Root rooted froyo to rooted gingerbread

I rooted my evo 4g when I bought it to access wireless tether and because I really need my phone 24 - 7 I haven't touched it since. Well I've decided to upgrade to gingerbread and I would like to use the MikG v.2.56 rom.

I used Autoroot originally and can't find anything on what I need to do to upgrade. I've read the guides but I can only find info on revoked.

I'm a newbie at this so be gentle. What would be the best (easiest) way to go about it.

Thanks

Jay

Ok. go to htcevohacks.com Click on the tab on the top how to unroot htc evo. Do this step by step. Then update the phone. Go to settings then system updates and look for htc software update. do this and let it do its thing. the go to the sticky rooting for gingerbread. this will explain how to root gingerbread step by step.

BTW. doing the unroot will put u back to froyo. The system update puts you to gingerbread

Good Luck.

i do not recommend that unfortunately. it is one way to do it. but it is much easier to just flash a gingerbread rom.

NEVER ACCEPT AN OTA WHEN YOU ARE ROOTED. even though we have the ability to root gingerbread now. accpeting it can do a few things when you are rooted. 1. it could brick your phone. 2. it could unroot you. in most cases it will also close the previous exploit. and when that happens you will then have to wait to root your phone again as the devs need some time to find a new exploit. fortunately for us we have the exploit with revolutionary.

htc has been talking about pushing an ota to fix some security issues that have come out recently. if they do, once again DO NOT ACCEPT IT. i guarantee you that the devs will bake the ota into a rom or one of their existing roms.

so i would look into the roms/kernel sticky and try mikg2.56. it is super fast and stable. much better then stock.

You don't have to unroot, it's real simple. First off download the mikg2.56 zip from the roms and kernels download page. While your there, also download vr superwipe. Next, go into recovery and wipe everything except sd card and battery stats. Now flash the superwipe zip. It wipes everything 3x. Now all you have to do is flash mikg2.56 and reboot.

Forgot to mention. Make sure you make a NAND backup and back up all your apps through titanium backup.

Yep, no point in unrooting just to reroot it.

As others have stated you are able to just flash a gingerbread ROM to update

Do I back up all apps or just the ones I've installed?

if you do a batch backup or restore then "backup all user apps" and restore "all apps with data". just make sure to not restore any system data. also some system apps (in red) may not like your new rom so scroll through the list and make sure which ones you want to backup and restore.
