Root Rooting & Cyanogen

First link in the post is this: [TOOL] Advanced Ace Hack Kit (UPDATED 08-10-2011) - xda-developers

It's pretty much one click is it not? Sorry, I've not used the tool, but from others experience, it is pretty much a 1 click thing (as far as I'm aware). Your handset will be as is, but rooted, S-OFF and with clockwork mod installed on it. If you want to install a custom ROM, you'll need to download the ROMs zip file onto the SD Card, reboot into clockwork and flash from there. Alternatively, ROM Manager could handle all of that for you.

You'd need Titanium to backup your apps and app data (as flashing the ROM will wipe them) so you'd obviously have to install and run titanium before you flashed.

Christ on a bike! Why is it all so complex? Gold card this blah blah that! Do I need another sd card do I? Is their a video of someone doing this on you tube so the less tech savvy can make head or tail of it? just want my bloody wifi to stay connected like it used to before this ginger crap update ****ed me up!

It just looks as though you need to download the zip, extract it to a directory you can easily navigate to via the command line, then run the hack ace.cmd file, then select option 1 in the command prompt window.

If it's not for you, then fair enough. From your previous posts, it appears that Orange fobbed you off with some excuse that the DHD isn't capable of running Gingerbread, have you called HTC to see what they say? They might be able to suggest a fix or take it in for repair.

re the battery issues you mentioned above, as john_g suggested, that's not normal and if you look through this section, there are plenty of threads detailing what to do to ascertain what's causing the battery drain (most likely an errant app running in the background).

Sorry for taking the thread off topic btw :p

Right following your advice El Presidente i've used the above to root my phone. now what do i do with it? :D

I'd install Titanium and take a backup of all your apps and data as when you flash a ROM, they're wiped.

You're free to pick your ROM now, what do you want to go for? Something similar to the HTC software you have on there at the moment, or something radically different?

I've backed up everything as far as i can tell (how do you know if you've backed everything up??)

I'd probably go for something completely new and different what do you recommend and how do i get it? are they on the market? will i still have my market icons after i flash it?

To check stuff is backed up, open Titanium, hit menu, batch, then head down to the restore section, look for "Restore all apps with Data", hit run. If you see a list of all the installed apps on your phone, you're sorted and TB has a backup for them. Just click back to exit, don't try to restore stuff yet.

If you want to simplify things, you can download ROM Manager from the market which takes a lot of hassle out of downloading and installing ROMs for you. I prefer to do things manually though.

If you're looking for something a little different, I'd recommend CM7 or MIUI. If you can hang fire for a bit, I'll post links for you when it dies down at work. :)

In the meantime, have a look at what's available to you here: Desire HD Index - Everything Desire HD is Here! [Updated July 25th!!] - xda-developers

Cool thanks for that, if flashing wipes the phone doesn't it wipe titanium and Rom manager apps too then?? haven't got my head around this yet! :)

I've also back up the current stock htc rom with the Rom Manager application also! was i correct in doing this??

It does wipe, but the apps are downloaded again when you relink your handset to the same google account. So ROM Manager & Titanium will redownload themselves eventually. Alternatively, if you pay for the full version of TB, you can create a zip file to clash in Clockwork which will install Titanium again before you've linked the handset back to the google account. You can then restore your apps (via the backups you have on the SD Card) and associated data. Then, there's an option in TB to link them to the market again so you can get updates for them etc. The full version will also allow you to restore everything at once, where as the free version you'll have to do it individually.

The backup you took with ROM Manager is your entire phone so that if something goes wrong with your chosen ROM, you can restore your ROM to the state it was before you flashed anything. As a rule, I take a backup every time I flash something in clockwork, just in case. You were definitely correct in doing so!

Tried to install cyanogen Rom, but it wouldn't load properly, i was left with the home start up screen and the the cyanogen arrow scrolling around in circles!

Rom manager, went to download a rom and then CyanogenMod then update cm 7.0.3 desire hd zip, actually i think i got it through the cyanogen web page as the rom manager kept saying that i needed the latest version even though i have the latest version.

Strangely enough the rom manager is not letting me download roms! anyway i clearly didn't do it right, What it the process?

I'm now currently downloading cyanogenMod 7.1.0 RC1, rom manager seems to be functioning now and it currently 10% loaded as we speak!

In ROM Manager, at the top, it should tell you what version of ClockworkMod you have installed, is it 5.0.2.0?

If you can hang on till tomorrow, as per here, I'm going to write some instructions if you want to do the entire thing manually? It's not complicated by any means, but it'll just take me a little while to write. There's no harm in doing it in ROM Manager, but it's good to know how to do it manually should any issues arise.

You need to wipe cache and factory reset (I think you get the option too before it reboots to clockwork). Did you download the google apps package too?

You're right it's getting late and we'll be more alert tomorrow. I didn't download the google apps package there was a tick option but i didn't tick it, should I have done? and can i get it separately?

Thanks for your help and i look forward to you idiots guide tomoz,
cheers again :D

cya!

Yeah, you can get it separately, it just makes it easier to do it all at once.

Check the thread I linked to tomorrow, I'll fire instructions in there (I'll also move the root related posts here to their own thread in the root section).

Thanks mate you're earning your crust today aint ya? :D really thanks a lot for your help. Another daft question, what happens to all my stored address book contacts, will flashing mean i have to type them all in again? tel numbers, emails, addresses etc!

Cheers!

Yes the clockwork mod says current recovery/latest recovery: clockwork mod 5.0.2.0

You won't lose any of your contacts. They are either backed up by on your SD card already or by Titanium Backup (perhaps both?) and when I flashed CM7 last week I had all my contacts. I did however lose all my sms messages as I couldn't find out where TB saved them on my SD card :o

Don't know if Titanium Backup does back your text messages up, but there are apps on the market for backing texts up. I'm not sure if your contacts are backed by Titanium up either... I know that they are backed up by your gmail account... worth syncing your contacts to your gmail, incase you loose/change phones - as soon as you associate a phone with a gmail account, the contacts should appear again! :)

Woops, yes you are correct, I now remember posting in this forum a while ago asking how to backup my contacts and they were already on my gmail account :o I was looking through TB earlier and I saw the 'Contacts' app thinking it was my actual contacts
