January. He said that we should expect to 2.xx in the upcoming week to 10 days. That's all I got from him.

And OTD, quit starring at me. I know you like my hat.
